1.An Experimental Study on Comedogenicity of Several External Contactants.

The present study was performed to evaluate the comedogenicity of several cosmetic ingredients, vegetable oils, steroid and sulfur. The test materials were applied to one ear canal of rabbits for 6 weekdays for 2 weeks. The results were as follows: l. Among the 14 cosmetic ingredients, no comedogenicity was shown in propylene glycol and petrolatum, mild comedogencity in squalene, acetylated lanolin, polyethylene glycol, cetyl aIcohol and Tween 80. Propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate and oleic acid showed moderate comedogenicity. Severe comedogenicity was observed in myristyl myristate, isopropyl myristate, butyl stearate and myristyl lactate. 2. Moderate to severe comedogenicity was shown in olive oil, sesame oil and corn oil and moderate comedogenicity in sulfur (8%) and betamethasone dipropionate (0.06%) R. Histopathologic grading were paralleled the findings of the naked eye.

2.The growth inhibitory effect of some vegetable oils on Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the growth inhibitory effects of some vegetable oils on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Lactobacillus casei (L. casei). METHODS: Two bacterial strains and 5 kinds of test solutions (3 experimental groups: orange essential oil, olive oil, soybean oil; 1 positive control group: chlorhexidine solution; 1 negative control group: broth medium) were used in this study. S. mutans and L. casei pellets were exposed to 1 ml of one of the test solutions for 1 minute. Then, the treated bacterial cells were incubated in fresh broth medium for 0, 4, 8, 16, and 24 hours. The optical density of the broth medium was measured using an ELISA reader at 620 nm. A nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test (with Mann-Whitney U tests) was performed to compare the change in optical density between different groups at different time points. RESULTS: Bacterial growth was significantly inhibited in all experimental groups compared to the negative control group. The growth of L. casei was less affected by experimental oils than that of S. mutans. Orange essential oil had the maximum growth inhibitory effect on S. mutans up to 8 hours, similar to that in the positive control group (P<0.01). Experimental oils had greater growth inhibitory effect on L. casei than chlorhexidine solution. CONCLUSIONS: This in vitro study confirmed the growth inhibitory effect of some vegetable oils on S. mutans and L. casei. Rising of the mouth using these vegetable oils is expected to have an anti-plaque effect, but additional clinical studies are needed to confirm this.

3.Application of a lipid emulsion for parenteral nutrition support in intensive care patients following gastrointestinal surgeries.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of parenteral nutrition support with a lipid emulsion formulation (containing soybean oil, medium chain triglycerides, olive oil, and fish oil [SMOF]) in intensive care patients following major gastrointestinal surgeries.
METHODSAccording to a randomized, prospective and case-controlled design, 72 intensive care patients following major gastrointestinal surgeries between January and December, 2014 were randomized equally into SMOF group and control group to receive parenteral nutrition support with SMOF and medium or long chain lipid emulsion, respectively. Before and at 4 and 9 days after commencement of parenteral nutrition support, the patients were examined for alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total bilirubin (TBIL), albumin (propagated), C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and endotoxin levels. The patients' average length of stay in intensive care unit (ICU), the days of using antibiotics, and the incidence rate of postoperative complication were recorded.
RESULTSOn day 4 postoperatively, the levels of CRP and IL-6 were significantly lower in SMOF group than in the control group (t=2.669 and 2.676, respectively; P<0.05), and on day 9, the patients in SMOF group showed significantly lower levels of ALT, TBIL, CRP and IL-6 (t=2.487, 3.497, 3.762, 2.180, respectively; P<0.05) than the control group, but ALB and endotoxin levels remained comparable between the two groups. The average length of stay in ICU and the days of using antibiotics were significantly shorter in SMOF group than in the control group (t=2.94 and 2.17, respectively; P<0.05); SMOF group showed a lower incidence of postoperative infections than the control group, but the difference was not statistically significant (χ² =1.047, P>0.05).
CONCLUSIONFor intensive care patients following major gastrointestinal surgeries, postoperative parenteral nutrition support with SMOF can effectively reduce the release of inflammatory mediators, protect important visceral functions, reduce postoperative complications, shorten the length of ICU stay, and improve the prognosis of the patients.

4.Investigation of bacteremia after toothbrushing in orthodontic patients.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence rate of bacteremia following toothbrushing with toothpastes composed of several antibacterial agents and compare the results with the conventional oral hygiene maintaining methods in orthodontic patients. METHODS: This clinical study included 100 adult orthodontic patients who were divided into 4 groups. Each group comprised of 25 patients, wearing fixed orthodontic appliances. In the first group, bacteremia was assessed after toothbrushing without using any toothpaste. In the second group, a 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate mouthrinse was used before brushing with no toothpaste. In the third group, subjects brushed with a commonly used toothpaste which did not include an additional antimicrobial agent. The fourth experimental group used toothpaste which included tea tree oil, clove oil, peppermint oil and bisabolol as antimicrobial elements. Pre- and post-brushing blood samples were obtained using a strict aseptic technique. All samples were microbiologically evaluated using blood culture bottles. RESULTS: Toothbrushing in orthodontic patients yielded to an increase in the occurrence rate of bacteremia when using normal toothpaste or no toothpaste at all. CONCLUSIONS: The use of chlorhexidine mouthwash before toothbrushing, and brushing with antimicrobial toothpaste did not show a statistically significant difference in preventing the occurrence of bacteremia (p > 0.05).

5.Optimal Culture Condition for Antifungal Susceptibility Tests of Malassezia globosa.

