BACKGROUND: Parallel-polarized light (PPL) photography evaluates skin characteristics by analyzing light reflections from the skin surface. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the significance of quantitative analysis of PPL images in rosacea patients, and to provide a new objective evaluation method for use in clinical research and practice. METHODS: A total of 49 rosacea patients were enrolled. PPL images using green and white light emitting diodes (LEDs) were taken of the lesion and an adjacent normal area. The values from the PPL images were converted to CIELAB coordinates: L* corresponding to the brightness, a* to the red and green intensities, and b* to the yellow and blue intensities. RESULTS: A standard grading system showed negative correlations with L* (r=−0.67862, p=0.0108) and b* (r=−0.67862, p=0.0108), and a positive correlation with a* (r=0.64194, p=0.0180) with the green LEDs for papulopustular rosacea (PPR) types. The xerosis severity scale showed a positive correlation with L* (r=0.36709, p=0.0276) and a negative correlation with b* (r=−0.33068, p=0.0489) with the white LEDs for erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (ETR) types. In the ETR types, there was brighter lesional and normal skin with white LEDs and a higher score on the xerosis severity scale than the PPR types. CONCLUSION: This technique using PPL images is applicable to the quantitative and objective assessment of rosacea in clinical settings. In addition, the two main subtypes of ETR and PPR are distinct entities visually and optically.

Journal of Zhejiang University. Medical sciences 2011;40(4):432-435
OBJECTIVETo develop a new color matching method in dentistry by application of digital photography.
METHODSDigital photographs were obtained of Vitapan 3D-Master shade guide and natural teeth under the same condition, the L*a*b* values of each digital photography were assessed and analyzed by Photoshop CS4.
RESULTSThe Vitapan 3D-Master shade guide was divided into 5 groups, the L* values were similar in each group, but decreased from group 1 to 5. The a* values of L1.5 and L2.5 were minimum, R1.5 and R2.5 were maximum and M1-M3 were intermediate. Compared with Vitapan 3D-Master shade guide, the L*a*b* values of natural teeth were higher.
CONCLUSIONDigital photography can basically reflect the color of Vitapan 3D-Master shade guide, and provides a reference for color matching in dentistry.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the classification and the treatment of the asymmetrical breast deformity.
METHODSFrom April of 1997 to October of 2001, 90 patients with the asymmetrical breast deformity were undergoing in the study. The patients were classified and the results of the treatment were evaluated with the pre-operative and post-operative photographs.
RESULTSThe deformities of the asymmetrical breast could be divided into seven types according to the selected treatment techniques. The results were very satisfactory in 77 cases (87%), general satisfactory in 10 cases (11%) and unsatisfactory in 3 cases (2%). There were 54 cases (60%) with complete symmetry results, 32 cases (35.5%) with general symmetry and 4 cases (4.5%) with still asymmetry.
CONCLUSIONThe indications for treatment of the breast asymmetry deformities should be correlated with the classification so as to achieve more satisfactory results, in fact, it is still difficult to be a complete symmetry.

Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2013;30(4):743-747
In order to improve image de-noising effect,a new threshold function de-noising method based on wavelet analysis was proposed, which can overcome the continuity problem of the hard-threshold function, and eliminate the constant deviation of the soft one by constructing a new threshold function. Experimental results showed that the new threshold function could obtain higher peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) in image de-nosing. A better denoising effect could be obtained compared with the hard-threshold function, the soft one, the semi-soft one, the cubic polynomial interpolation semi-soft one, and the asymptotic semi-soft one.

Chinese Journal of Medical Instrumentation 2008;32(1):6-9
The surgical dexterous suturing and knotting movements are photographed with binocular stereo vision and the movements' locus is captured through identifying the RGB values in a series of key-frames. Then a normal movement path of knot-tying is obtained through curve-fitting and smoothing. And meanwhile, the workspace of knot-tying manipulation in microsurgeries is got. And thus, a good foundation is laid for the design of an automatic knotting mechanism and for the establishment of a virtual surgery training system.
