Pharmaceutical Journal 1998;272(12):8-11
Coptosapelta tomentosa (Blume) Vahl. ex Heyne var. dongnaiense (Pit.) Phamh. Rubiaceae, found in the rain forest areas of the central part of Vietnam, has been used in folk medicine for treatment of rheumatism or washing wounds to prevent infection. There has been no report on the pharmacognostical characteristics and pharmacological activities of this plant, up to now. In this report, morphological, and microscopic characteristics, determination of ash and extractable matter were examined; qualitative and quantitative analysis of chemical constituents of this plant were investigated. Saponins, triterpenes, coumarins were found as the main components of all roots, stems and leaves. Anthraquinones and flavonoids, however, were only found in the roots. The amounts of total saponins and anthraquinones in stems and roots were also estimated

Molecular pharmacognosy is a science of classification and identification, cultivation and protection, and production of active ingredients of graduated drugs at the molecular level. The proposal of molecular pharmacognosy allows the research of crude drugs to advance from the microscopic level to the genetic level. Pueraria lobata root, as a medicinal and edible plant, has high application value and economic value. There are many varieties that are easy to cause confusion, and it is not easy to distinguish and identify according to traditional identification methods. Moreover, the research of P. lobate root at the genetic level is still relatively shallow. the study received extensive attention of scholars. This article reviews recent research on molecular identification of P. lobate, transcriptome sequencing, cloning and synthesis of functional genes of P. lobate root in recent years in order to provide references for further promoting the development and utilization of P. lobate root and its active ingredients.

Molecular pharmacognosy has developed as a new borderline discipline. Using the method and technology of molecular pharmacognosy, a wide range of challenging problems were resolved, such as the identification of Mongolian medicinal raw materials, etiology of endangerment and protection of endangered Mongolian medicinal plants and animals, biosynthesis and bioregulation of active components in Mongolian medicinal plants, and characteristics and the molecular bases of Dao-di Herbs. So molecular pharmacognosy will provide the new methods and insights for modernization of Mongolian medicine.

Molecular pharmacognosy( MP) is a new interdisciplinary science, which integrates the pharmacognosy and molecular biology, and focuses on the crude drugs' classification and identification, cultivation and protection, and production of active ingredients at the molecular level. Pogostemon cablin is one of the ten major southern medicines in China,MP research on this famous herb has developed on the basis of traditional research methods, and achieved certain results. This article summarized the MP research achievements of P. cablin in recent years, the prospect of this field is also discussed to provide references for the protection, development and utilization of P. cablin resources.

5.Corrections on medicinal resource of Gramineae in Guizhou province and Guiyang city.
China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica 2005;30(23):1814-1816
OBJECTIVETo confirm the medicinal plants of Gramineae and their distribution in Guiyang city.
METHODThrough field investigations and comparing the collected speciments and literatures, the geographical distribution and functions of the medicinal species were investigated.
RESULT24 new medicinal species of Gramineae were found in Guizhou, while 5 species were absent in Guizhou. And 1 was first recorded for medicinal uses, 3 species newly added, and the latin name of 1 species was corrected.
CONCLUSIONThere are 72 medicinal species and 4 varieties in Guiyang.

In order to improve quality of molecular pharmacognosy teaching, the open experiment is applied. Under the guidance of tutors, students conduct the whole experiment independently. Students' abilities of independent thinking and comprehensive-experimental conduction were enhanced in the open experiment. Meanwhile, the authors discuss the problems of open experiment and propose some reflection and suggestions.

8.Discussion on criterions of endanger and protection levels of traditional Chinese medicine herbs.
China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica 2005;30(18):1474-1477
To efficiently protect the endangered traditional Chinese medicine herbs is essential for the sustainable development of traditional Chinese medicine. On the bases of present species endanger and protection levels, problems in the traditional Chinese medicine herbs are analyzed. The endangered levels of traditional Chinese medicine herbs should refer to the standard of IUCN, and the protection levels should adopt qualitative and quantitative analysis based on the characteristic of traditional Chinese medicine herbs. Some qualitative and quantitative factors are discussed, some useful information was also provided for the establishment of protection levels of traditional Chinese medicine herbs.

OBJECTIVETo present a detailed pharmacognostic study of the leaf of Cayratia trifolia (C. trifolia) Linn. (Vitaceae), an important plant in the Indian system of medicine.
METHODSThe macroscopy, microscopy, physiochemical analysis, preliminary testing, fluorescence analysis of powder of the plant and other WHO recommended methods for standardization were investigated.
RESULTSLeaves are trifoliolated with petioles (2-3 cm) long. Leaflets are ovate to oblong-ovate, (2-8 cm) long, (1.5-5 cm) wide, pointed at the tip. The leaf surface shows the anisocytic type stomata covered with guard cells followed by epidermis layer. Leaf surface contents including veins, vein islet and vein termination were also determined. Transverse section of leaf shows the epidermis layer followed by cuticle layer and vascular bandles (xylem and phloem). The mesophyll is differentiated into palisade and spongy parenchyma. Abundant covering trichomes emerge from the upper epidermis. Trichomes are uniseriate and multicellular. Strips of collenchyma are present below and upper layer of epidermis.
CONCLUSIONSIt can be concluded that the pharmacognostic profile of the C. trifolia is helpful in developing standards for quality, purity and sample identification.

OBJECTIVETo find out the licorice(Glycyrrhiza uralensis) distribution area, resource complexion and resource reserves of northeast China, to analyze the cause of the swing of the pendulum of resources, to put forward the countermeasure of resource protection and to provide evidence for the establishment of relative statutes.
METHODCombination of visit-inquisition and sample-square investigation involving the resource complexion of the 32 counties and cities in the northeast China wasmade.
RESULT AND CONCLUSIONThe east distribution boundary and the whole distribution current of licorice in the northeast China were determined the northeast licorice distributing region was compartmentalized into three typical sub-regions, and the licorice population character and artificial disturbing status in main counties of every sub-region were described. The licorice reserves were also figured out. At the same time, the nature and the artificial factors that influenced the swing of the pendulum of licorice resource were analyzed, and the correlative safeguard measure was brought forward.
