ABSTRACT Anterior crossbites would normally require early intervention, especially when associated with mandibular displacements. The intervention would usually commence in children around the age of eight and nine, where treatment could be a challenge at this age. Therefore, a simple and quick treatment to this malocclusion would be desirable. This case series illustrates two cases of anterior crossbite with a functional shift that were successfully corrected using a simplified fixed technique, which involved a short-span nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) aligning round archwire, composite resin and glass ionomer cement (GIC).

OBJECTIVETo study the boundary between orthodontic and surgical treatment in correction of anterior open bite.

METHODS70 cases (18.0 ages in average) treated orthodontically and 14 cases (25.1 ages in average) treated surgically were chosen. 154 hard and soft tissue measurements were analyzed by statistical software.

CONCLUSIONThe diagnostic index and discriminate function were both useful in determining which method to be chosen in treatment of anterior open bite. The discriminate function was tested to be more efficient than the diagnostic index.

OBJECTIVETo introduce algorithms for effective segmentation of teeth MRI-UTE image.

METHODSTo construct second-segmentation algorithm process based on layer-dependent multi-constrained method. Firstly, a level set method was used to segment the initial boundary from the region determined by user in the reference slice. Secondly, both crown and root of the tooth were segmented by the improved level set method which took the information of the former layer's result as constraint conditions. Finally, the improved level set based on the information of the former and later layer's results was executed for the second time to improve the accuracy of segmentation, in which, the parameter of the overlapping ratio was considered.

RESULTSThe accuracy was 86.98% for the first-segmentation and was increased to 88.35% for the second-segmentation. Compared to the two other methods, the accuracy of the algorithms provided was improved significantly (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONSThe proposed algorithms can effectively achieve the segmentation of teeth MRI-UTE image and has a great improvement on accuracy.

In recent years, the early orthodontic treatment of malocclusion has become a hot issue in the field of orthodontics. Some new phenomena and new problems that have emerged require in-depth analysis and discussion, and need to be given correct guidance and norms. Malocclusion refers to the deformities of teeth, jaws, and craniofacial bones caused by genetic and environmental factors during growth and development. Based on the accurate judgment of the etiology and diagnosis, choosing the right time and suitable indications, with the advantage of growth and development, the most suitable appliance can be selected in the early stage of malocclusion to fix malocclusion, and to effectively prevent and block the formation and development of malocclusion. This article will discuss how to timely and appropriately carry out the early prevention and treatment of malocclusion with six aspects, including methods of performing early orthodontic treatment, the basis and guarantee of early orthodontic treatment, correctly understanding early orthodontic treatment, the issues that should be paid attention to in carrying out early orthodontic treatment, actively advocating multidisciplinary cooperation during early orthodontic treatment and understanding face management in a serious way.
