AIM To investigate the anti-inflammation protective effects of sodium ferulate (SF) on colitis rats and its mechanism. METHODS The colitis model of rats was produced by intracolon enema with acetic acid. SF and 5-ASA were used intracolonically for a week. The colon mucosadamage index (CMDI) was evaluated. Nitric oxide (NO), myelopexoxidase (MPO), prostaglandin (PGE_2), and the levels of expression of constitutive nitric oxide synthase(cNOS), induce nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and nuclear factor-kappaBp65(NF-?Bp65) in the rats colon were detected by corresponding kits and immunohistochemical technology. RESULTS SF (200,400,800 mg?kg -1 ) can decrease the extents of CMDI and the levels of NO, MPO, PGE_2, the expression of cNOS, iNOS, COX-2, and NF-?Bp65 in model group in a dose-dependent manner while the expression of COX-1 changes littlely. CONCLUSION SF is a NOS and partial selective COX-2 inhibitor and show therapeutic effect on colitis in rats.

CD40 and its receptor CD40L are a very important pair of co-stimulating molecule in immune response, which have extensive biological effects. After stimulating CD40 signal, it can exert corresponding function through MAPK (JNK, ERK, p38) pathway, PI3K cascade, as well as NF-κB and STAT. The CD40 signal is closely related to tumor immunity, this moleculer has already become targeted-molecule for cancer treatment. Recently, there have been many anti-CD40 monoclonal antibodies displaying good anti-cancer effect, among which CHIR-12.12, SGN-40 and CP-870, 893 developed rapidly and successively have entered clinical research stage. This review focuses the status of anti-CD40 monoclonal antibody, including distribution of CD40, physiological function of CD40, CD40 and tumor immunity, anti-CD40 monoclonal antibodies and so on.

This study aims to develop a method for determination of beta-elemene, curcumol, germacrone and neocurdione in the volatile oil of Curcuma phaeocaulis, and to provide the basis of the quality control method for the volatile oil of C. phaeocaulis and the related preparations. Based on GC-MS, the 4 main compounds were simultaneously determined, with the internal standard n-tridecane. The Agilent 19091S-433 column (0.25 microm x 250 microm x 30 m) was adopted at the temperature of 250 degrees C, the programmed temperature method (60 degrees C for 1 min, 5 degrees C x min x to 110 degrees C for 5 min, 1 degrees C x min(-1) to 140 degrees C, 5 degrees C x min(-1) to 160 degrees C, 10 degrees C x min(-1) to 240 degrees C) was used. Helium gas was used as the carrier gas at a constant flow rat of 1 mL x min(-1), with an injection volume of 1 RL. Mass spectra were taken at 70 eV; the ion-source temperature was 200 degrees C. The relation time and character acteristic ions for each target compound were determined by full scan mode and SIM, and m/z 85.1, 93.1, 121.1, 107.1 and 180.1 were the detection ions of n-tridecane, beta-elemene, curcumol, germacrone and neocurdione. As a result, beta-elemene, curcumol, germacrone and neocurdione were all detected with good separation. They were all in a good linear relationship within each concentration scope. The average recovery rates were in the range of 98.2%-101%. So, the method can be used to control the quality of the volatile of C. phaeocaulis Val. and the preparations related.

Objective To investigate the effect of prolonged stroboscopic illumination exposure on the growth of eyeball of guinea pig. Methods Thirty 2-week-old guinea pigs were randomized into three groups ( n=10 for each) . Two strobe-reared groups were raised with 20 Hz sinusoidal and 20 Hz square wave stroboscopic illumination, respectively. The control group received usual light illumination. The illumination intensity was 500 lux. All animals underwent refraction and biometric measurements prior to and after 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks of treatment. Finally, flash electroretinograms were com-pared, and retinal microstructures were examined. Results There was a significant correlation between refractive errors and axial eye elongation, and myopia increasing was observed with eye elongation. After 8 weeks of treatment, the animals raised in 20 Hz sinusoidal and 20 Hz square wave stroboscopic illumination were (-0. 75 ± 0. 79)D and (-1. 50 ± 0. 91) D more myopic than the group raised in continuous illumination. The implicit time of the a-wave was delayed by 3. 8 and 7. 9 ms, respectively. No significant difference was found in retinal ultrastructures among the three groups. Conclusions Chronic exposure to 20 Hz sinusoidal or square wave stroboscopic illumination alters the emmetropization of the guinea pig eye to some extent.

