Objective To investigate the effect of Buyanghuanwu decoction(BYHWD) on angiogenesis and Ang-1/Tie-2 expression after focal cerebral ischemia in mice. Methods Focal cerebral ischemia was induced by 30 min of middle cerebral artery occlusion followed by reperfusion. BYHWD (20 g/kg) was administered orally 24 h after ischemia and once a day. The neurological score and the corner test were used to evaluate sensorimotor function during 28 days after ischemia. The microvessels density and the expression of Ang-1/Tie-2 in the ischemic boundary zone were determined by immunohistochemistry on 28 days after ischemia. Results Compared with the model group, BYHWD significantly ameliorated neurological dysfunction and reduced the number of right turn during 3 to 28 days after ischemia(P<0.05 ). In addition, the numbers of CD31 ,Ang-1 and Tie-2 immunopositive cells were (437 ±59) ,(389 ±61 ) and (251 ±42) at the boundary zone in model group 28 days after ischemia, respectively. However, BYHWD treatment significantly increased the numbers of CD31(609 ± 68 ), Ang-1 (551 ±66) and Tie-2 (342 ±46) immunopositive cells(P<0. 01 ). Conclusion BYHWD promotes angiogenesis, which may contribute to recovery of neurological function after focal cerebral ischemia, and Ang-1/Tie-2 pathway appears to mediate BYHWD-induced angiogenesis.

Liver ferritin of Sphyrna zygaena(SZLF) with purity of mass spectrum was prepared in batch. Under) the condition of acidifying medium at pH 1.0, PAGE showed that SZLF subunits treated for 20 min began) to dissociate. A whole process of subunit dissociation and recombination was monitored by transmission electron microscopy(TEM). In addition, the changes of size of both protein shell and iron core were also determined) by TEM directly. It was found that in the acid dissociation process of SZLF subunits, the size of iron) core and protein shell showed the same trend of change, which might be related to not only the iron release) of inner iron core but the dissociation and unfolding of the protein shell. The passway of SZLF recombination is a fast step, which is a conversion process from incompact moltenglobule to compact ferritin. Under the assistant of matrix acidity pH 3.0 and laser, SZLF mixed with horse spleen ferritin(HSF) still has capacity to release) its subunits to form subunit ions for mass analysis by a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer, which indicates that the interaction intensity between the subunits was weaken but they were not unfolded under this pH condition. TEM technology can be applied in studying both dissociation and recombination in ferritin subunits.

Purpose Brain complications severely threaten the treatment and survival of children with leukemia. This paper aims to investigate the MRI manifestations and differences of brain complications in leukemia before and after chemotherapy for a clinical guidance.Materials and Methods The clinical data and MRI findings of 37 children with leukemia and brain complications were retrospectively analyzed. Thirty-four of them underwent MRI scan twice or more, among whom 28 received contrast-enhanced MRI scan. Results Twenty-two patients were discovered with brain complications before chemotherapy, 2 of whom were with two kinds of complications. Meningopathy was found in 7 patients who showed widespread or localized meningeal thickening. Among them, 5 patients'' lesions reduced or disappeared after chemotherapy. Intracerebral multiple small and micro bleed was found in these 7 patients, 2 of them combined with hematoma. Three patients were found with intracranial tumor which all proved to be temporal bone tumor, 1 of whom combined with temporal lobe tumor and 1 had tumor disappeared after chemotherapy. The other complications before chemotherapy included leukoencephalopathy (n=2), subdural collection of fluid (n=2), meninges and parenchymal infiltration of leukemia (n=1), fungal infection (n=1) and cerebral infarction (n=1). On the contrary, 17 patients were discovered with brain complications after chemotherapy, 8 of whom were with two or more complications. Two patients had different kinds of complications before and after chemotherapy. Brain atrophy was observed in 13 patients. Leukoenphalopathy was found in 9 patients who presented high signal in white matter of double periventricular and/or semi-oval center on T2WI; the lesions of 4 patients were reduced or disappeared after withdrawal. Infectious diseases were diagnosed in 3 patients, including viral encephalitis in 2 cases, tuberculous meningitis combined with tuberculoma in 1 case. The other complications included intracranial tumor (n=2), sinus thrombosis (n=1), posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (n=1) after chemotherapy. Conclusion The MRI findings of brain complications in childhood leukemia are various and demonstrate significantly different features before and after chemotherapy. The major complications before treatment include meningopathy and intra-cerebral hemorrhage;while after chemotherapy the main complications are brain atrophy, leukoencephalopathy and infectious diseases. MRI proves to be a valuable method to detect, observe and follow up these complications.

