The diagnostic criteria of blood stasis syndrome (BBS) established by the Specialty Committee of Activating Blood Circulation and Removing Stasis, Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine 1986 has been widely used in clinical practice of Chinese medicine. But coronary heart disease (CHD) of BBS has its own features. By using clinical epidemiological methods, establishing the diagnostic criteria for CHD patients of BBS is of great significance in furthering its studies, exerting the advantages of Chinese medicine in preventing and treating CHD, and elevating the clinical efficacy.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the therapeutic effect of Compound Xuanju Capsule on type III prostatitis.
METHODSA total of 242 patients with type III prostatitis diagnosed by the NIH criteria were randomly divided into an experimental and a control group of equal number, the former treated with Compound Xuanju Capsule + Tamsulosin Hydrochloride, and the latter with Quinolinone antibiotics + Tamsulosin and Hydrochloride, both for 6 months. After treatment, we assessed the therapeutic effects based on the NIH-CPSI scores and the improvement of relevant complications.
RESULTSAll the 242 patients completed the treatment. The total effectiveness rate was 77.69% (94/121) in the experimental group, 71.56% (78/109) in those with complications. In comparison, it was only 47.10% (57/121) in the control group, 31.78% (34/107) in those with complications. Both the NIH-CPSI scores and the improvement of complications were significantly higher in the experimental than in the control group (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONCompound Xuanju Capsule has a good therapeutic effect on type III prostatitis.

Journal of Experimental Hematology 2004;12(4):484-488
In order to evaluate relapse predication ability of STR-PCR combining with qualitative RT-PCR for the bar/abl transcripts to the patient with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) fulfilled allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT), 24 patients with CML after allo-HSCT were dynamically investigated for MRD, quantitative analysis of donor chimerism was performed by multiplex PCR amplification of STR markers and capillary electrophoresis with fluorescence detection, qualitative detection of bcr/abl transcripts was detected by nested RT-PCR. The results showed that persistent full donor chimerism (DC >/= 95%) was associated with an absence of MRD. All patients with stable MC (90% = DC < 95%) and bcr/abl negative had a probability of long-term survival with molecular remission, however the result of bcr/abl positivity was not always associated with leukemia relapse, only the patient with decreasing values of donor chimerism as well as bcr/abl positive proved to be in a higher risk of relapse or graft failure. Decrease of donor chimerism in correlation with MRD positive was detected in 5 patients. Three out of five patients had been proved to have a molecular relapse, one out of five patients had developed to cytogenetic relapse and another patient experienced graft failure. It is concluded that the results of STR-PCR in the range of its sensitivity fully correspond with bcr/abl tests in patients. The combination of STR-PCR with RT-PCR will provide a highly sensitive and valuable tool for MRD detection in CML and can identify these high risk patients with molecular or cytogenetic relapse after allo-HSCT.

BACKGROUNDInflammation plays a pivotal role in the formation and progression of ischemic stroke. Recently, more and more epidemiological studies have focused on the association between C-reactive protein (CRP) -717A > G and -286C > T > A genetic polymorphisms and ischemic stroke. However, the findings of these researches are not conclusive.
METHODSWe performed a meta-analysis to determine whether these two polymorphisms are associated with the risk of ischemic stroke. Eligible studies were identified from the database of PubMed, Medline, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, Weipu, and Wanfang. We calculated odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to assess the strength of the association.
RESULTSFour articles were included in our study, including 1926 cases and 2678 controls for -717A > G polymorphism, 652 cases and 1103 controls for -286C > T > A polymorphism. The results of meta-analysis showed that single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) -717A > G was not significantly associated with the risk of ischemic stroke (GG vs. AA, OR = 1.12, 95% CI = 0.83-1.50, P = 0.207; GG + GA vs. AA, OR = 1.04, 95% CI = 0.93-1.17, P = 0.533; GG vs. GA + AA, OR = 1.10, 95% CI = 0.82-1.47, P = 0.220). Meta-analysis of SNP - 286C > T > A also demonstrated no statistical evidence of a significant association with the risk of ischemic stroke (AA vs. CC, OR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.59-1.25, P = 0.348; AA vs. CC, OR = 0.92, 95% CI = 0.80-1.06, P = 0.609; AA vs. CC, OR = 0.89, 95% CI = 0.62-1.30, P = 0.374).
CONCLUSIONSThis meta-analysis demonstrated little evidence to support a role of CRP gene -717A > G, -286C > T > A polymorphisms in ischemic stroke predisposition. However, to draw comprehensive and more reliable conclusions, further larger studies are needed to validate the association between CRP gene polymorphisms and ischemic stroke in various ethnic groups.