Journal of Southern Medical University 2017;37(7):993-996
OBJECTIVETo explore the value of red blood cell distribution width (RDW) in assessment of the severity of acute pancreatitis (AP).
METHODSThis retrospective analysis was conducted among 527 patients with AP treated in our department from May, 2013 to May, 2016. According to the severity of the condition, the patients were classified into mild acute pancreatitis (MAP) group, moderately severe acute pancreatitis (MSAP) group and severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) group, with 105 subjects without AP as the control group. The demographic data and data of RDW were collected from all cases to evaluate the value of RDW in assessing the severity of AP in comparison with classic evaluation indicators glucose (Glu) and calcium (Ca).
RESULTSThe patients with AP and the control subjects showed significant differences in RDW, Glu and Ca (P<0.05). RDW and Glu was significantly higher but Ca was significantly lower in SAP patients than in MAP and MSAP patients (P<0.05). Binary classification logistic regression analysis showed that Glu (P<0.05, OR=2.343), Ca (P<0.05, OR=2.182) and RDW (P<0.05, OR=3.374) were all independent risk factors for AP. The area under the ROC curve for predicting SAP decreased in the order of RDW (0.801), Glu (0.658), and Ca (0.227).
CONCLUSIONRDW is a useful indicator for evaluation of the severity of AP.

OBJECTIVETo explore the incidence of dementia among elderly people in Xi'an and its related risk factors.
METHODSSubjects that had been studied on the prevalence of dementia were follow-up, and the incidence of dementia, Alzheimer disease (AD) , and vascular dementia (VD) were counted by person-years. The clinical diagnosis on dementia,AD and VD were based upon the 3rd Edition of Diagnostic and Statistical of Manual of Mental Disorder, Revised version (DSM-III-R) and NINCDS-ADRDA criteria.
RESULTS2197 subjects of non-dementia being identified in 1998, were re-surveyed in 2001. Out of them, 47 new cases of dementia including 37 cases of AD and 8 cases of VD were identified, with an annual incidence rates of dementia, AD and VD as 0.68%, 0.54% and 0.12% among those of 55 years and over and 0.89%, 0.69% and 0.17% in 65 years and over, respectively. Analysis from single factor logistic regression showed that age and education but not gender were closely related to the occurrence of AD. On the contrary, age, hypertension and stroke were closely related to the occurrence of VD.
CONCLUSIONThe incidence of dementia in the "Xi' an cohort" was similar to that being reported from other countries. AD and VD were an age-related diseases but education seemed to have had great protective effect while lack of formal education served as risk factor to AD.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the patterns of changes in serum levels of of D-dimer, fibrinogen (FIB) and fibrin degradation product (FDP) during catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) in patients with acute lower-extremity deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and explore their clinical significance.
METHODSFrom June, 2014 to June, 2015, 50 patients with acute lower-extremity DVT received CDT. The serum concentrations of D-dimer, FIB and FDP were measured before, during and after CDT in all the subjects, with 50 healthy subjects serving as the control group.
RESULTSCompared with the control group, the patients in DVT group showed significantly increased serum levels of D-dimer (29.17±38.67 vs 0.21 ±0.27 µg/mL), FIB (3.66±0.95 vs 3.32±0.65 g/L) and FDP (76.14±131.48 vs 1.08±0.73 µg/mL) before CDT (P<0.05). Based on the effect of CDT, the patients with DVT were divided into recanalization group (n=34) and failed recanalization group (n=16), and the patients with recanalization had significantly increased serum concentration of D-dimer and FDP (P<0.05) and decreased FIB level (P<0.05) compared with those with failed recanalization at 24 h of CDT. D-dimer, FDP, and FIB showed no significant changes in the patients with failed recanalization after the procedure (P>0.05). Correlation analysis showed that serum D-dimer (r=0.66, P<0.05) and FDP (r=0.50, P<0.05) at 24 h of the procedure were positively correlated with the outcomes of CDT.
CONCLUSIONSerum levels of D-dimer, FIB and FDP are important indicators for evaluating and predicting the effectiveness of CDT in patients with acute DVT.

Lung cancer is mostly characterized by a pulmonary solid mass on CT. In rare cases, patients do not have these typical manifestation but present with diffusely-distributed small nodules and pulmonary bullae, which can easily be misdiagnosed. A special case of lung adenocarcinoma was managed in our hospital from September 24th to December 19th in 2016. Under high-resolution CT,multiple nodules were seen in both lungs, mostly in the upper lungs, involving the pleura and interlobular fissures. Some nodules had cystic changes. A large bulla was seen in the left upper lung. Its wall was thickened with multiple nodules. Lung adenocarcinoma was pathologically confirmed.
