We present two cases of individual pulmonary vein atresia without vestige of an involved pulmonary vein. On CT, we noted the absence or interruption of normal pulmonary venous structures, and the presence of abnormal vascular structures that represented collaterals for the involved lung parenchyma. On angiography, the atretic pulmonary vein was found to drain into the other ipsilateral pulmonary veins through the collaterals.

A pulmonary embolism is a rare, but well described complication of percutaneous vertebroplasty; the majority of cases are caused by acrylic cement. Here, for the first time, we report a case of pulmonary embolism due to a thrombus in the right atrium, which was caused by an acrylic cement foreign body in the right atrium and central veins 6 years after percutaneous vertebroplasty. This case suggests that an acrylic cement foreign body should be considered as a potential source of thrombus formation in patients that develop a pulmonary embolism following percutaneous vertebroplasty.

Anomalous unilateral single pulmonary vein is a rare abnormality of the pulmonary venous system characterized by a tortuous pulmonary venous confluence which never crosses the diaphragm and drains all arterialized blood from a lung to the left atrium, into which it normally flows. Cardiac and pulmonary anomalies are not associated. We report a case in which this condition was comfirmed by the findings of chest radiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance angiography.

CT colonography is a promising technique that provides both multiplanar and endoluminal perspective of the air-filled, distended, cleaned colon. "Virtual colonoscopy" refers to computer-simulated 3D endoscopic visualization of the colonic mucosal surface. Unlike barium enema and conventional colonoscopy, CT colonography can give cross- sectional and endoluminal images of the colon and enables to image extracolic abnormality. CT colonography offers potential advantages over colonoscopy in that it causes little discomfort to the patient, and does not need sedation. It is more accurate in spatial location of lesions and creates no complication. To date, most studies assessing CT colonography have focused in technical development, less aggressive bowel preparation, and computer-aided diagnosis of polyp detection. In the future, CT colonography would be a diagnostic and screening tool for the colorectal polyp and cancer.

Superior vena cava (SVC) obstruction is associated with the gradual development of venous collaterals. We present a rare form of systemic-to-pulmonary subpleural collateral pathway that developed in the bridging subpleural pulmonary veins in a 54-year-old woman with complete SVC obstruction. This uncommon collateral pathway represents a rare form of acquired right-to-left shunt due to previous pleural adhesions with an increased risk of stroke due to right-to-left venous shunting, which requires lifelong anticoagulation.

Scimitar syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly that is characterized by hypoplasia of the right lung and the right pulmonary artery with anomalous pulmonary venous drainage to the inferior vena cava. The scimitar vein is usually visible on chest radiographs, but may be obscured by the heart. It is essential for surgical correction to establish the point of drainage of the anomalous vein and associated anomalies. There are recent reports of familial total anomalous pulmonary venous return suggesting heritable forms of this anomaly. Although genetic factors are believed to have important roles in congenital heart disease, few genes involved in heart development have been located. We report a case of familial chromosome 9 inversion with Scimitar syndrome in an offspring who presented with dextrocardia. Evaluation with magnetic resonance cineangiograph imaging demonstrated an anomalous pulmonary vein draining into the inferior vena cava above the diaphragm and hypoplasia of the right lung and the right pulmonary artery. Chromsome analysis showed pericentric inversion of chromosome 9, inv 9 (p13, q21), in the patient and his mother as well. A brief review of the related literature is also included.

Congenital obstuction of pulmonary vein without anomalous drainage can cause long-standing pulmonary congestion and pulmonary arterial hypertension, and it may include stenosis of individual pulmonary veinsor total pulmonary vein atresia. We reviewed seven cases of pulmonary vein obstruction, five of which accompanied other cardiac anomalies. Right pulmonary veins were involved in all seven cases including one bilateral case. Pulmonary veins were occluded totally in five and partially in three lungs. Pumonary catheterization and angiography were done for diagnosis. Chest radiographs of total occlusion cases showed decreased lung volume, features of pulmonary edema, interstitial lesions, and pleural thickening, which were quite specific, whereas pulmonry venous dilatation was dominant findings in partial obstruction cases. Pulmonary perfusion scans (n=3) showed total perfusion defects in the cases of total occlusion of veins. MR imaging (n=2) demonstrated total occlusion of pulmonary veins in the venoatrial junction in two, and membranous focal obstruction in one lung. Two patients had pneumonectomy and histological confirmation, Although catheterization and angiography are essential for the diagnosis, MR imaging is thought to be useful for the diagnosis of pulmonary vein obstruction.

We report a case of central venous stenosis due to a structural deformity caused by a tuberculosis-destroyed lung in a 65-year-old woman. The patient presented with left facial edema. She had a history of pulmonary tuberculosis, and the chest X-ray revealed a collapsed left lung. Angiography showed leftward deviation of the innominate vein leading to kinking and stenosis of the internal jugular vein. Stent insertion improved her facial edema.

Stromal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, especially of the esophagus, are rare. We had a case of malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumor(GIST) of the esophagus. A 46 years old woman was admitted for abnormal mass shadow in the chest radiograph. The mass was originated from the lower thoracic esophagus, and compressed the right lower pulmonary vein and the inferior vena cava. We removed the tumor externally without injuring of the esophageal mucosa via right posterolateral thoracotomy. The tumor was positive for CD 34 and CD 117, and diagnosed malignant GIST of the esophagus.
