1.EFFECT OF BEE POLLEN ON SERUM IGM AND IGG CONCEN TRATION IN NORMAL AND IMMUNODEPRESSED MICE
Chinese Pharmacological Bulletin 1987;0(01):-
The effect of bee pollen on serum IgM and IgG concentration was investigated in normal and immunodepressed mice. The levels of serum IgM and IgG in normal NIH mice were 0.80? 0.07mg/ml ( X ? SD ) and 11. 42 ?2. 31 mg/ml respectively. The concentration of IgM and IgG were all markedly lowered in immunodepres-ssed mice induced by cyclophosphamide 100 mg/kg/d sc for 4d,hydro-cortison 100 mg/kg/d sc for 6d,60Co ?-irradiation 600 rads and S-180 tumor-bearing in comparison to normal control, while IgG and IgM content in mice treated with bee pollen ( Pollen of Brassica campes-tris L. ) 10 g/kg/d orally for 1 month were significantly increased. The results showed that the stimulating effect of bee pollen on humoral immunity may be the base of beneficial effect in human being.

Journal of Clinical Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery 2014;28(8):580-584
A male of 17 years old complained of bilateral nasal congestion with mouth breathing for half a year. The physical examination showed patency of bilateral nasal cavity. Nasopharyngeal fiberscope revealed a huge spherical smooth reddish mass at the nasopharyngeal posterior wall and the back-end of nasal cavity blocking the entire postnaris and contacting with bilateral tubal tori, the size of which is about 3.5 cm x 2.5 cm. The nasopharyngeal 3D-CT showed a low density cystic mass area in the nasopharynx with smooth edges, and the CT value is approximately 32.4 HU. No exact enhancement was observed. The cystic mass originated from and compressed the back end of nasal septum. A semicircular defect in the leading edge of clivus was observed, and the inferior wall of sphenoid sinus is compressed uplifted upwards. The nasopharyngeal MR showed that the nasopharyngeal lesion presented short T1 and long T2 signals with multiple small wall nodules around. Neither the lesion nor the peripheral nodules can be significantly enhanced by enhancement scan. After a nasal endoscopic surgery, the case was definitely diagnosed as nasal septum back-end huge cyst.

The effect of bee pollen of Brassica campestris L. and its alcohol extract on lipid peroxidation was observed in vivo and in vitro. The results showed that the production of lipid peroxides in normal liver hotnogenate of mice and elevation of production of lipid peroxides induced by cysteine and FeSO4 in homogenate were found to be inhibited significantly by in vitro addition of alcohol extract of bee pollen. The elevation of lipid peroxides in serum and liver in adult mice induced by alloxan 75 mg/kg(iv)or by administration of peroxidized corn oil 0.2 ml/mouse was markedly inhibited by oral administration of bee pollen (10 g? kg-1?d-1)for 20 days as compared with respective control groups. The level of lipid peroxide in geriatric mice was also markedly lowered by oral administration of bee pollen (10 g?kg-1?d-1)for 3 months as compared to non-treated geriatric mice.Based on the above in vitro and in vivo experimental results, it may be suggested that bee pollen and its alcohol extract protect tissues against destruction by lipid peroxides.

