The Korean Journal of Nutrition 2005;38(6):455-464
The study was designed to observe the correlation between the eating habits and growth development in 1,574 children(3 - 6 years old) in Kyunggi-do and Seoul, Korea. The eating habits and nutrient intake were determined by mini dietary assessment and food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). 35.6% children had been practicing an unbalanced diets. Children with unbalanced diet consumed less amount of protein source foods (meat, fish, egg, soy products), vegetables and fruits and had irregular meal time, but more of them preferred sweet foods (ice creme, cookies) and carbonated drinks as snack compared with children in balanced diet. 24 - 35% children consumed energy, iron (Fe), calcium (Ca), Niacin, Zinc (Zn) less than 75% RDA. Energy intake of children with unbalanced diet was not significantly different from those with balanced diet, but they consumed less amount of niacin, Fe, Ca and Zn than those with balanced diet. By using the relative percentage of standard weight-length-index (WLI), 65.7% children was normal weight, 12.9% was underweight, 13.4% was overweight and 7.9% was obese. However, 11.9% of underweight and normal weight children was so called thin obese since their body fat content was greater than 20%. There were 16.8% underweight in children with unbalanced diet and 12.6% underweight in those with balanced diet. Compared to normal weight, the underweight children significantly consumed less amount of milk and its product, high protein foods, fried foods and fruits, but obese children consumed more high protein source foods (meat, fish, egg, etc) and sweet foods. In conclusion, the eating habits of unbalanced meal was prevalent problem in preschool children which resulting in their health risks. Therefore, it would be needed that new approach for nutrition education to improve eating habits in preschoolers.

Korean Circulation Journal 1994;24(2):307-312
BACKGROUND: The proper management of the patients with hypotention remains a difficult clinical problem. This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of gepefrin in the treament of symptomatic hypotensive patients in outpatient clinic of university hospital. METHODS: Thirty milligrams of Gepefrin was given twice daily for 4 weeks in 30 patients with hypotension(6 males, 24 females ; 23-60 years of age). Blood pressure, heart rate, subjective symptoms and side effects were checked before medication and at the end of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th week of medication. RESULTS: 1) Grpefrin increased sitting systolic blood pressure significantly(p<0.05) by the end of 1st week and thereafter. 2) Hypotensive symptoms were improved in 76% of hypotensive patients and overall rate of usefulness was 70%. 3) Heart rate did not change significantly. 4) One patient complained of loose bowel movement and another one, of anorexia among 30 study patients and all laboratory parameters were within normal limits before and after drug treatment, thus the rate of safety was 93%. CONCLUSION: Results from this study suggests that gepefrin 60mg daily increases the blood pressure mildly and improves the symptoms moderately in symptomatic hypotensive patients.

4.Evaluation of Internet-based Distance Learning In Nursing Education.
Journal of Korean Society of Medical Informatics 2001;7(3):39-46
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Internet-based distance learning offered to graduate nursing students. Eleven on-line qualitative research methodology classes were delivered via ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) along with three off-line classes to doctoral nursing students. The main components of on-line classes were the electronic blackboard and the on-line discussion board. To examine the effect of distance learning, questionnaires, containing achievement questions and perceptions on on-line classes, were administered to students after one month from initial class and after completing the whole course. The results of the course evaluation survey were analyzed and compared with traditional classroom method. The results indicated that students' knowledge on qualitative research methodology was significantly improved. Students were satisfied with the feedback from instructor and the content of the electronic board. However, traditional classroom method rated higher than distance learning. The amount of assignments, the quality and quantity of discussion, lack of clarification of the course contents, and lack of clear evaluation criteria were the main reasons for the students' dissatisfaction on distance learning. Implications for course improvement include creativity in the course development and active communication with students.

