1.Effects of diterpene ginkgolides meglumine injection on neurotransmitters in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury rats

Aim To investigate the effects of diterpene ginkgolides meglumine injection (DGMI ) on amino acids and monoamine neurotransmitters in rats with cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury.Methods In-traluminal suture was applied to establish middle cere-bral artery occlusion (MCAO/R)model with ischemia for 1.5 h and reperfusion for 24 h.After the adminis-tration of DGMI (i.v.),the levels of amino acid and monoamine neurotransmitters in brain tissue were de-tected through HPLC-ECD.Results DGMI down-reg-ulated the concentrations of aspartic acid, glutamic acid,glycine and γ-aminobutyric acid which were in-creased in MCAO/R group.DGMI also reduced the levels of norepinephrine epinephrine,glyoxylic acid, serotonin and 5-HIAA in cortex and hippocampus,and increased adrenaline content compared to the model group.Conclusion DGMI exhibits a protective role in rats with cerebral ischemia /reperfusion injury through regulating amino acids and monoamine neuro-transmitters.
2.Patients undergoing knee arthroscopic surgery at a tertiary hospital in Guangzhou from 2016 to 2022: an epidemiological survey

Objective:To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of the patients who underwent knee arthroscopy in Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University between 2018 and 2022.Methods:A retrospective study was conducted to analyze the data of 2,184 patients who had undergone knee arthroscopy from January 2018 to December 2022 in Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University. The data of the patients' gender, age, disease diagnosis, place of residence, hospitalization time, and hospitalization costs were collected to analyze the epidemiological characteristics of the patients.Results:Of the 2,481 patients, 1,427 were males and 1,054 females with an age of 35.9 (26.0, 51.4) years. From the year 2018 to the year 2022, respectively, 344, 339, 344, 632, and 822 patients were admitted. No statistically significant differences were found in the comparison of the patients' gender or age between years ( P>0.05). The top 3 diseases diagnosed were dislocation, sprain and strain of the knee joint and ligaments (40.2%, 998/2,481), intra-articular disorder of the knee (30.7%, 761/2,481), and synovitis and tenosynovitis (5.5%, 136/2,481). The differences were statistically significant in disease diagnosis, place of residence, hospitalization time, and hospitalization costs between the years ( P<0.05). The main disease diagnosed was dislocation, sprain and strain of the knee joint and ligaments for males (47.3%, 675/1,427) and intra-articular disorder of the knee for females (32.2%, 339/1,054). The proportion of patients coming from Guangzhou gradually increased from 22.4% (77/344) in 2018 to 55.8% (459/822) in 2022. The hospitalization time for the patients in 2020, 2021, and 2022 was significantly shorter than that in 2018 and 2019, showing a significant decrease from 2020 to 2021 and from 2021 to 2022 ( P<0.05). The hospitalization costs for the patients showed an increasing trend from 2018 to 2021, with a significant increase in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 in comparison with 2018, but the costs were significantly decreased in 2022 compared with 2021 (all P<0.05). Conclusions:From 2018 to 2022, the knee arthroscopy-related surgeries showed an increasing trend year by year. More males underwent knee arthroscopy than females. Knee injuries were mostly diagnosed in male patients. The patients coming from Guangzhou increased year by year. The hospitalization time showed a shortening trend, and the hospitalization costs decreased from 2022.
3.Spine curvature and the cardiopulmonary exercise endurance of adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis

Objective:To quantify any correlation between the severity of spinal curvature of an adolescent with idiopathic scoliosis and their cardiopulmonary exercise endurance.Methods:The cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) results and the full-length spinal X-rays in a standing position of 64 adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis were reviewed retrospectively. Independent t-tests were used to compare the two datasets obtained from those with left or right thoracic scoliosis. The correlation between the Cobb angle and cardiopulmonary exercise endurance was analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficients, multiple factor linear regression and two-stage linear regression.Results:After adjusting for gender, age, height and weight, the multiple linear regression analysis showed that the Cobb angle was significantly negatively correlated with maximum tidal volume (β=-0.013) and significantly positively correlated with the rate of respiration (β=0.421). The relationship between the Cobb angle and cardiopulmonary exercise endurance was non-linear. With a Cobb angle > 34°, a 1° increase reduces cardiopulmonary exercise endurance by a factor of 1.4 on average. At smaller Cobb angles the corresponding increase is about 0.87 times.Conclusions:The Cobb angle is a negative predictor of ventilation during exercise among adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis. The more severe a patient′s spinal curvature, the lower the cardiopulmonary exercise endurance is likely to be.
4.Discussion on Material Basis of Different Parts of Mulberry with Different Effects Based on Molecular Connectivity Index

