To investigate the therapeutic effects and associated complications of allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (allo-PBSCT). 40 patients with various malignant hematopoietic diseases received allo-PBSCT. The preparative regimens were based on BUCY2 or modified BUCY2. The acute graft-versus host disease (aGVHD) was prevented by cyclosporin A and short-term MTX regimen in all patients. Two patients from donors with one fully mismatched HLA on DRB1 locus and 4 from unrelated donor also administered Zenapox (CD25 MAb) at dosage of 1 mg/kg every day on the day before transplantation and day 4 after transplantation. These 6 patients were also treated with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF). Transfusion of the donor cells: The median of the transfused nucleated cells was 5.38 x 10(8)/kg and that of the CD34+ cells was 7.8 x 10(6)/kg respectively. All the patients gained hematopoietic reconstruction except one who died of infection before engraftment. Seven patients got II degrees-IV degrees aGVHI) and the incidence was 17.5%. Fourteen patients got cGVHD and the incidence was 53.8% in the patients who survived over 6 months. Twenty-eight patients had fever or other characteristics of infection. The median follow-up time was 13.8 months. The incidence of transplantation related mortality (TRM) was 17.5% and 2 patients relapsed (5.0%). It was concluded that allo-PBSCT can reconstruct hematopoiesis quickly and is a favorable therapeutic method for leukemia.

Objective To investigate the prognostic factors for chronic heart failure and the prognostic ability of copeptin, big endothelin-1(Big ET-1)and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP)in patients with chronic heart failure. Methods To study 1 5 9 consecutive patients hospitalized for chronic heart failure.Serum concentration of copeptin,NT-proBNP,cTnI,CKMB and plasma Big ET-1 as well as left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF)and NYHA classⅠtoⅣ on admission were measured.Cardiac events were found by patients to discharge after 360~490 days, prospectively. Results During a median follow-up period of 385 days, the endpoint of recurrence for cardiac events was reached in 65 patients with 159 heart failure.Multivarlate canonical correlation analysis shows the older and the higher NYHA classification as well as the lower LVEF in patients with heart failure. There were higher concentration of copeptin,Big ET-1 and NT-proBNP.On a Cox proportional hazards regression models analyses, age, copeptin,Big ET-1 and NT-proBNP were found to be the inde-pendent predictors of cardiac events.Risk ratio (RR)were 1.215,1.236,4.031 and 13.052,respectively.Logistic regression models analyses, copeptin,Big ET-1 and NT-proBNP were found independent predictors of death.Odd ratio (OR)were 4.003,2.477 and 1.235,respectively.Conclusion Measurement of copeptin,Big ET-1 and NT-proBNP in patients with chronic heart failure can help to identify patients at higher risk for cardiac events and patients for prognosis.

Objective To observe the effects of electro-acupuncture ( EA ) on learning, memory and the morphology of hippocampal neural tissues in rats with a model of chronic cerebral ischemia. Methods One hundred and twenty male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. Chronic cerebral ischemia models were successfully established in 104 of them, and those rats were randomly divided into an EA group and a model group with 52 rats each. These were further subdivided into 1,2, 4 and 6 week subgroups with 13 rats in each. The EA group was given EA. The changes in spatial learning and memory ability were observed using a Morris water maze. The morphological changes in hippocampal nerve tissue were observed by HE staining. Results The escape latency in the EA group was significantly different from the model group at the 2nd, 4th and 6th week. The nerve cells in the dentate gyrus were more tightly and consistently lined-up and had rich layers, and the structures in the EA group were better than in the model group. Conclusions EA can improve spatial learning and memory and promote the repair of injury after cerebral ischemia.

Abstract?AIM: To obtain the prevalence and risk factors of symptomatic dry eye disease ( SDED ) among college students in China.?METHODS:Population-based cross-sectional study. Students in Medical School of Lanzhou University were approached. A questionnaire was used to evaluate the prevalence of SDED and its risk factors. The diagnosis of SDED was based on reported symptoms and was established if the participants reported “often” or “all the time” once or more for 6-item questionnaire. Positive tests included a tear-film breakup time ( TBUT)≤10s and a fluorescein staining score ( FSS ) ≥1. Demographic information and possible factors that may contribute to SDED were analyzed in a step-wise multivariate logistic regression modelto assess risk factors of SDED.? RESULTS: There were 1139 participants ( 84. 37%response rate ) have completed the questionnaire, 475 males and 664 females aged 16-26y. The prevalence of SDED was 18. 70% [95% confidence interval ( CI)= 16. 59-20. 81]. A TBUT of ≤10s and a FSS≥1 were noted in 47. 67%(95% CI=44. 95-50. 57) and 13. 97%(95% CI=11. 95-15. 99) for all participants, respectively. The multivariate regression analysis revealed the following risk factors:daily reading time of≥4h(OR=1. 58,95% CI=1. 15-2. 18), daily computer use of≥4h ( OR= 1. 52, 95% CI= 1. 02-2. 25), and constant eyeglasses wearing (OR=1. 54,95%CI=1. 08-2. 13). The female gender, refractive surgery and contact lens ( CLs) wearing were not risk factors for SDED in this analysis.? CONCLUSION: The prevalence for SDED is high in Chinese college students. The risk factors include daily reading time of≥4h, daily computer use of≥4h and constant eyeglasses wearing.