Objectives:To explore the possibility of using experimental animal models as a new means for studying the pathogenesis and symptomatologic development of radiation-induced lung injury, and provide theoretical and experimental evidences for early prevention and treatment with the traditional Chinese medicine.Methods:80 female Wistar rats were divided randomly into the model group and control group with 40 rats in each group respectively. The rats in model group were anesthetized and fixed, and a 2cm?3cm area of the right lungs received 6mV X-ray radiation at 3Gy?2/w and a maximal 10/5w.Eight rats randomly selected from each group were sacrificed at the end of weeks of 3,5,8,12 and 26.Diagnostic techniques of TCM were employed to analyze symptomatological and developmental characteristics of TCM in radiation-induced lung injury during exposure by dynamic examination and comparison of living rats, gross lung samples and tissue sections. Results: Signs and symptoms including redness around nose and eyes, yellowish secretion, tachypnea, dry stool, lethargy, sluggishness, inactiveness were observed in model group in early stage of radiation exposure, which consistent with dominant heat in the interior and primordial qi exhaustion syndrome.Swollen lungs, bright redness on surface and red bleeding patches were observed in early stage of radiation;microscopic examination showed interstitial tissues, and readily visible congestion, hemorrhage and edema of pulmonary interstitial tissues, consistent with damaged blood collaterals by heat and blood escaping circulation syndrome. In the later stage of radiation exposure, the lungs showed dark appearance, apparent purple petechia, hard texture and poor elasticity.Microscopic examination showed remote hemorrhage foci, pulmonary capillary stasis or closure, and focal fibrotic clumps, consistent with obstruction of collaterals by blood stasis syndrome. No abnormal changes were observed in the control group. Conclusions:Animal experiments can redeem the clinical inadequacy of traditional inspection, auscultation and olfaction, interrogation and feeling pulse and palpation diagnostic techniques, modern pathological methods can be utilized to study symptomatology of traditional Chinese medicine.Symptomatological and developmental characteristics of'heat toxin impairment in radiation-induced lung injury characterized by heat damaging pulmonary collateral syndrome in early stage and pulmonary collateral stagnation syndrome in the advanced stage'can be revealed at living organism, gross lung sample and microscopic pulmonary tissue levels, thus providing theoretical basis for early prevention and treatment of radiation-induced lung injury using'cooling blood to remove apthogenic heat'.

Acta Nutrimenta Sinica 1956;0(03):-
Immunoenhancement activity of bee pollen and its acetone extract was studied in normal, sarcoma-180 bearing, cyclophosphamide- and antilymphocyte serum-treated mice.Bee pollen and its acetone extract given orally for 30 days could significantly increase the production of serum anti-SRBC hemolysin (HC50) and the number of spleen plaque forming cells (PFC) in primary response to sheep red blood cell (SRBC) in young and adult mice. The acetone extract of bee pollen could significantly prevent the decrease of HC50) the number of PFC and specific rosette forming cells (SRFC), and the quantitative hemolysin of spleen cells (QHS) against SRBC in S-180 bearing, cyclophosphamide- and antilymphocyte serum-treated mice respectively. These results suggested that bee pollen of Brassica campestris L. and its acetone extract have immune-enhancement activity.

Objective To analyze the mutations in keratin 1 (KRT1), KRT9 and KRT10 genes in a Chinese family with epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma (EPPK). Methods Clinical data were collected from a family with EPPK. Genomic DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood of 12 family members, including 6 patients and 6 unaffected members, as well as from 50 unrelated normal human controls. PCR was performed to amplify all the exons and flanking sequences of KRT1, KRT9 and KRT10 genes followed by DNA sequencing. Results A missense mutation C.1436T > C was found in the highly conserved helix termination motif of KRT1 gene of all the patients, resulting in a substitution of isoleucine by threonine at position 479 of the KRT1 protein. No mutation was found in the unaffected members or unrelated controls. Conclusions The missense mutation C.1436T > C in K.RT1 gene is likely to be the main cause of the phenotype of EPPK in this family. This is the first report of a pedigree with KRT1 gene mutation-induced EPPK in China.

Objective To investigate the influence of Shenlongjiannaotang on the function of learning and memory of D-glalactose induced aging mimetic rats, and the concentrations of norepinephrine(NE),dopamine(DA) and 5-hydroxy tryptamine(5-HT) in cerebrum. Methods 50 rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: normal control group, model group, and high/middle/low dosage prescription group of Shenlongjiannaotang. The memory function was tested with Morris water maze. The concentrations of NE,DA and 5-HT were detected with HPLC with fluorescence spetrometer. Results In the model group, the latency of model mice increased, and the correct number decreased significantly compared with normal group(P<0.05).After 6 weeks administering Shenlongjiannaotang, the latency decreased and the correct number increased significantly in high dosage group, compared with those of the model group(P<0.05).The contents of NE and DA reduced in model group, and Shenlongjiannaotang could increase NE and DA contents of rats cerebrum(P<0.05).Conclusion Shenlongjiannaotang could improve the learning and memory function of D-galactose induced aging rats, which may related with the increase of NE and DA contents in cerebral tissue. The effects depend on the dosage of Shenlongjiannaotang.
