1.The recovering of the radical surgery of mastoid bone by the temporal facio-musscle
Journal of Practical Medicine 2002;435(11):40-41
95% cases of otitis mastoid were sucessfully treated by the reservation and surgery and the rest 5% cases with this were treated by many different methods aiming to management of the hollows of the radical surgery of mastoid bone according to the cause or individuals. The recovering of the partly poor epithelization in the surgical hollow reported effectively. 13 patients received a surgery in the Central Military Hospital 108 during 1987-1996 were studied. The indicators of age, gender, symptoms before receiving operation and status of the surgical hollow were used to classify the result

The rhabdomyosarcoma(RMS), a leading malignant soft tissue tumor in the pediatric population, occurs most commonly in the craniocervical region. RMS has involved the temporal bone approximately 7% in the literature. Petrous bone invasion was very rare and the overall outcome was always fatal, in spite of the efficacy of multimodality therapy, until recent years. The authors report a case of primary RMS in the temporal bone invading petrous bone and the result of multimodality treatment.

Mucocele is a benign, encapsulated lesion, lined by epithelium and filled with mucus. Found mostly in the frontal and ethmoid sinus, sinonasal mucoceles cause several symptoms depending on the location. We report a case of mucocele found in the petrous apex that caused ear fullness. It was completely treated with endoscopic sphenoid marsupialization.

Schwannomas of the facial nerve are uncommon tumors, accounting for about 0.8% of all intrapetrous mass lesion.1-3) Very rarely do these lesions acts as expansile tumors of the petrous bone that extend to involve the intracranial cavity.1-10) Recently we experienced 1 case of facial nerve schwannoma unusually extending into middle cranial fossa which was removed by transcochlear and middle fossa approach. So we report the case with review of literature.

Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society 2006;39(6):459-463
This report describes a case of diffuse neurofibroma(DNF) that presented with spontaneous intratumoral hemorrhage. A 31-year-old man with cutaneous manifestations typical of neurofibromatosis type 1(NF1) was referred to hospital with a progressively expanding scalp swelling. Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) showed an acute hematoma surrounded by a dense mass on the parietooccipital scalp. Plain skull radiographs and a computed tomography(CT) scan revealed bony defects in the occipital bone around the lambdoid suture and the skull base, including the sphenoid and petrous bones. The tumor extended to the upper cervical region and infiltrated through the fascia of the musculature. The tumor and adjacent soft tissue were highly vascular, which made surgical resection difficult. We describe the clinical, radiological and pathological features of this patient and discuss the surgical methods used to avoid a life-threatening hemorrhage during surgery.
