During 1964 to 1967, a survey of 30,534 persons for filariasis was made on all over the country with the following results: Among 24,816 draftees from all over the country in the army recruitment camp 155(0.63 %) were found infected with Brugia malayi. Cheju Do showed the highest microfilaria rate(3.5 %), North Kyongsang Do(1.4 %) the next and South Cholla Do(1.2 %) the third. Blood films from 2,308 inhabitants were examined and 407(17.6 %) showed microfilaria in Cheju Do. 30(3.1 %) out of 974 inhabitants in North Kyongsang Do were found to be infected. The microfilaria rates were 2.0 per cent for 400 inhabitants of Chindo island in South Cholla Do. However, no positive case of microfilaria was found in the inhabitants of Kokumdo among 1,820 persons examined in South Cholla Do and of Namhae island(among 165 persons examined) in South Kyongsang Do. The mean microfilarial density per 20 cu. mm of blood was 52.6 in the inhabitants of Cheju Do, 12.2 in North Kyongsang Do and 27.3 in Chindo island(South Cholla Do). Any distinct relationship between the incidence of positive cases of microfilariae and age or sex of the cases was not observed in Cheju Do. However, in Norh Kyongsang Do and South Cholla Do the microfilaria rate of the male group is higher than the one of the female group of the inhabitants. From the above survey results it turned out that filariasis was found throughout Southern Korea except Kyonggi Do and South Kyongsang Do. A total 30,534 persons examined, 601(2.0 %) were found to be infected by Brugia malayi. Therefore, it seems that there are some endemic foci of malayian filariasis in three main areas such as North Kyongsang Do, South Cholla Do and Cheju Do.

Apert's syndrome is rare autosomal dominant defect characterized by craniosynostosis, midface hypoplasia and symmetrical syndactyly. Multiple surgical procedures will be needed for the child with this syndrome. Especially surgery for craniosynostosis is most often performed between 2 and 6 months of life, a period of physiologic anemia. Perioperative complications can occur from numerous sources-massive blood loss, venous air embolism, cerebral edema, hypothermia and hazardous airway management, thus more monitoring, large bored central venous line and early transfusion are recommended. We report a case of 5 month-old female Apert patient undergoing frontal bone advancement and cranioplasty. At the end of uneventful surgery, we removed endotracheal tube in operating room and permitted early feeding because the procedure was limited above the orbital ridge. As soon as feeding the patient presented cyanosis with generalized seizure. Patient was immediately intubated, sucked out secretions and inhaled with oxygen. Blood gas showed moderate hypoxemia which was improved by oxygen therapy. Suspicious aspiration pneumonia was marked on chest film but disappered I week later. The condition was favorable thereafter and discharged without complication. Keypoints in management of Aperts syndrome are close observation, early detection and preventive treatment of possible complications in perioperative period. (Korean J Anesthesiol 1995; 29: 300~303)

