Objective To investigate the level of serum retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) and related factors in chronic hepatitis C (CHC). Methods Fifty-six patients with CHC (CHC group) and 35 healthy volunteers (control group) were selected. Serum RBP4 level was measured by ELISA method.Fasting blood glucose ( FBG ), triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol ( TC ), alanine aminotransferase (ALT),γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GT) were measured, HCV-RNA level was tested by qualitative polymerase chain reaction(q-PCR). Results There were no significant difference in FBG, TC,TG, γ-GT between two groups (P > 0.05 ). Serum RBP4 level in CHC group [(33.38 ± 6.43 ) mg/L] was higher than that in control group [(26.11 ± 3.35) mg/L](P< 0.01),the CHC patients with ALT normal (26 cases) had significantly higher RBP4 level [( 38.96 ± 4.09) mg/L] compared with ALT abnormal [30 cases, ( 28.53 ± 3.43 ) mg/L](P < 0.01 ). ALT level was negative with RBP4 in CHC group (r = -0.6368, P < 0.05 ). Conclusion Serum RBP4 level is significantly associated with CHC and negatively correlated with ALT level, but not associated with FBG, TC,TG, γ-GT and HCV-RNA.

Aim To improve the sensitivity of phycobiliprotein immunofluorescence assay(PBPIFA), by introducing into bridged avidin biotin(BRAB) technique, known as BRAB-PBPIFA. Methods Using ELISA as a gold standard, effectiveness of three assays(direct PBPIFA, BRAB-PBPIFA and ELISA)were compared in simultaneous detection of standard antigen and 500 serum samples. Results BRAB improved greatly sensitivity of PBPIFA in detecting antigen of low concentration, and detection rate of weakly positive samples could increase by one times and a half. In the applying, protein-free blocking agent Tween 20 to BRAB-PBPIFA,possessed better blocking effect. Conclusion Combination of BRAB technique with PBPIFA can improve the detcctive sensitivity.

Objective To evaluate the safety of dynamic anterior plate fixation for cervical distractive flexion injuries and compare its rigidity between different types of plate design. Methods Twelve sets of cadaveric calf spine were used in this test. All the specimens were made into distractive flexion injury models (C4-C5) ac- cording to Allen's method. After discectomy and grafting, they were randomized into three groups in which Orion, Codman, and Window instrumentations were used respectively. The stiffness of each construct was tested in flexion, extension, lateral bending and axial torsion conditions sequentially. Results Compared with an intact cervical spine, the range of motion (ROM) of an injured cervical spine increased whatever plate was applied. Orion in- strumentation presented stiffness the closest to that of the normal control, except for less torsional stiffness. Codman instrumentation provided stiffness close to that for normal and Orion groups only in lateral bending. Window's was the weakest mad not enough in all kinds of movement. Conclusions Static anterior fixation is the first choice for cervical injuries. Dynamic plate fixation may sacrifice stiffness to some extent, especially when a shifting kind of design is to be chosen.
