BACKGROUND: Researchers in China and abroad have done a lot of experiments to study the bond strength of dentine adhesives from generation one to six,which have received satisfied results. However,there are still no reports about the bond strength of the seventh generation adhesive (Adper EasyTM one). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the bond strength of the Adper EasyTM one to normal dentine and caries-affected dentine,and to compare the results with total-etching adhesives. METHODS: A total of 12 healthy posterior teeth were randomly divided into group A and B; 12 posterior teeth with chronic occlusal caries were divided into group C and D. Adper EasyTM one was applied for group A and C,while Single bond 2 for group B and D. The modes of group A,B,C,D were subjected to microtensile bond strength test. Interfacial morphologies were analyzed by Stereo-Microscopy. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The microtensile bond strength of group A and B was (21.84±3.98),(27.10±4.85) MPa,which was (16.44±3.46) and (21.48±4.85) MPa in the group C and D. The differences between group A and B,group C and D,group A and C,as well as group B and D were statistical significant (P < 0.05). Failures mostly occur along the resin-dentine interface. The total-etching adhesives performed more effectively to both normal dentine and caries-affected dentine than Adper EasyTM one. For the same adhesive,the healthy dentine yielded higher bond strength than the caries-affected dentine.

Seven terpenoids and three sterols were isolated from the methanol extracts of the aerial parts of Ricinus communis by chromatography methods and their structures were identified by spectra analysis as ficusic acid( 1), phytol(2), callyspinol(3) , lupeol(4), 30-norlupan-3beta-ol-20-one(5) , lup-20(29)-en-3beta,15alpha-diol(6) , acetylaleuritolic acid( 7), stigmast4-en-3-one(8) , stig-mast-4-en-6beta-ol-3-one(9) , and stigmast4-en-3,6-dione(10). Compounds 1-3 and 5-10 were obtained from this species for the first time and 5 and 6 showed significant inhibitive activity and good selectivity against 11beta-HSD of mouse and human in vitro. BACKGROUND:More recently, the focus has been on searching for a compound Chinese medicine for reinforcing kidney, which cannot only inhibit bone absorption, but also promote osteogenesis to protect against osteoporosis. OBJECTIVE:To explore effects of drug serum of Jianbuhuqian pil s on proliferation and function of osteoblast-like cel s in vitro. METHODS:Twenty-four adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into low-dose, medium-dose, high-dose and normal saline groups, and given intragastric administration of 1.5, 3.0, and 6 g/kg Jianbuhuqian pills and equal volume of normal saline, respectively twice daily for 1 week. At 1 hour after final gavage, rats were decapitated to prepare drug sera used for culturing osteoblast-like cells. At 24, 48 and 72 hours of culture, the cellular morphology was observed, as well as the cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase activity was detected by MTT assay and alkaline phosphatase staining, respectively. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Compared with the normal saline group, the cel density began to increase significantly in three Jianbuhuqian groups at 24 hours after culture, mitotic figures were easy to be observed, cel s were in overlapping growth, much secretions and matrix accumulation appeared, especial y in the high-dose group. The obsorbance values in Jianbuhuqian groups were significantly higher than that in the normal saline group. After 24 hours of culture, the obsorbance values in the medium-dose and high-dose groups were significantly increased compared with the low-dose group, and the values showed significant differences among three Jianbuhuqian groups after 48 and 72-hour culture. In addition, the alkaline phosphatase activity presented overt increase in the Jianbuhuqian groups compared with the normal saline group, and significant differences could be found among Jianbuhuqian groups. To conclude, the drug serum of Jianbuhuqian pil s can promote the activity of osteoblast-like cel s in a time-and concentration-dependent manner.

The objective of this research work is to prepare a new and reliable radiopharmaceutical for osteoarthral cartilage imaging. Chondroitin sulfate (CS) was labeled directly with 99mTc by "pretinning" method, the labeling efficiency was 79.30% +/- 1.72% and radiochemical purity was 90.12% +/- 1l.23% after filtration by use of asepsis filter membrane. The biodistribution of 99Tc-CS was studied at 10, 30 min and 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 h respectively after caudal vein injection in normal mice,which showed that the radiolabeled product was washed out from blood quickly, and it was mainly excreted through kidney, but 99mTc-CS had distinctive characteristic of philo- cartilage. Scintigraphy of 99mTc-CS was performed on the rabbit with ostarthritis at 5 h after intravenous injection; the scintigram was clear,and the focus showed increased radiopharmaceutical uptake. The radioactivity ratio of the injured/uninjured side (T/NT) calculated over the region of interest (ROI) was 3.0 +/- 0.6 (P < 0.05). These results indicate that 99mTc-CS is an easily prepared compound with the characteristic of high philo-cartilage and it may be a new ideal cartilage imaging agent.

