Objective To investigate the expression of survivin in keloid, and its significance in the development of keloid. Methods Tissue samples were obtained from 25 patients with keloid (12 males and 13 females, aging from 4 to 44 years with a disease course of 1-18 years), and 15 normal skin samples obtained from surgical operation served as the controls. Streptavidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (SABC) method was applied to detect the expression of survivin in these samples. Results No expressin of survivin was observed in normal controls, while it was expressed in 80.0% (20/25) of the keloid samples with the predominant distribution in fibroblasts and vascular endothelial cells. The positivity rates of survivin were 57.14% (4/7), 81.81% (9/11) and 100% (7/7) in tissues of low-grade, moderate-grade and high-grade keloid, respectively, with no significant difference among the three groups (P = 0.133 ). Similarly, no signifi- cant difference was observed in the positivity rate of survivin between recurrent patients and untreated patients (90.91% (10/11 ) vs 71.43% (10/14), P = 0.341 ). Conclusion Survivin might play a role in the development of keloid.

Objective To explore the risk factors and causes affecting the operative mortality in esophagectomy patients with esophageal can cer. Methods 1400 cases with a curative esophagectomy for neopl asm of esophagus hospitalized from Mar,1973 to June, 2000 were reviewed. There w ere 31 died within 30 d or during hospitalization after esophagectomy as a group , and 1 369 survival cases, after operation, as another group. Sixteen factors t hat may influence the operational mortality were selected. A multi-variate anal ysis of these individual variables was performed by the computer′s logistic reg ression model. Results The operative mortality was 2.2%(31/1400 ). The causes of death included respiratory complication 17 cases (including res piratory failure caused by pneumonia or atelectasis), 15 cases, and adult respir atory distress syndrome (ARDS) 2 cases, the mortality was 54.8% in the death gro up), anastomotic leak 11 cases (34.5%), Chylothorax 2 cases (6.5%) and postopera tive digestive tract hemorrhage 1 case (3.2%). The results showed that the major risk factors that affected operative mortality in cases with esophageal cancer were history of long-herm heavy smoking, duration of operation and the year of operational (P<0.05). Conclusion To minimize operative mort ality of esophagectomy, some means must be noticed, including the reinforcemen t of the perioperative care, the improvement of anastomotic methods and surgical skill, reduing operative time as p ossible, disposing pulmonary complications in time and using respirator if neces sary.

Appropriate selection and measurement of lead biomarkers of exposure are critically important for health care management purposes, public health decision making, and primary prevention synthesis. Lead is one of the neurotoxicants that seems to be involved in the etiology of psychologies. Biomarkers are generally classified into three groups: biomarkers of exposure, effect, and susceptibility. The main body compartments that store lead are the blood, soft tissues, and bone; the half-life of lead in these tissues is measured in weeks for blood, months for soft tissues, and years for bone. Within the brain, lead-induced damage in the prefrontal cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum can lead to a variety of neurological disorders, such as brain damage, mental retardation, behavioral problems, nerve damage, and possibly Alzheimer's disease, Parkinsons disease, and schizophrenia. This paper presents an overview of biomarkers of lead exposure and discusses the neurotoxic effects of lead with regard to children and adults.

BACKGROUND: External preparations treatment of fractures in traditional Chinese medidne are mostly ordinary hard-paste, cream, ointment, which lack of modernized traditional Chinese medicine transdermal delivery systems, and the treatment has poor drug absorption and simple process. The treating procedure needs to be used repeatedly, which would affect fracture external fixation and lead to unsatisfactory therapeutic effect. In this Paler, the extemal treatment of traditional Chinese medidna was combined with advanced micro-nano-technology to develop a new medical complex functional materials-micron traditional Chinese medicine functional lining material, which is an organic combination of diaplasis, fixation and local drug remedy, which provides a better treatment for fractures. OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of micron tradifional Chinese medicine functional lining material on the healing of fracture in rabbits, METHODS: After model preparation, rabbits were randomly divided into 4 groups: rabbits in the micron group were treated with micron traditional Chinese medicine functional lining material plus plaster external fixation; those in the traditional Chinese medidna control group were treated with ordinary Chinese medicine functional material plus plaster extemal fixation; those in the lining material control group were treated with ordinary lining material added plaster extemal fixation; those in the natural healing control group had no special treatments. The effect of fracture healing was evaluated by X-ray at 2, 4 and 6 weeks after modeling. The serum concentration of alkaline phosphatase, calcium and phosphorus was detected respectivaly before modeling and at 2, 4 and 6 weeks after modeling. RESULTS AND CONCLISION: ①X-rap examination:After 6 weeks the external was almost copletly absorbed and medullary cavity was completely recanalizad in the micron group, while fracture line disappeared and the external callus began to be absorbed and medullary cavity was not recanalized in the traditional Chinese medidne control group. Additionally, there were case of non-union stump hardening in natural healing group. ②Serum biochemistry:The activity of alkaline phosphatase reached a peak after 2 weeks in micron group, which was 2 weeks ahead of time compared with that in traditional Chinese medicine control group. And the peak concentration of alkaline phosphatase in micron group was higher than other groups. After 4 weeks serum calcium concentration started to fall significantly and phosphorus concentration started to rise significantly in micron group, as was statistically significant compared with other groups. After 6 weeks serum calcium concentration in micron group had fallen to normal level, while that in other groups was higher than normal. And phosphorus concentration in micron group increased significantly, which was statistically significant compared with natural healing group. The results demonstrated that micron feature traditional Chinese medicine lining matedat can enhance the activity of alkaline phosphatase, decrease the serum concentration of calcium and increase the serum concentration of phosphorus and the product of calcium and phosphorus, therefore, promote the healing of fracture, It shows that micron traditional Chinese medicine functional lining matedal plays a stronger effect on promoting the healing of fracture than that of ordinary Chinese medicine functional lining material.

BACKGROUNDSkin lesions are common manifestations in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It is still unknown what the definite pathogenesis of skin involvement was and whether DNA participated in it. Our study was designed to explore the pathogenetic role and nature of nuclear antigen (DNA) deposited in the skin lesions of patients with SLE.
METHODSThirty skin samples from patients with SLE and 2 normal skin samples were studied. Extracellular DNA was evaluated by indirect immunofluorescence methods. The deposited immune complexes were extracted by cryoprecipitation, and DNA was then isolated with phenol and chloroform. DNA fragment sizes were detected by agarose gel electrophoresis. Finally, 8 different probes were used to analyze the origin of these DNA molecules using Dot hybridization.
RESULTSExtracellular DNA staining was found only in skin lesions, mainly those located in the basement membrane zone, vascular wall, and hair follicle wall. Normal skin and non-lesion SLE skin showed no fluorescence at locations outside the nuclei. There were no differences in the rate and intensity of extracellular DNA staining when comparing active phase to remission phase patients. No relationship was found between extracellular DNA and circulating anti-dsDNA antibodies. Deposited DNA fragments clustered into four bands of somewhat discrete sizes: 20 000 bp, 1300 bp, 800-900 bp, 100-200 bp. Small sized fragments (100-200 bp) were positively correlated with disease activity (P < 0.05, r = 0.407). Dot hybridization showed significant homology of the various extracellular DNA fragments examined with human genomic DNA, but not with DNA from the microorganisms and viruses we examined. There were also homologies between DNA samples from different individuals.
CONCLUSIONSDNA and its immune complexes may contribute to the pathogenesis of skin lesions in SLE. These DNA molecules range in size from 100 bp to 20 kb and may be endogenous in origin.
