8.Cellular and Systemic Interactions of Orientia tsutsugamushi with Mammalian Host.

Scrub typhus is an acute febrile illness caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi infection and one of main causes of febrile illness in the Asia-Pacific region. It has been estimated that one billion people are at risk and one million new cases arise each year in the endemic region. Despite of aggressive attempts to develop a prophylactic vaccine against scrub typhus during last several decades, all approaches have failed to generate long lasting immunity. In addition, little is known about the immunological pathogenesis of scrub typhus. In this review, we summarized recent findings of cellular and systemic interaction of O. tsutsugamushi with mammalian host, especially focusing on the molecular basis of intracellular invasion and immunological changes observed during the bacterial infection.

Tsutsugamushi disease is an acute, febrile, typhus-like disease of rural Asia transmitted by the bite of larval trombiculid mites. The disease is caused by infection with Rickettsia tsutsugamushi. Recently the authors experienced a case of tsutsugamushi disease which was serologically confirmed. Here we report a case of tsutsugamushi disease which successfully managed with doxycycline and reviewed literatures on it briefly.

10.Seropositive rate of Orientia tsutsugamushi in Tamias sibiricus from Korea.

Among wild chipmunks, Tamias sibiricus, captured in Kyunggi and Kangwon province in Korea, 1997, seropositivity for Orientia tsutsugamushi was determined. Serological test for Orientia tsutsugamushi infection was performed using indirect immunofluorescent antibody technique (IFA). Of 243 wild chipmunks, 61 against Gilliam strain and 64 against Karp strain of Orientia tsutsugamushi were IFA positive. Seropositivity against Gilliam strain was shown 33.3% in Kyunggi and 23.5% in Kangwon province, and against Karp strain was shown 33.3% and 25.4%, respectively.
