A Cerebrovascular accident(CVA), or Stroke is a medical emergency that occurred when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted or blocked. The stroke causes physical function disorder due to hemiparalysis and emotional disorder. Also the stroke patients experience helplessness, powerlessness, sense of alienation and loss of hope. These feelings make the rehabilitation difficult because they lose the will of life. The purpose of this study is to identify the correlation between perceived social support and hope of stroke survivors. The subjects for this study were 100 out-patients with stroke in one general hospital and oriental medicine hospital located in Mokpo. The data were analysed by frequency, t-test, ANOVA. Duncan test, Pearson's correlation, using the SPSS WIN 9.0 program. Data were collected from July 11 to September 9, 2000, using a structured questionnaire. The instruments used for this study: The social support scale developed by Park, Ji-won(1985) and the hope scale developed by Miller(1988). The results were as follows. 1. It was found that the higher the degree of perceived social support, the higher the degree of hope(r= .726, p= .000). Therefore hypothesis was supported. 2. The mean score of perceived social support was n.8(SD=21.0) with a score range from 27.0 to 104.0. 3. The mean score of perceived hope was 117.0(SD=25.7) with a score range from 57.0 to 160.0. 4. The level of social support depending on general characteristics were significantly different in variables such as marital status(t=3.131. p= .010), degree of income satisfaction(F= 16.027, p= ,000). 5. The level of hope depending on general characteristics were significantly different in variables such as marital status(t=2.681. p= .040), current job(t=-2.055, p= .043) degree of income, satisfaction(F=11.363, p= .000). For these subjects, there was a significant relationship between social support and hope. The stroke survivors need social support to inspire their hope. Nurses should plan interventions to enhance social support for patients with stroke. The above results may be used as the basic data to seek more efficient way of elevating nursing practice and rehabilitation for the patients with stroke.

The study was undertaken to evaluate the alteration of thermal enhancement ratio as a function of timeintervals between two split dose hyperthermias followed by irradiation. For the experiments, 330 mice were dividedinto 3 groups; the first, 72 mice were used to evaluate the heat reaction by single dose hyperthermia and heatresistance by split dose hyperthermia, the second, 36 mice were used to evaluate the radiation reaction byirradiation only, and the third, 222 mice were used for TER observation by comibination of single dosehyperthermia and irradiation , and TER alteration by combination of split dose hyperthermia and irradiation. Foreach group the skin reaction score of mouse tail was used for observation and evaluation of the results of heatand irradiation. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. The heating time resulting 50% necrosis(ND 50)was 101 minutes in 43degrees centigrade and 24 minutes in 45degrees centigrade hyperthermia, which indicated thatthere is reciprocal proportion between temperature and heating time. 2. Development of heat resistance wasobserved by split dose hyperthermia. 3. The degree of skin reaction by irradiation only was increasedporportionally as a function of radiation dose, and calculated radiation dose corresponding to skin score 1.5(D1.5) was 4,137 rads. 4. Obtained thermal enhancement ratio by combination of single dose hyperthermia andirradiation was increased proportionally as a function of heating time. 5. Thermal enhancement ratio was decreasedby combination of split dose hyperthermia and irradiation , which was less intense and lasted longer thandevelopment of heat resistance. In summary, these studies indicate that the alteration of thermal enhancementratio has influence on heat resistance by split dose hyperthermia and irradiation.

Chest CT scans of 70 patents with malignant lymphoma were reviewed to evaluate the thoacic manifestation of malignant lymphoma. Sixteen patients had Hodgkin's disease and 54 patients had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The thoracic involvement of malignant lymphoma was observed i 47 patients (67.1%) and 11 of these patients had Hodgkin's disease, and 36 had non-Hodgkin's lympoma. The most common finding was mediastinal lymphadenopathy and the most frequently involved sites were anterior mediastinal and paratracheal lymph nodes. Pulmonary parenchymal involvement was seen in 11 patients (15.7%), and CT scan showed thickening of bronchovascular bundle, parenchymal consolidation and nodules. Pleural effusion was seen in 18 patients (25.7%), however, without any evidence of parietal pleural thickening in all cases. Involvement of chest wall and breast was seen in two patient(2.9%). The data obtained through the current study showed no differences from those of previous reports, except the fact that there was no CT evidence of pleural thickening in patients who had pleural effusion.

