From June 1993 to October 2001, in Central Institute of Pediatrics and Viet Duc Hospital, 13 cases of plastic surgery were performed to restore the clitoris and vagina. Among them, 12 female patients with virilisant adrenogenital syndrome had had indication of clitoris restoration surgery, 1 patient with true hermaphrodism. We used the method of partial penectomy combined with penis lengthening to treat 2 cases of penile cancer. The penile lengths were lengthened by 3-4 cm. This method could retain the penis and sexual function to the maximum degree. And a few patients could avoid total penectomy and micturate on their feet. This operation is very simple and safe, with no complication.

OBJECTIVETo introduce a new procedure for repairing coronal or subcoronal hypospadias with severe chordee.

METHODSA modified technique of elongating the anterior urethra, combined with the MAGPI procedure, was used to repair the coronal or subcoronal hypospadias in 19 severe chordee patients (aged 5 to 12 years). The fibrous bands on the ventral aspect of the penis were excised to correct the chordee. If the penile curvature still remained, the corpora cavernosa dissection and elongation could be applied.

RESULTSAll of the patients were successfully treated by this procedure in one stage.

CONCLUSIONSThe modified technique of the anterior urethra elongation, combined with MAGPI procedure, might be one of the simple and effective method for repairing coronal or subcoronal hypospadias with severe chordee.

Penile augmentation is an important part of penile surgery, the demand for and supply of which has increased because of mens desire for a larger penis. There is some controversy about the rationality of this operation, because the surgical indications and standardization of surgical techniques are not confirmed. Nevertheless, the clinical necessity for penile augmentation is beginning to be accepted as is aesthetic surgery in women. Penile augmentation is performed mainly by using dermal fat grafting for girth enhancement and skin reconstruction or ligament release for lengthening. Several new techniques and modification have been introduced. This review describes recent advances in the field of penile augmentation surgery.

The penis is an important genitourinary organ, whose deficiency not only causes physiological dysfunction but inflicts mental and psychological traumas to the patient. Ideal phalloplasty should address the following requirements: (1) It should give a good shape; (2) It should ensure appropriate size and sexual intercourse; (3) It should make the phallus sensitive to both touching and sexual desire; (4) The donor site morbidity should be inconspicuous. To satisfy the above-mentioned requirements, doctors both at home and abroad have made increasing efforts for the improvement of phalloplasty. Recent progress in phalloplasty is reviewed in this article.

Tissue engineering follows the principles of cell transplantation, materials science and engineering toward the development of biological substitutes that would restore and maintain normal function. These new techniques have been recently introduced into the field of andrology. Based on the latest advances, the present paper afferds a general prospect of the future direction of the development of tissue engineering in andrology.
