Chinese Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism 2001;0(05):-
There were significant increase in urine protein excretion, raised malondialdehyde(MDA) level and expressions of NF-?B,p22phox and p47phox in renal tissue, and significant decrease in reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase, vitamin C and E levels in type 2 diabetic Goto-Kakisaki rats after 12 weeks. There was obvious histomorphologic change in the kidneys. All the above indices were improved by intraperitoneal injection of?-lipoic acid(35 mg/kg q.o.d).Besides,significant positive correlations were found of MDA level to p22phox,p47phox and NF-?B in the renal tissue,?-lipoic acid seems to protect the diabetic kidney in this diabetic rat model via antioxidative effects.

Objective To investigate the nutritional status, body composition, and energy metabolism of hepatocarcinoma patients undergoing surgical treatment and explore the relationships of the nutritional status with body composition and energy metabolism. Methods Totally 112 hospitalized hepatocarcinoma patients undergoing surgical treatment met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled as the intervention group, and another 100 patients with cholelithiasis during the the same period were enrolled as the control group.Their general clinical data including body mass index(BMI),arm circumference, grip, albumin, prealbumin, energy expenditure, and body composition were collected. The nutritional status was assessed by the scored patient-generated subjective global assessment(PG-SGA).The relationships of the nutritional status with body composition and between energy metabolism were analyzed. All the data were analysed by SPSS 16.0 software package. Results The arm circumference [(23.9±3.6)cm vs.(25.3±4.5)cm,t=2.57,P=0.014],hand grip[(31.7±6.0)kg vs.(39.2±7.6)kg,t=8.19,P<0.001],serum albumin[(32.5±4.7)g/L vs.(36.5±7.2)g/L,t=4.92,P=0.007] and prealbumin[(0.172±0.052)g/L vs.(0.263±0.077)g/L,t=10.3,P=0.004] of the intervention group were significantly lower than the control group. The total malnutrition rate of the intervention group was 37.5%(42 cases at levels B and C),and that of the control group was 14.4%(14 cases at levels B and C)(X2=19.73,P<0.001).The extracellular water significantly increased in the intervention group compared with that of the control group[(15.35±2.21)L vs.(13.51±2.73)L,t=5.54,P<0.001];however,the somatic cell mass [(27.54±4.42)kg vs.(29.03±4.38)kg,t=2.53,P=0.012],fat mass[(13.44±4.23)kg vs.(17.36±5.21)kg,t=6.18,P<0.001],and muscle mass[(43.11±6.27)kg vs.(48.17±7.13)kg,t=5.63,P<0.001] had significantly decreased compared with the control group. The measured value of rest energy expenditure(mREE)[(6 581.62±1 201.70)kJ/d vs.(6 290.73±1 071.68)kJ/d,t=1.98,P=0.042] of the intervention group was significantly higher than the control group(P=0.042),and the respiratory quotient(RQ)was also significantly higher(0.87±0.10 vs.0.85±0.06,t=2.72,P=0.027).The extracellular fluid(PG-SGA A vs.B P=0.035;A vs.C P<0.001;B vs.C P=0.042)were significantly increased, and the number of somatic cells(A vs.B P=0.015;A vs.C P=0.001;B vs.C P=0.022),fat(A vs.B P=0.026;A vs.C P=0.003;B vs.C P=0.022)and muscle mass(A vs.B P=0.029;A vs.C P=0.011;B vs.C P=0.036)were decreased with the deterioration of nutritional status, resting energy expenditure(A vs.B P=0.023;A vs.C P=0.002;B vs.C P=0.032),and RQ(A vs.C P=0.004;B vs.C P=0.012)were also increased with the deterioration of nutritional status, and there was significant difference among three groups. Conclusions The incidence of malnutrition is high in hepatocarcinoma patients undergoing surgical treatment. The patients can have lower lean body mass, more water retention, and higher energy metabolism, which may worsen along with the deterioration of nutritional status.

Bone turnover is regulated by local concentrations of cytokines such as osteoprotegerin (OPG) and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappaB ligand (RANKL). To explore the in vivo biological function of Opg and the mechanism of osteoporosis due to deficiency of Opg, Opg knockout mice have been generated through homologous recombination. Opg-/- mice exhibit a sharply decrease in bone density and strength as expected. The number of osteoclasts in Opg-/- mice significantly increases. Morphologically, osteoclasts appear more cuboidal in shape in Opg-/- mice than those of wt mice, suggesting that active osteoclastogenesis occurs in the absence of Opg. In consistent with this finding, an increase of osteoblast activity was also observed with accelerated mineral accumulation rate by histomorphometric measurement and elevated serum alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP) in Opg-/- mice. Interestingly, more than 50% of 2-month-old Opg-/- mice manifest medial calcification of aorta with comparable serum concentrations of calcium and phosphorus to wt mice. In conclusion, Opg-/- mice have a high-bone-rurnover type osteoporosis. The aortic calcification in Opg-/- mice is not due to abnormality of calcium and phosphorus metabolism. The mechanism underlying aortic calcification in Opg-/- mice needs to be further investigated.

Objective:To amendment a tool of theory of mind (TOM) tests that can be applied to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in mainland China, and assess the ability of ToM of children with ASD.Methods:The items of the ToM tests were revised by observing and recording events of children's life.Totally 200 normal children were selected in line with the standard from kindergarten to Grade 6 for formal tes-ting.With 156 valid data,Pearson correlation coefficient and Cronbach α coefficient were established for the test.Three experts were invited to make sure the content validity.Researchers randomly selected 30 normal children for retest purpose after 2 months.Twenty five children with ASD were tested and compared with normal children's test scores. Results:The revised test included 39 entries, which was divided into three sub-tests,42 points in total. The correlation coefficient of three subtests of the tests was 0.54-0.77,the correlation coefficient between the test and the subtest was 0.62-0.93 (Ps < 0.01).The scores of three experts for the test were 114,108,and 105.The total scores and subtest scores were lower in children with ASD than in normal children (Ps <0.01).The Cronbach a coefficient of the test was 0.84,Cronbach a coefficients for three subtest were 0.83,0.80,and 0.78,respectively.The retest reliability was 0.84,and reliabilities for three subtest were 0.75,0.74,and 1.00.Conclusion:The revised Theory of Mind Tests for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder are fulfilled mostly in line with psychometric testing requirement. It might be a selection to measure the ability of theory of mind of children with ASD in mainland China.