PURPOSE: This study was to examine the effect of postpartum exercise on mental health. Mental health comprises a 9 symptom dimension of Somatization, Obsessive-Compulsive, Interpersonal Sensitivity, Depression, Anxiety, Hostility, Phobic anxiety, Paranoid Ideation, and Psychoticism. METHOD: A non-equivalent pre-test, post-test control group study was conducted. Fifty-two puerperal women who were admitted to a postpartum ward of a mother-baby clinic in Pusan were recruited; 26 women were assigned to the experimental group and 26 women to the control group. Postpartum exercise was applied to the experimental group from postpartum day 3 for a period of 8 weeks while no exercise program was applied to the control group. Mental health with SCL-90-R was measured before and after exercise. Data was analyzed using mean, x2-test, t-test, and ANOVA by SPSS 10.0. RESULT: The mental health status in the exercise group did not show a statistically significant decrease when compared to that of the control group. CONCLUSION: There is no effect of postpartum exercise on women's mental health during the first 8 weeks of the postpartum period. Further studies are needed for randomized clinical trials with a larger sample size.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe how the rural elderly cope with experiences in multiple chronic diseases. METHOD: Data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interview using ethnography. The participants were 9 women and 2 men who aged over 65, were living in rural community, and had experienced two or more chronic diseases. RESULTS: According to the results of this study, those who had experienced multiple chronic diseases went through the stages of 'recognizing of revealed symptoms', 'discovering of disease', 'overcoming', 'neglecting', 'discovering another disease', 'being frustrated' and 'living with suffering'. CONCLUSION: The results of this study are expected to be utilized as basic materials to develop a nursing intervention program for effective management of chronic diseases.

This study investigated the relationship between the nurse's followership, job satisfaction and organizational commitment. The sample consisted of 173 nurses of 2 private university hospitals. The instruments used in this study were the followership scale (Kelly, 1994), the job satisfaction scale (Slavitts et al., 1978), the organizational commitment questionnaire (Mowday et al., 1979) and the demographic questionnaire. SPSS/WIN program was used for descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis of data. The results were as follows: 1) The styles of followership were classified as pragmatist followers (73.4%), exemplary followers (19.7%), passive followers (4.6%), and alienated followers (2.3%). 2) The mean of independent/ critical thinking was 3.32 (M=3.0), and active involvement was 3.04 (M=3.0). As a whole, the mean of followership was 3.18 (M=3.0), job satisfaction was 2.82 (M=2.5), and organizational commitment was 3.97 (M=3.5). 3) Significant differences were found in the degree of clinical nurses' perception of followership according to the demographic characteristics such as age, education, position, and career. 4) Significant differences were found in the degree of clinical nurses' perception of followership according to followership styles. 5) The followership was significantly related to job satisfaction and organizational commitment. In conclusion, the nurse's followership is considered as an important concept and this suggested that the concept could be used as a major variable in measuring effectiveness of nursing organization.

This study was carried out to observe the ultrastructure of tongue mast cells in frog, Bombina orientalis. In the light microscopy, mast cells were round, oval, spindle-like and irregular shape and occasionally had one or more tail-like long cytoplasmic processes. Mast cells had many red granules stained with toluidine blue in the cytoplasm. In the electron microscopy, mast cells had membrane-bounded granules and poorly developed organelles. The granules were composed of two parts, low and dense electron density. In high magnification the dense part in the middle region of granule had honey comb-like crystalline structure.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the need for advanced practice nurse and explain the relationship between self-efficacy and professional self-concept among Korean nurses. METHOD: The participants were 511 Korean nurses who were recruited in hospitals or public health centers in Korea. The instruments used in this study were Sherer et al's self-efficacy instrument, Arthur's professional self-concept instrument, and a structured questionnaire on the need for advanced nurse practitioners. Cronbach alpha, mean, SD, X2, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data using SPSS PC+ ver 12.0 for Windows. RESULTS: Of the nurses, 57.9% of wanted to be advanced practice nurses. The mean of professional self-concept and self-efficacy scores for the nurses were at the medium level. Professional self-concept and self-efficacy of nurses showed significant differences according to age, working location, marital status, level of education, and length of clinical experience. A significant positive correlation was found between professional self-concept and self-efficacy. CONCLUSION: Before planning to develop the role of Advanced practice nurse, there is a need to measure self-efficacy and professional self-concept among nurses. Politically, strategies to increase self-efficacy and professional self-concept among Korean nurses will be necessary in order to prepare good advanced practice nurse.

Darier's diseaae is relatively rare dyskeratotic and inheritable dermatoses of an. autosomal irregular dominant gene. The authors observed one case of typical Dariers disease with the family hietory of three generatian of autoaomal daminant trait. 22 year-oid patient we observed has had the generalized pruritus and dark dirty and warty patehes distribnted almost on the whole skin surface especially on trunk, back and face for about 10 years. Histopathologically, the lesion showed lacunae, corps ronds and grains which are compatible with typical Dariers disease.