BACKGROUND: Although numerous culture conditions for Malassezia species were suggested, there were not so many objective evaluation articles in the literature. OBJECTIVES: We examined the various culture conditions for Malassezia globosa. METHODS: Malassezia globosa culture conditions were assessed by Dixon's agar, modified Leeming-Notman medium in diverse oil content and temperature conditions. RESULTS: Maximum growth rate of Malassezia globosa was achieved at 3% olive oil. The optimal temperatures for the maximal growth of M. globosa were observed at 32~34degrees C. CONCLUSION: In this study, we established the optimal culture condition for M. globosa, and confirmed its excellent utility for the antifungal susceptibility tests for M. globosa and M. restricta. Our results can help the investigators plan to do the prospective researches involving Malassezia species, such as the susceptibility test for newly developed antifungal agents.

6.Screening, purification, and characterization of an extracellular lipase from Aureobasidium pullulans isolated from stuffed buns steamers.

An extracellular lipase from Aureobasidium pullulans was obtained and purified with a specific activity of 17.7 U/mg of protein using ultrafiltration and a DEAE-Sepharose Fast Flow column. Characterization of the lipase indicated that it is a novel finding from the species A. pullulans. The molecular weight of the lipase was 39.5 kDa, determined by sodium dodecyl sulfonate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The enzyme exhibited its optimum activity at 40 °C and pH of 7. It also showed a remarkable stability in some organic solutions (30%, v/v) including n-propanol, isopropanol, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and hexane. The catalytic activity of the lipase was enhanced by Ca2+ and was slightly inhibited by Mn2+ and Zn2+ at a concentration of 10 mmol/L. The lipase was activated by the anionic surfactant SDS and the non-ionic surfactants Tween 20, Tween 80, and Triton X-100, but it was drastically inhibited by the cationic surfactant cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). Furthermore, the lipase was able to hydrolyze a wide variety of edible oils, such as peanut oil, corn oil, sunflower seed oil, sesame oil, and olive oil. Our study indicated that the lipase we obtained is a potential biocatalyst for industrial use.

7.Solidification of volatile oil with graphene oxide.

To evaluate the properties of solidifying volatile oil with graphene oxide, clove oil and zedoary turmeric oil were solidified by graphene oxide. The amount of graphene oxide was optimized with the eugenol yield and curcumol yield as criteria. Curing powder was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of graphene oxide on dissolution in vitro and thermal stability of active components were studied. The optimum solidification ratio of graphene oxide to volatile oil was 1:1. Dissolution rate of active components had rare influence while their thermal stability improved after volatile oil was solidified. Solidifying herbal volatile oil with graphene oxide deserves further study.

8.Report of an Unusual Case With Severe Fecal Impaction Responding to Medication Therapy.

Fecal impaction is a disorder characterized by a large mass of compacted feces in the rectum and/or colon, which cannot be evacuated. For mild and moderate fecal impaction, recommended treatments include stool softeners, oral mineral and olive oil, and edema; for severe fecal impaction, manual removal is needed and sometimes laparotomy may be indicated if medical therapies are not effective. Here we report a case with severe fecal impaction who did not defecate for 75 days. We treated this patient with vegetable oil, Chinese traditional medicine and enema in sequence. After 12 days of therapy, she evacuated hard fecal masses, and the symptoms were relieved.

9.Antinociceptive effects of vitamin E in formalin-induced nociceptive response in rats.

BACKGROUND: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are critically involved in generating pain in various painful conditions, including neuropathic and inflammatory pain. This experiment was conducted in order to assess the antinociceptive effects of vitamin E in the modulation of pain in rats subjected to the formalin test. METHODS: Five percent formalin was injected into the hind paw after intraperitoneal injection of either vitamin E 1 g/kg dissolved in olive oil or olive oil alone. The Number of flinches were measured in a 5 minute interval for 1 hour. RESULTS: Formalin injected into the left hind paw induced a biphasic nociceptive behavior. Intraperitoneal injection of vitamin E diminished the nociceptive behavior during phase 1 and 2. CONCLUSIONS: Systemic administration of vitamin E produces analgesia in a rat model of formalin-induced hyperalgesia. Furthermore, vitamin E affects pain of peripheral origin.

10.Screening and confirmation of copper chlorophyll adulteration in olive oils.

OBJECTIVETo develop a qualitative screening method by high performance liquid chromatograph-photo-diode array (HPLC-PDA) and a confirmation method by ultra performance liquid chromatograph-quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Qtof-MSMS) for Copper Chlorophyll in olive oils.
METHODSCommercial liposoluble copper chlorophyll diluted by petroleum ether was purified and concentrated by sep-pak silica solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridges, the injection was separated by symmetry shield RP18 column, and detected by the PDA at the wavelength 430 nm. The injection was separated by ACQUITY UPLC BEH (18)C and determined by UPLC-Qtof-MSMS in negative atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mode, then confirmed by the exact mass of parent ion and secondary fragment ion provided by the mass spectrum. Samples from supermarket were screened for Cu-pyropheophytin a by established method.
RESULTSCu-pyropheophytin a could be used for discrimination as indicative compound whether the olive oils were mixed with copper chlorophyll. 25 samples including olive oil, soybean oil and spirulina from supermarket were screened, Cu-pyropheophytin a was found in one type of olive oil.
CONCLUSIONThis method could be used for screening and qualitative analysis of Copper Chlorophyll in olive oils for its accuracy , reliability and excellent specificity.
