Objective To find a new method for quality control of polysaccharides by establishing the fingerprint profiles of polysaccharides extracted from Guifu Dihuang Wan. Methods The polysaccharides extracted from Guifu Dihuang Wan were hydro-lyzed partially under appropriate hydrolysis condition with acid, and the fingerprint profiles of the hydrolyzates was obtained by HPLC. Microsoft Excel 2002 was applied for calculating the similarity of fingerprint profiles, and informatton analysis of these profiles was performed by a software for evaluating fingerprint profiles of traditional Chinese medicine. Results Fingerprint profiles of the hydroly-zates of polysaccharides from 10 of Guifu Dihuang Wan products, produced by different manufacturers, were obtained. It was observed that the similarity of eight products was greater than 0.99,while the similarity of the other two was 0.92 and 0.94,respectively. Con-clusion This method is technically feasible for the quality control of polysaccharides from Guifu Dihuang Wan.

Objective To explore the incidence rate, total incidence numbers and possible impacting factors of non-motor symptoms (NMSs) in Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods The NMS questionnaire (NMS Quest) was used to investigate 131 out-patients diagnosed with PD, and the prevalence of each item, the total NMS numbers and their relationships with clinical features were assessed. Results All of the patients, who were distributed in every stage of PD, had NMSs and each case with 11 items on average. Autonomic symptoms such as nocturia and constipation were the most frequent ones. The patients over 65 versus less than 65 years old had a higher prevalence in a number of items such as olfactory disturbance, dysphagia and constipation. At the same time, the rigidity subtype patients had a higher prevalence in depression items than the tremor subtype ones. The total number of NMS was positively correlated with course of disease, age, UPDRS score and Hoehn & Yahr (H&Y) stage. Conclusions NMSs are common among PD patients. While the prevalence of each item may vary with different clinical features, the total number of NMS is increased with the severity of PD. More attention should be paid to the diagnosis and rational treatment of the NMSs.

BACKGROUND:Recently, the effects of lumbar facet joint morphology on the onset of degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis have been a discussion point. However, the discussion mainly concerned CT manifestations of joint angle and osteoarthritis. Studies have shown that the changes in cross-sectional area of paraspinal muscle were considered as the essential marker for the pathological diagnosis of degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis. However, previous studies limited the accuracy of the conclusion due to smal sample size, young age, and measurement.
OBJECTIVE:To observe changes in MRI images of bilateral paraspinal muscles after degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis.
METHODS:This study adopted the method of retrospective study, selected 80 cases of degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis as lumbar spondylolisthesis group, and 80 healthy persons as control group. Image J software was utilized to measure cross-sectional areas of bilateral erector spinae and psoas major muscle on the L 3-5 vertebral endplate levels using T2-weighted MRI in both groups. The ratio of relevant data was calculated.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Compared with the control group, the ratio of cross-sectional area of paraspinal muscle was increased on the same side and the same level in the lumbar spondylolisthesis group (P<0.05), and the mean value of cross-sectional area of bilateral psoas major muscle was decreased on the same level (P<0.05). No significant difference in the mean value of cross-sectional area of left and right erector spinae was detected on the same level (P>0.05). Results indicated that the changes in cross-sectional area of paraspinal muscle could induce degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis, and could be considered as a diagnostic standard for degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis.