ObjectiveTo explore the material basis for the difference in the efficacy of different parts of mulberry based on molecular connectivity index (MCI). MethodBy referring to the relevant literature at home and abroad and traditional Chinese medicine systems pharmacology database and analysis platform (TCMSP) database, the chemical composition database of mulberry-source medicinal materials was established. Venn analysis was carried out on the components among mulberry-source medicinal materials. The components in the database were divided into 10 categories, and the composition information was analyzed. According to MCI value, all components of mulberry-source medicinal materials were divided into different groups. The angle cosine method was used to calculate the MCI similarity. The average MCI values of the common component group from 0-8 orders and CI of mulberry-source medicinal materials were calculated. ResultThe components with high similarity such as (+)-cycloolivil, 1′-methoxy-2′-hydroxydihydromollugin, kuwanon, morusin and 1-deoxynojirimycin were selected as potential pharmacodynamic components. Mulberry-source medicinal materials could be divided into five component groups. The similarity between component groups and total components was 0.760-0.999, and the similarity between component groups was 0.248-0.999. In Mori Ramulus, Mori Folium, Mori Cortex and Mori Fructus, the average MCI values of their flavonoids from 0-8 orders were 4.57, 4.59, 6.41, 4.24, respectively. The average MCI values of alkaloids from 0-8 orders were 2.65, 4.55, 2.58, 2.78, respectively. The average CI values from 0-8 orders were 5.51, 5.49, 5.44 and 2.88, respectively. ConclusionIt is preliminarily concluded that there are differences in the flavonoids and pathways of hypoglycemic effects between Mori Cortex and the other three mulberry-source medicinal materials. The MCI values of alkaloids from 0-8 orders in Mori Folium and Mori Fructus were higher, but their inhibitory activity of α-glucosidase were lower than those of Mori Ramulus and Mori Cortex. The structural characteristics of the total components of Mori Fructus represented by CI were quite different from the other three mulberry-source medicinal materials.
5.Inhibition of FOXO3a/BIM signaling pathway contributes to the protective effect of salvianolic acid A against cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury.

Salvianolic acid A (SalA) is an effective compound extracted from traditional Chinese medicine Bunge. The Forkhead box O3a (FOXO3a) signaling pathway plays crucial roles in the modulation of ischemia-induced cell apoptosis. However, no information about the regulatory effect of SalA on FoxO3a is available. To explore the anti-cerebral ischemia effect and clarify the therapeutic mechanism of SalA, SH-SY5Y cells and Sprague-Dawley rats were applied, which were exposed to oxygen glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) and middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) injuries, respectively. The involved pathway was identified using the specific inhibitor LY294002. Results showed that SalA concentration-dependently inhibited OGD/R injury triggered cell viability loss. SalA reduced cerebral infarction, lowered brain edema, improved neurological function, and inhibited neuron apoptosis in MCAO/R rats, which were attenuated by the treatment of phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase (PI3K) specific inhibitor LY294002. SalA time- and concentration-dependently upregulated the phosphorylation levels of protein kinase B (AKT) and its downstream protein FOXO3a. Moreover, the nuclear translocation of FOXO3a was inhibited by SalA both and , which was also reversed by LY294002. The above results indicated that SalA fought against ischemia/reperfusion damage at least partially the AKT/FOXO3a/BIM pathway.
7.J-shaped association between dietary zinc intake and new-onset hypertension: a nationwide cohort study in China.

We aimed to investigate the relationship of dietary zinc intake with new-onset hypertension among Chinese adults. A total of 12,177 participants who were free of hypertension at baseline from the China Health and Nutrition Survey were included. Dietary intake was assessed by three consecutive 24-h dietary recalls combined with a household food inventory. Participants with systolic blood pressure ≽ 140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ≽ 90 mmHg or diagnosed by a physician or under antihypertensive treatment during the follow-up were defined as having new-onset hypertension. During a median follow-up duration of 6.1 years, 4269 participants developed new-onset hypertension. Overall, the association between dietary zinc intake and new-onset hypertension followed a J-shape (P for non-linearity < 0.001). The risk of new-onset hypertension significantly decreased with the increment of dietary zinc intake (per mg/day: hazard ratio (HR) 0.93; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.88-0.98) in participants with zinc intake < 10.9 mg/day, and increased with the increment of zinc intake (per mg/day: HR 1.14; 95% CI 1.11-1.16) in participants with zinc intake ≽ 10.9 mg/day. In conclusion, there was a J-shaped association between dietary zinc intake and new-onset hypertension in general Chinese adults, with an inflection point at about 10.9 mg/day.