Objective:To investigate the prognosis of cT3 and the subgroups of low rectal cancer patients who underwent neoadju-vant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) and evaluate whether all patients with cT3 low rectal cancer should undergo CRT. Methods:A total of 223 patients with cT3 low rectal cancer treated in the Department of Colorectal Surgery of Fujian Medical University Union Hospital from January 2008 to December 2012 were divided into neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy group (CRT group) (115 cases) and no neoad-juvant chemoradiotherapy group (nCRT group) (108 cases) according to whether the patients underwent CRT. Afterward, the patients were retrospectively divided into three subgroups (mrT3a, mrT3b, and mrT3c) according to the proposed criteria of the Radiologic Soci-ety of North America (RSNA) by measuring the depth of mesorectal invasion (DMI) (DMI<5, DMI=5-10, and DMI>10 mm). The prog-noses of the two groups and their subgroups were compared. Results:The CRT and nCRT groups revealed no significant differences in the 3-year disease-free survival rate and the local recurrence rate for all the mrT3 patients (78.2%vs. 71.9%, P=0.608;4.4%vs. 8.5%, P=0.120) and mrT3a patients (82.4%vs. 81.8%, P=0.837;5.8%vs. 5.9%, P=0.658). On the contrary, for the mrT3b patients, the CRT and nCRT groups revealed significant differences in the 3-year disease-free survival rate (84.4%vs. 42.4%, P=0.032) and local recurrence rate (0.0%vs. 18.2%, P=0.014). For the mrT3b,c patients, the CRT and nCRT groups revealed no significant difference in the 3-year dis-ease-free survival rate (72.8%vs. 42.4%, P=0.060) but revealed a significant difference in the local recurrence rate (2.4%vs. 18.2%, P=0.021). COX regression analysis was utilized for 3-year disease-free survival, DMI and circumferential resection margin (CRM) were significant in the univariate analysis. Additionally, the multivariate analysis indicated that CRM is an independent impact factor (OR=2.249, CI 1.067-4.742, P=0.033). Conclusion:CRT can improve the prognosis of patients with mrT3b,c low rectal cancer but may not significantly influence the prognosis of patients with mrT3a and CRM-negative low rectal cancer;surgical treatment can be performed in these patients without CRT.

Objective To explore the differences in the strength of the nodes in the brain white matter weighted networks between the male patients with paranoid schizophrenia and male healthy controls, and to analysis the integrity of the white matter fiber tracts that connected to the different brain regions and its relationship with the course of disease. Methods Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data were obtained from 25 male patients with paranoid schizophrenia and 26 male healthy controls. The whole brain was parcellated into 90 regions by using the anatomical label map. Tractography was performed in the whole brain of each subject to reconstruct white matter tracts using the FACT algorithm. The brain white matter weighted networks were then constructed using the complex network theory. Results The strength of the nodes in the networks of schizophrenia significantly decreased in the right thalamus (P=0.03, corrected) and the right hes?chl gyrus (P=0.04, corrected). Negative correlation was found between the strength of the right thalamus and the course of disease (r=-0.45, P=0.03). Conclusion The integrity of the white matter fiber tracts connected to the thalamus and tem?poral lobes in the male paranoid schizophrenia is impaired. The lesion of fiber tracts connected to the thalamus is related with the course of disease.

Objective To explore the value of CT venography in the surgical treatment of falcotentorial junction meningiomas. Methods CT venography was carried out in 25 patients with falcotentorial junction meningiomas. 2-D and 3-D images were reformatted at the workstation. The classification and relationship between the tumors and veins were determined, and the degree of venous stenosis and collateral were assessed. The safe surgical pathway was chosen to avoid the injury of main draining vein. Results Falcotentorial junction meningiomas were divided into 5 types according to the relationship between the tumors and veins and the direction of the tumors. There were 5 cases of forward type, 4 cases of backward type, 3 cases of inferior type, 6 cases of superior type and 7 cases of lateral type in this group. The relationship between tumors and veins was accordant with the findings in surgery. Of all 25 cases, 19 underwent total removal, 6 underwent subtotal removal and all of the main driving veins were reserved. There were 3 cases of quadrantanopsia or hemianopsia after the operation, and all of them recovered after 3 months of follow-up. Conclusion CTV technique can classify the falcotentorial junction meningioma and is helpful for choosing the appropriate surgical approaches.

OBJECTIVETo observe neuronal activities related to right-sided mastication in cortex and to explore the effect of mastication on brain function.
METHODSNeuronal activities related to right-sided mastication were detected with functional magnetic resonance imaging in 10 healthy volunteers. Image data was analyzed by SPM99 software with the use of t test.
RESULTSLocalization of activation in brain was different among subjects. Brain activation during mastication included left basal ganglion, Broca's area, angular gyrus and right supramarginal gyrus.
CONCLUSIONSThe functional areas related to right-sided mastication and speech were closely connected, which indicated close relationship between mastication and speech. The central control of mastication might share part of common neural mechanism with that of speech. The roles of activated brain regions in mastication still remained to be elucidated.