This study was conducted by analyzing all 33 articles based on the LISREL, published from January 1991 to March 1999 in Korea. The analyses consisted of the publication date of articles, principal dependent variables, subjects of the research, adequacy of sampling, adequacy of research purposes and results, accordance between theoretical model and hypothetical model, fit measures, theoretical base of model modification, and adequacy of conclusion. The results were as follows : The thesis of 33 articles in total were outnumbered as 25 (75.8%) to 8 (24.2%) research articles. As for a sex classification of the subjects, 45.5% of the research were conducted around a female group of subjects, while 54.5% were done for both sex, The range of the sample size was 105 to 803, and the average was 259 subjects. A single theoretical variable was measured for each measurement variable, any difference between variables was hardly found in 8 articles (24.2%), and 19 articles (57.6%) did not consider any measurement error. To analyze if the representative has been considered while collecting the data, most data were collected by a convenient sampling. Seven articles (21.2%) were seen with a sign of a representative. Questionnaires were used in a majority (31 articles) of the data collecting process. Only 2 articles (6.1%) were measured with a physiologic index simultaneously. 14 articles (42.2%) were centered on theory development, 10 articles on theory synthesis, and 9 articles on theory test. The research purposes and results were consistent in 25 articles (75.5%) and 8 articles (24.2%) were inconsistent. The quality of life and health promotion behavior were the concepts most frequently studied as a dependent variable, and 7 articles centered on them. In applied theories a health promotion model was used on 4 articles (12.1%), while role theory and stress-coping models were in 3 articles respectively. The articles were analyzed to see if the hypothetical model was elaborated and tested by the theoretical model. Twenty-five articles proved to be rationale for the inconsistencies. Also, 56.5% proposed hypotheses were supported among the subject articles, and 30 articles (90.0%) suggested a revised model. Path coefficient (17 articles) and theoretical adequacy (17 articles) were the standards mostly used. In conclusion, the principal factors were obtained from the research are to be considered as the principes of LISREL application. First, a model has to be established on a theoretical base rather than empirical results dependent on the data. The results are also required to be globally interpreted. Secondly, at least 200 samples are necessary to satisfy the need. Third, more than 3 measurement variables are to be adjusted to a single theoretical variable; the measurement errors must be suggested as well. Finally, normal distribution characteristics of the data and the estimation method need to be reported. Background: Sedentary behavior is associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. We investigated this association of sedentary time and physical activity with increased 10-year CVD risk in Korean adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2014–2017). In total, 14,551 participants aged 30–74 years (6,323 men, 8,228 women) were analyzed. The usual length of sedentary time per day was categorized into three groups (<6, 6–<9, or ≥9 h/d), and physical activity (metabolic equivalents [METs]∙min/wk) was categorized into two groups (low, <600 METs∙min/wk; moderate/high, ≥600 METs∙min/wk). Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the association between sedentary time and increased CVD risk (predicted 10-year risk ≥10%). Adjusted variables were age, sex, body mass index, marital status, employment, household income, alcohol use, family history of CVD, and comorbidity (hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia). Results: The average sedentary time for the 14,551 participants was 7.49 h/d, with an average 10-year CVD risk of 9.58%. There was no significant association between sedentary time and increased 10-year CVD risk in the moderate/ high physical activity group. In the low physical activity group, sedentary time ≥9 h/d had a significant association with increased CVD risk (odds ratio [OR], 1.29; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04–1.62). However, when the sedentary time was <6 h/d, no significant associations were found (OR, 1.17; 95% CI, 0.92–1.49). Conclusion In the low physical activity group, reduction of sedentary time might be important for preventing increased CVD risk.

BACKGROUND: Automated external defibrillator(AED) represent a major breakdown to permit more widespread application of the principle of early defibrillation. Many recent efforts to improve emergency medical services(EMS) and increase survival rates are simply efforts to get defibrillation to patients as rapidly as possible. AED is major innovation for the prehospital care of ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest patients. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the course of initial training to three different groups(nurses, firefighters, and EMT trainee) to use AED. METHOD: We studies the efficacy of education of AED to 33 nurses, 15 EMT trainee, and 16 firefighters. Training lasted 75 mins and included 45 mins an overview of defibrillation, protocols for using the AED, and operation of the AED(Laerdal Heartstart 3000),15 mins demonstraion.4 check list was used to grade the performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, operation of the AED, and the time required to deliver the first three defibrillations. RESULT: There were no statistically significant differences in performance and time required to deliver an electrical countershock among the groups(p=0.4). To the second test 92fo of all group completed all steps successfully. The step most often foiled was the preparing of the AED for defibrillation. CONCLUSION: In nurses, EMT trainee, and firefighters, it is both feasible and effective to train AED use irrespective of the degree of the trainee.

BACKGROUND: In acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the importance of argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNOR) is not established. METHODS: NOR silver staining was carried out in 74 ALL patients. We analyzed the AgNOR parameters ; counting parameters including number of AgNOR per cell, percentage of cells with one cluster, and area parameters including mean AgNOR area, total AgNOR area, and its percentage of nuclear area by morphometry. Cyclin A index was evaluated by immunohistochemical stain. We compared the AgNOR parameters with cyclin A index and evaluated the differences of AgNOR parameters in accordance with FAB classification, immunophenotype, a new classification of ALL (ALL with maturation), and response to induction chemotherapy. RESULTS: A positive correlation was found between cyclin A index and AgNOR area parameters and a significant negative correlation was found between mean AgNOR area and number of AgNOR per cell (r=-0.433, P=0.000). AgNOR area parameters revealed the highest value in L3. The number of AgNOR per cell in T cell ALL was higher than non-T cell ALL (P=0.011), and the percentage of cells with one cluster was lower (P=0.002). The number of AgNOR per cell in ALLm was lower (P=0.004) and the percentage of cells with one cluster was higher than in typical ALL (P=0.002). In cases achieved complete remission (CR) after induction chemotherapy, the number of AgNOR per cell was higher (P=0.005) and the percentage of cells with one cluster was much lower than in cases failed to achieve CR (P=0.013). CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicates that the AgNOR area parameters are helpful to predict the proliferating activity of leukemic blasts in ALL. It is suggested that the number of AgNOR per cell and the percentage of cells with one cluster provide a valuable information to estimate the response to chemotherapy in ALL.
