2.Student Satisfaction and Achievement after Role-playing in a Pediatric Dentistry Class

This study aimed to investigate the effects of learning with role-playing on student satisfaction and achievement regarding behavior management teaching in pediatric dentistry.93 students were divided into 19 groups and randomly assigned to role-play as a doctor, patient, parent, assistant, or narrator. Their performances were evaluated by the instructor and the satisfaction survey was conducted. All participants took the written test and were asked to compare lecture and role-playing with regard to the effectiveness of learning. Statistical analysis was performed with Mann-Whitney U test, Independent T-test, and Kruskal-Wallis test.68 students (73.1%) who believed that the role-playing was more helpful than lecture showed higher level of satisfaction than students who believed lecture was more helpful. But there were no differences in the tutor evaluation score and the written test scores.Participants in the patient management scenario showed higher level of descriptive question scores of the written test and tutor evaluation score than those who participate in the parent management scenario. There were no differences between the role groups.Role-playing may help students to become more interested and participatory in learning behavior management. The level of satisfaction may differ by the design and content of the scenario.

3.Tooth Agenesis and Delay in Patients with Agenesis of Mandibular Second Premolars

Tooth agenesis is a common human dental anomaly and the agenesis of mandibular second premolars has been proven to be the most frequently observed. The aim of this study is to investigate tooth agenesis and delayed tooth development in patients with agenesis of mandibular second premolars.This study reviewed 9 to 15 year-old patients with agenesis of mandibular second premolars who visited the department of pediatric dentistry of Yonsei University Dental Hospital and took panoramic radiographs from January 2014 to December 2016. On panoramic radiographs, agenesis of teeth was observed and developmental delay of teeth was evaluated by the Nolla method. Among 125 patients with agenesis of mandibular second premolars, 58 patients (46.4%) showed agenesis of other teeth and 38 patients (30.4%) showed delayed tooth development. In this study, patients with agenesis of mandibular second premolars were more likely to have tooth agenesis or delayed eruption of other teeth.

4.Patterns of Paediatric Dental Treatment Under General Anaesthesia: A Retrospective Study

ABSTRACT
This retrospective study aimed to evaluate patterns of comprehensive dental treatment under general
anaesthesia (GA) for healthy children in Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia. The treatment
records of healthy paediatric patients who received dental treatment under GA from February 2017
to January 2021 were reviewed. The patients were divided into two groups: (1) less than 6 years old
and (2) 6 to 16 years old. Patients’ characteristics were summarised using descriptive statistics while an
independent t-test was applied to investigate the influence of “age group” on treatment duration, number
of procedures and use of various restorative materials. A total of 125 paediatric patients (67 boys and
58 girls) were included. The patients’ mean age at the time they underwent GA was 5.77 ± 1.94 years
old and the average duration of dental treatment was 62.58 minutes. There was a significant difference
in the duration of treatment between the two age groups (p < 0.05). Tooth extraction was the most
dental procedure performed (63.31%). The 6 to 16 years old group had a significantly shorter treatment
duration (p < 0.05). However, no significant differences were found in all procedures (extraction,
restoration, preventive and pulp therapy) and the utilisation of composite, glass ionomer cement (GIC)
and compomer in both groups. The use of stainless steel crown (SSC) restorations was significantly
higher in the less than six years old group (p < 0.05). Most of the dental procedures performed under GA
on healthy children were extraction procedures. Children less than six years of old had a longer treatment
duration under GA. Composite restorations and SSC were more frequently used in primary dentition.

5.Evaluation of the Beam Quality of Intraoral X-ray Equipments using Intraoral Standard Films.

PURPOSE: This study was to evaluate the beam quality of intraoral X-ray equipments used at Yonsei University Dental Hospital(YUDH) using the half value layer(HVL) and the characteristic curve of intraoral standard X-ray film. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was done using the intraoral X-ray equipments used at each clinical department at YUDH. Aluminum filter was used to determine the HVL. Intraoral standard film was used to get the characteristic curve of each intraoral X-ray equipment. RESULTS: Most of the HVLs of intraoral X-ray equipments were higher than the least recommended thickness, but the REX 601 model used at the operative dentistry department and the X-707 model used at the pediatric dentistry department had HVLs lower than the recommended thickness. The slopes of the characteristic curves of films taken using the PANPAS 601 model and REX 601 model at operative dentistry department, the X-70S model of prosthodontic dentistry department, and the REX 601 model at the student clinic were relatively low. CONCLUSION: HVL and the characteristic curve of X-ray film can be used to evaluate the beam quality of intraoral X-ray equipment. In order to get the best X-ray films with the least radiation exposure to patients and best diagnostic information in clinical dentistry, X-ray equipment should be managed in the planned and organized fashion.