Objective To explore the effects of vascular risk factors on cognitive function among the elderly in community. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in 1 269 elderly people ( aged 65 and over) who were randomly selected from three communities. Through face-to-face interview, cognitive function was assessed by mini-mental state examination(MMSE),and blood samples were collected for labo-ratory examination. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the vascular risk factors affecting cogni-tive function. Results Age (( 73. 1 ± 6. 6), ( 71. 3 ± 4. 9),t=4. 603,P<0. 05),education level ( χ2=12. 727,P<0. 05),hypertension (χ2=9. 106,P<0. 05) and LDL-C (χ2=5. 157,P<0. 05) were significantly different in the elderly with or without mild cognitive impairment(MCI). After controlling age, gender and ed-ucation,the logistic regression analysis showed that hypertension(β=0. 378,P=0. 006,OR(95%CI)=1. 44 (1. 10-1. 91)),systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg( β=0. 350,P=0. 011,OR( 95% CI)= 1. 42( 1. 08-1. 86),1 mmHg=0. 133 kPa),and high LDL-C( β=0. 355,P=0. 014,OR(95%CI)=1. 43( 1. 08-1. 89)) were the risk factors of MCI in the elderly in the community. Hypertension alone or high LDL-C (β=0. 365, P=0. 029,OR(95%CI)=1. 44(1. 04-2. 00)) alone was risk factor for mild cognitive impairment in the eld-erly in the community. The risk of mild cognitive impairment in the elderly with hypertension and high LDL- C was 2. 00 times higher than that in the healthy elderly ( β=0. 696,P<0. 05,OR( 95%CI)= 2. 00( 1. 36-2. 97)). Conclusion Mild cognitive impairment in the elderly is closely related to hypertension and elevat-ed LDL-C levels. Multiple vascular risk factors can further increase the risk of cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVETo analyze the promoter methylation levels of p15, CDH1, DAPK and HICI genes of patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and explore the relationship between the level of methylation and clinical features.
METHODSDNA methylation levels of p15, CDH1, DAPK and HICI in peripheral blood (PB) or bone marrow (BM) samples from 52 MDS patients were detected by real-time quantitative PCR. The correlation of the methylation level with clinical features and hematological findings was analyzed. 38 de novo AML patients and 46 normal individuals served as controls.
RESULTSThe methylation levels of p15, CDH1, DAPK and HICI were 16.23 ± 21.69, 6.59 ± 9.39, 0.14 ± 0.11 and 7.81 ± 9.70 in BM, and 14.96 ± 20.16, 6.00 ± 9.26, 0.12 ± 0.14 and 6.74 ± 9.72 in PB, respectively from 18 MDS patients, and the difference between BM and PB was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). The methylation levels of p15 (14.70 ± 18.17) and CDH1 (6.61 ± 8.79) genes in high risk (RAEBI/II) MDS were significantly higher than in low risk (RCMD/RARS/5q-, p15: 1.99 ± 1.59, CDH1: 1.23 ± 1.14 and RCMD, p15: 3.02 ± 3.42, CDH1:1.53 ± 2.06) MDS or control (p15: 1.69 ± 1.82, CDH1: 1.01 ± 1.12) (P < 0.05). The methylation levels of DAPK gene had no difference among subtypes of MDS, and that of HIC1 gene only differed between RAEB I/II (9.16 ± 11.95) and control (2.49 ± 2.26) (P = 0.042). The difference of methylation levels of p15, CDH1, DAPK and HICI in BM was statistically significant among subtypes of MDS (P = 0.001, 0.003, 0.039, 0.023, respectively). And so did of p15 and DAPK in PB (P = 0.013, 0.006, respectively). The methylation level of p15 and CDH1 was significantly correlated with IPSS classification and blasts percentage in BM.
CONCLUSIONSp15 and CDH1 genes are special hypermethylation genes in MDS. Methylation level of HIC1 gene showed an upward tendency from low risk to high risk MDS.
