Red cell immunologic adherent function and Se quantity were measured in 48 normal children of Keshan disease area and the reaction of red cell C3bR to these children. The results showed that the Se quantity and the rosette formation rate of red cell C3bR of normal children in Keshan disease area were significantly lower than that in the control(P0.05).

Objective To explore the feasibility of prediction of subacute infarct lesion volumes by processing ADC maps based on ADC cut-off values in patients with acute stroke. Methods MRI was performed in 20 patients with clinically diagnosed acute infarct less than 6 h after stroke onset. The MRI included a DWI and conventional MRI.The follow-up MR examinations of all the patients were carried out within 4-7 days after admission. The brain tissue, which showed abnormal high intensity both in DWI at the baseline and FLAIR at the reexamination , was regarded as the area of the initial ischemia core.Graphic-penumbra was regarded as the difference between initial DWI and follow-up FLAIR.The ADC values of the ischemia core, graphic-penumbra and the contralateral normal brain tissue , the relative ADC (rADC) were measured. The rADC value of the graphic-penumbra was defined as the ADC cut-off values.GE medical system based on ADC cut-off values was also tested in these patients to obtain ADC maps. The lesion volumes, the abnormal area seen on the DWI , ADC maps and follow-up FLAIR, were also measured.rADC values in different areas were analyzed by paired Student t test.Relationship between baseline DWI , ADC map and follow-up FLAIR was analyzed using Spearman rank-order correlation test , and Kruskal-Wallis H test was used to compare the volumes among three groups. Results Absolute ADC and rADC values gradually increased from the core to the periphery of the ischemic lesion. The absolute ADC values statistically differed from those on the contralateral side for both ischemia core and graphic-penumbra.The rADC values were significantly decreased in the ischemia core ( 0.620 ±0.116 ) compared with the graphic-penumbra values (0.809 ±0.097;t =8.083,P <0.01).The lesion volume of follow-up FLAIR [16.3 (4.7, 29.0) cm3 ] correlated highly with both volume predicted with the ADC map [13.5 (4.8, 25.4) cm3] (r=0.967, P<0.01) and baseline DWI volume [11.0 (4.4,30.4) cm3] (r=0.950, P<0.01).There was no difference between the volume of DWI , ADC map and follow-up FLAIR(H=0.168, P>0.05).Conclusions Data shows the high feasibility of prediction of subacute infarct lesion volumes by processing ADC maps based on ADC cut-off values in patients with acute stroke , without intravenous contrast material, and it provides a new method for outcome prediction.

BACKGROUNDWith the development of natural orifice trans-luminal endoscopic surgery, studies on transoral video-assisted thyroidectomy in preclinical experiments (e.g., human anatomy and animal trials) were progressing gradually. From 2009 to 2011, embalmed human cadavers were dissected to define the anatomical location, surgical planes, and related neural and vascular structures to create a safe transoral access to the front cervical spaces. Recently, experimental transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy was performed to verify the feasibility of this approach on 15 fresh specimens.
METHODSFifteen specimens were placed in the supine position with slight neck extension. Endoscopic incision was made on the midline between the Wharton's duct papillae and two other incisions were made on mandibular first premolar buccal mucosa. Sublingual combined bilateral vestibular tunnels were created from oral cavity to the cervical region. The neck subplatysmal working space was insufflated with CO2 at 6-8 mmHg. The bilateral thyroid lobes and central lymph nodes were dissected under craniocaudal view.
RESULTSThree incisions were made in the oral cavity without any incisions on the body surfaces. The distance from the oral cavity to front neck region was the shortest. Bilateral thyroid lobes and central neck region were fully resected via transoral approach. This approach provided a craniocaudal view, in which retrosternal thyroid gland and lymph nodes were easily accessible. The recurrent laryngeal nerve could be identified safely on the inferior cornu of the thyroid cartilage. The only structure at risk was the mental nerve. Camera motion was somewhat limited by the maxillary dentition. The volume of harvested thyroid nodule through sublingual tunnel in the fifteen human cadavers was (40 ± 15) cm(3).
CONCLUSIONThe transoral procedure is progressive and innovative which not only gives the best cosmetic result and minimal access trauma but also provides a craniocaudal view.

BACKGROUNDBased on the excellent medical care and management system for Chinese veterans, as well as the detailed medical documentation available, we aim to construct a Chinese Veteran Clinical Research (CVCR) platform on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and carry out studies of the primary disabling NCDs.
METHODSThe Geriatric Neurology Department of Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital and veterans' hospitals serve as the leading and participating units in the platform construction. The fundamental constituents of the platform are veteran communities. Stratified typical cluster sampling is adopted to recruit veteran communities. A cross-sectional study of mental, neurological, and substance use (MNS) disorders are performed in two stages using screening scale such as the Mini-Mental State Examination and Montreal cognitive assessment, followed by systematic neuropsychological assessments to make clinical diagnoses, evaluated disease awareness and care situation.
RESULTSA total of 9 676 among 277 veteran communities from 18 cities are recruited into this platform, yielding a response rate of 83.86%. 8 812 subjects complete the MNS subproject screening and total response rate is 91.70%. The average participant age is (82.01±4.61) years, 69.47% of veterans are 80 years or older. Most participants are male (94.01%), 83.36% of subjects have at least a junior high school degree. The overall health status of veterans is good and stable. The most common NCD are cardiovascular disorders (86.44%), urinary and genital diseases (73.14%), eye and ear problems (66.25%), endocrine (56.56%) and neuro-psychiatric disturbances (50.78%).
CONCLUSIONWe first construct a veterans' comprehensive clinical research platform for the study of NCDs that is primarily composed of highly educated Chinese males of advanced age and utilize this platform to complete a cross-sectional national investigation of MNS disorders among veterans. The good and stable health condition of the veterans could facilitate the long-term follow-up studies of NCDs and provide prospective data to the prevention and management of NCDs.