Journal of Korean Academy of Adult Nursing 2003;15(3):383-392
PURPOSE: The purpose of this descriptive study was to gain basic data to develop a self-care protocol for the lymphedema patients. METHOD: The subjects of this study consisted of 115 patients with lymphedema from 8 hospitals and two community health and welfare centers in Busan and Seoul. The data was collected with questionnaire by self reporting of patients between March 2001 and December 2001. Data was analyzed by mean and percentage. RESULT: For self-care activities in daily life, compliance of 'use skin care preparations', 'use heat and cold', 'protect from local compression on affected limbs', 'protect from insect biting', 'use aids to protect affected limbs', 'take diuretics and take protein diet' did not reach to 50%. For self-care activities related to complex physical therapy, 28.7% of subjects complied with compression garment, 14.8% with manual lymph drainage, and 13.0% with exercise. 20.0% of subjects tried to treat with acupuncture and 13.9% with heat therapy. CONCLUSION: From this study, it is suggested that patients need to get a self-care education with correct information about self care activities and health care professionals need to develop more convenience self-care techniques of massage and exercise.

Journal of Korean Academy of Adult Nursing 2003;15(2):316-326
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was the development of a comprehensive nursing intervention program for the client with acute lymph stasis and stage I lymphedema. METHOD: The Quasi-experimental design using a non-equivalent control group was used. The subjects were 22 stroke patients with lymph stasis in the control group and 23 patients in the experimental group. The complex physical therapy of Casley-Smith was carried out to the control group for 10 hours, and comprehensive nursing intervention for the experimental group was carried out for 60 minutes. The data for this study was gathered from Feb. 2002 until June 2002 and pertains knowledge about lymphedema, self-care for managing lymphedema, and circumferences of affected limbs. Data was analyzed by mean, standard deviation, x2-test, and t-test. RESULT: The changes in knowledge about lymphedema, self-care practices, and circumference of affected limbs after nursing intervention did not show significant differences between control group and experiment group. CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that comprehensive nursing intervention had more efficiency than complex physical therapy in the treatment of edema for stroke patients because of it's simplicity and time saving. Thereby, the comprehensive nursing intervention program developed in this study would be a useful therapy for the clients with lymph stasis and early stage lymphedema.

Journal of Korean Academy of Fundamental Nursing 2004;11(2):148-155
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the level of knowledge and learning needs of patients with a permanent pacemaker implantation. METHODS: The participants were 86 patients with a permanent pacemaker implantation. Data were collected during April and May 2002 using a questionnaire survey on knowledge and level of learning need. The collected data were analyzed using the SAS program. RESULTS: 1. The average knowledge score was 13.21. The knowledge level was significantly higher in participants under 50 years of age and for those with higher levels of education. The items with the highest knowledge score was "permanent pacemaker needs regular check ups" and the lowest, "a bath can be taken 1 month after stitches are removed". 2. The total average score for learning needs was 60.78 and the mean item score was 3.04 as measured on a 4-point Likert scale. The item showing the highest learning need was "electrical fields can affect the pacemaker's function" and the lowest learning need was for "sexual activity after permanent pacemaker implantation". CONCLUSION: According to the above findings, it can be concluded that an intensive nursing education program should be developed for patients with a permanent pacemaker especially for those patients over 50 years of age and those with lower levels of education.

Nutrition Research and Practice 2013;7(1):22-25
This study was performed in order to investigate the effects of taurine on cadmium poisoning in muscle, gill, and bone tissues of wild goldfish. For this experiment, 80 wild goldfish were divided into four experimental groups: 0.3 mg/L of cadmium and 0 mg/L of taurine (Group I), 0.3 mg/L of cadmium and 20 mg/kg of taurine (Group II), 0.3 mg/L of cadmium and 40 mg/L of taurine (Group III), and 0.3 mg/L of cadmium and 80 mg/L of taurine (Group IV). The results were as follows: The cadmium concentration in muscle tissue of wild goldfish was 0.65-3.21 mg/kg wet wt in Group I, whereas it decreased in Group IV. Levels of cadmium in gill tissue of wild goldfish were 16.57-42.39 mg/kg wet wt in Group I, 15.23-43.01 mg/kg wet wt in Group II, 15.11-39.56 mg/kg wet wt in Group III, and 13.15-38.55 mg/kg wet wt in Group IV (P < 0.05), suggesting that the cadmium concentration decreased in the experimental groups compared to control. The cadmium concentration in bone tissue of wild goldfish after 28 days was 0.52-9.75 mg/kg in Group II, whereas it increased in Group III (P < 0.05). In conclusion, taurine may have a preventive effect against cadmium accumulation in biological tissues.