6.Late development of a mandibular second premolar.

In this report, we present the case of a girl with delayed odontogenesis of a lower second premolar for which she was followed up for 8.5 years. Congenital absence of permanent mandibular second premolars was observed at the initial radiographic examination at 8 years and 1 month. One year later, during the treatment period, an unexpected odontogenesis of a right second premolar was diagnosed on follow-up radiography. The original treatment plan was revised and a new plan was successfully implemented. Th is unusual case showed that the orthodontist's clinical philosophy must be flexible because unexpected situations can arise, especially when treating growing patients.

The practice pattern of pediatric dentistry has been changing for the last several decades. This change might be influenced by several factors such as development in dental materials and socioeconomic changes. The purpose of this study was to analyze the changing trends of patient distribution and treatment pattern of pediatric dentistry.Patient distribution and practice trends from 2006 to 2015 at the department of pediatric dentistry of Seoul National University Dental Hospital were reviewed. From 2006 to 2015, the proportion of new patient increased from 12.49% to 20.56%. The average age of new patients decreased. In 2006, restorative treatment had highest percentage, followed by preventive treatment, orthodontic treatment, surgical treatment, and pulp treatment. In 2015, preventive treatment had highest percentage, followed by restorative treatment, orthodontic treatment, surgical treatment and pulp treatment Frequency of general anesthesia increased more than 5 times for last 10 years. The proportion of insurance treatment decreased until 2009, and after 2010 it increased steadily.

8.Alternative Pretreatment Methods for Resin Infiltration in Primary Anterior Teeth

Resin infiltration has been used as a treatment option for the management of early caries lesions recently. However, the etching procedure with hydrochloric acid might be somewhat stressful for the clinicians due to safety problem especially for young children, leading to less utility.This study aims at searching for some alternative surface pretreatment methods of resin infiltration for the early caries lesions in primary anterior teeth by comparing penetration depth of various methods.No significant difference was found in penetration ratio between etched surface with 15% hydrochloric acid and 35% phosphoric acid. However, the penetration ratio was significantly higher in groups pretreated either with dental pumice or abrasive metal strip (p < .05).By the result of this study, etching with phosphoric acid as an alternative of hydrochloric acid was thought clinically acceptable as a pretreatment method for resin infiltration in early caries lesions for primary anterior teeth.It was notable that surface conditioning with dental pumice or metal strip before etching was effective in increasing the penetration. This procedural modification might be much more correspondent with minimally invasive concept and hopefully contribute to increased safety and utility in pediatric dentistry.

9.Post-endodontic Restoration on Erupting Permanent First Molars Using Endocrown with a Polyglass Composite Resin: Report of Two Cases

Post-endodontic restorations are both important and challenging for clinical success in endodontically treated posterior teeth. Several options have been proposed to restore endodontically treated molars.In pediatric dentistry, restoration using conventional single crowns, especially for partially erupted molars with insufficient retentive tooth structure, has proven to be difficult. However, the endocrown presents a conservative and esthetic restorative alternative to conventional crowns with post-and-core, as it acquires additional retention within the pulp chamber. The tooth preparation consists of a circular, equigingival, butt-joint margin and a central retention cavity in the pulp chamber that helps to construct both the crown and core as a single unit.This case report describes the esthetic and conservative endocrown restorations of erupting permanent first molars with extensive coronal destruction.

10.Guideline on caries prevention and clinical practice for children under three years of age.

Caries of children under 3 years old has such characteristics as early onset, multiple tooth involvement and rapid development. It may affect the mastication and digestive functions of the children, as well as oral and systemic development, and may become a risk factor for systemic diseases. In order to standardize the prevention and treatment of the caries of the infants and toddlers, to fully utilize the existing medical resources to prevent caries, to reduce the incidence rate and to increase the treatment rate, and to improve the oral health statuses of the infants and toddlers in China, the Society of Pediatric Dentistry and the Society of Preventive Dentistry of the Chinese Stomatological Association convened experts of pediatric dentistry and preventive dentistry from 19 universities and hospitals to conduct profound discussions on this topic, and finally developed the present guideline on diagnosis, prevention, clinical practice and effect evaluation for caries of children under 3 years old suitable to China's conditions.