OBJECTIVETo explore the effects of early external fixation for open tibia and fibula fractures on the treatment and prognosis of severe multiple injuries.

METHODSSeventy-three patients were reviewed in the study. According to the surgical methods for tibia and fibula fractures, the patients with severe multiple injuries were divided into 2 groups: 42 patients in the treatment group, including 31 males and 11 females, with an average age of 40.2 years; 31 patients in the control group, ineluding 22 males and 9 females, with an average age of 42.6 years. The patients in treatment group were treated urgently with debridement, diaplasis and fixation with external fixator, and patients in control group were treated urgently with debridement, calcaneal traction or gypsum external fixation. The incidence rate and mortality of ARDS and MODS, wound infection rate, wound healing time, and fracture healing time between the 2 groups was compared.

RESULTSThe incidence rate and mortality of complications (ARDS) had significant differences between the 2 groups, those in the treatment group were lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). There were significant decreases in the infection rate and wound healing time in the treatment group.

CONCLUSIONExternal fixation for severe multiple injuries with open tibia and fibula fracture has been proved to be good, which can significantly reduce the mortality and incidence rate of complications and wound infection rate, promote wound healing.

Bone metastases are a major problem in the clinical management of patients with prostate cancer. Despite the use of analgesic for the relief of such pain, the outcomes are not often satisfactory. Strontium-89 (89Sr) is a pure beta-emitting radioisotope to be avidly concentrated in the areas of high osteoblastic activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of 89Sr in the therapy for bone metastases of prostate carcinoma. 116 patients received intravenous injection of 89Sr at the dose of 3mCi (111MBq). All patients underwent physical examination and Karnofsky's Performance Score (KPS) evaluation before and after administration; the analgesic effects were evaluated by scores of pain. The complete response (CR) was defined as scores of pain > 75%; no response (NR) was defined as scores of pain < 25% the remaining was partial response (PR). The changes of bone metastases were screened by CT, MRI and 99mTc-MDP bone scintigraphy according to the standards of WHO. After the treatment with 89Sr, the total response rate was 80.2%. In the 116 cases, 21 cases (18.1%) displayed complete response and 72 cases (62.1%) displayed partial response, but 23 cases (19.2%) showed no response. The mean score on Karnfsky's performance status (KPS) was 20.0% higher. About 1/3 cases exhibited an obvious decrease in the number of metastases, and some foci disappeared. Thirteen cases (12%) showed a greater decrease in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) value. 89Sr chloride is an effective and safe therapy of the bone metastases from prostate cancer.

This study aimed to explore the usefulness of 99mTechnetium methylenediphosphonate (99mTc-MDP) bone imaging in diagnosticating rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In 66 patients with RA, 99mTc-MDP whole body bone imaging, feet and hands regional bone imaging and ROI were performed. And from each patient, X-ray film, rheumatoid factor (RF), C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were taken for examination. By the use of 99mTc-MDP, abnormal bone images were observed in 55 cases of RA; the total positive rate of incidence (83.3%) was significantly higher than those by use of X-ray (45.5%), RF (51.5%), CRP (63.6%) and ESR (69.7%); the positive rates of imaging with 99mTc-MDP in the 55 cases of RA (divided into 4 groups according to the course of disease; namely, < 1,1-, 5- and >10-year groups) were 75.0%, 88.9%, 92.3% and 100.0% respectively, whereas the positive rates of those year-groups by use of X-ray were 10.7%, 33.3%, 84.6%, 100.0% respectively; comparison of the two methods, showed statistically significant difference: P<0.01 (< 5-year group); P >0.05 (> 5-year group). In 177 joint lesions detected by bone images, 144 lesions (81.4%) were symmetric, and 33 lesions (18.6%) were single. The most frequently detected lesions were at metacarpophalangeal joints or interphalangeal and wrist joints, metatarsophalangeal or ankle joints, and knee joints. We have noticed that 99mTc-MDP bone imaging can elevate the detectability at the early stage of RA, so it is of value for the treatment of RA.

Objective To investigate the current situation of health promoting behaviours among the maintenance hemodialysis patients(MHD) and explore the related factors of health promoting behaviours among the MHD patients. Methods A total of 120 MHD patients were investigated with a set of questionnaires, including demographic data, Health-promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP), Self Rated Abilities for health Practices Scales (SRAS), Short Form 36 Health survey Questionnaire (SF-36) and Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS). Results The mean score of overall health-promoting lifestyles was 63.18, which was significantly positively correlated with demographic characteristics, education and economic status. The health promotion behaviors was positively correlated with self-efficacy of health behaviours, perceived health status and social support. Conclusions The health-promoting behaviours among the MHD patients is at medium level. Better health promoting are found among the MHD patients with higher education and better economic status. Better health promoting behaviours are found among the MHD patients with high self-efficacy of health behaviours,better perceived health status and more social support.
