Interleukin-6(IL-6) is a multifunctional cytokine, and deregulated IL-6 gene expression has been implicated as being involved in the pathogenesis of a number of diseaaes. So we measured the serum level of IL-6 to find a relationahip between uterine cervical cancer and serum IL-6 level. The serum levels of IL-6 were meesured m 54 patients adrnitted to the Severance hospital, from August, 1992 to February, 1993, of whom 27 patients were diagnosed as invasive cancer of cervix, 17 as CIN, and also utilizing 10 patiente diagnosed as uterine myoma as a control group for matched age and parity. The average serum level of IL-6 in invasive cancer, CIN, and uterine myoma were respectively 30.33pg/ml, 37.27pg/ml, and 12.45pg Jml. In 22% af cervical cancer patients (6 of 27), and 27% of CIN patients (4 of 17) studied blood levels of II-6 were detected whereas only 10% of uterine myoma (1 of 10) shorved the same result. However, the difference does not seem to be statistically significant, There was no statistically significant difference among any of the groups, and age and stage did not show any significant cmrelation, and the results need furt, ber investigations.

OBJECTIVE: To obtain clinically useful data regarding prenatal diagnosis, proper antepartum counseling and obstetric management in pregnancies with fetal dysplastic kidney disease. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 13 cases of MCDK(Multicystic dysplastic kidney) and PCDK(Polycystic dysplastic kidney), diagnosed by antenatal ultrasound and delivered from June 1994 through July 1999 at Ajou University School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, with regard to prenatal ultrasonographic findings, perinatal outcomes, maternal complications and associated fetal anomalies. RESULTS: The incidence of MCDK and PCDK was one in 1,066 and one in 2,398 births, respectively. Of the 9 cases of MCDK, one case was terminated due to severely associated anomaly, and 6 cases were delivered by spontaneous labor or pitocin induction at term, of which 1 case was delivered by pitocin induction at 36 weeks gestation due to intrauterine fetal death. Two cases were delivered by cesarean section. There were no neonatal deaths in 7 cases of MCDK and they have been followed up to date, and alive. Of the 4 cases of PCDK, 3 cases were terminated by induced abortion or induced vaginal delivery, and 1 case was delivered by cesarean section, which was combined with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and the baby died within 24 hours after birth. Perinatal complications consisted of small for gestational age, urinary tract infection, hydronephrosis, acute respiratory failure, acute renal failure, periventricular hemorrhage and laryngomalacia in the neonatal period. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that antenatal ultrasonography and genetic analysis to evaluate accurate diagnosis and associated anomalies should be performed to manage and councel properly the pregnancies with fetal dysplastic kidney disease.

Journal of Korean Society of Pediatric Endocrinology 2005;10(2):204-210
PURPOSE: The prevalence and severity of childhood obesity are increasing rapidly worldwide. Spontaneous and stimulated growth hormone (GH) secretion are impaired in obesity. However, despite the low GH levels, normal or increased insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) levels have been observed in obese subjects. Growth velocity is commonly normal or increased in obese children. As for the possible mechanisms underlying these observations, overnutrition, chronic hyperinsulinemia and increased free IGF-I have been suggested. To explain the possible mechanisms by which obese children are taller than normal weight children, we have compared height, leptin, insulin, IGF-I and IGF binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) with body mass index and studied the relationship among these parameters in obese and control group. METHODS: Auxological and endocrine evaluation were performed in 33 obese children (18 boys and 15 girls) and 47 non-obese children (24 boys and 23 girls) at Hanyang University Hospital from Jan. 1999 to Dec. 2000. Obesity was defined as a body mass index (BMI) greater than the 95th percentile for age and sex. Fasing blood samples were taken for the measurement of serum leptin, insulin, IGF-I and IGFBP-3 by radioimmunoassay. RESULTS: The serum concentrations of leptin, insulin, IGF-I and IGFBP-3 were significantly higher in obese children than those in non-obese children. The serum concentrations of leptin (r=0.751, P=0.000), insulin (r=0.746, P=0.000) and IGF-I (SDS) (r=0.747, P=0.000) showed positive correlation to BMI. And the serum concentrations of IGFBP-3 showed positive correlation to BMI with low correlation coefficient respectively (r=0.275, P=0.015). The serum concentration of insulin correlated to that of IGF-I (SDS) positively (r=0.585, P=0.000). CONCLUSION: This study suggest that increased sensitivity of GHR modulated by chronic hyperinsulinemia and increased circulating IGF-I produced by accumulated adipose tissue may enhance the growth in obese children.

Korean Circulation Journal 1992;22(1):67-76
BACKGROUND: Evaluating the segmental wall motion of left ventricle is important in patients with myocardial infarction for choosing therapeutic modality and predicting prognosis. Radionuclide Multigated Angiography(MUGA) is a reliable noninvasive method for the evaluation of left ventricular performance. Methods : MUGA scan(LV ejection fraction, phase image histogram, regional wall motion) was performed and analyzed in 45 patients with myocardial infarction(31 : acute MI, 14: old MI) and 13 normal controls. RESULTS: 1) The LVEF of acute and old MI group was significantly reduced and the SDph of acute and old MI group was significantly increased as compared with that of control group(p<0.05). 2) In acute MI group, the LVEF of group without, IV Urokinase was more reduced than that of group with IV Urokinase and the SDph of group without IV Urokinase was more increased than that of group with IV Urokinase(p<0.05). As a result of wall motion scoring, the linear correlation exists between SDPh and sum of wall motion scoring(r=0.62, p<0.01). 3) In MI group, the LVEF of anterior wall MI was more reduced than that of inferior wall MI and the SDPh of anterior wall MI was more increased than that of inferior wall MI(p<0.05). 4) In acute anterior wall MI, the reverse correlation exists between LVEF and SDPh and the linear correlation exists between sum of wall motion scoring and SDPh(r=-0.73, 0.72, p<0.01). But there are no statistical significances of correlation between them in acute inferior MI(r=-0.44, 0.42, p>0.05), in old anterior MI(r=-0.65, 0.47, p>0.05) and in old inferior MI(r=-0.47, 0.46, P>0.05). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that Phase angle(SDPh) is thought to be valuable index to evaluate left ventricular function with application of other indeces in Myocardial infarction. Left ventricular function measured by SDph in acute or anterior MI is lower than old or inferior MI.

Endocrinology and Metabolism 2015;30(1):98-104
BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) encompasses a range of disorders that are characterized by social and communication deficits and repetitive behaviors. This study evaluated the effect of methyl-6-(phenylethynyl)-pyridine (MPEP), an antagonist of the mGluR5 metabotropic glutamate receptor, on memory enhancement in the BTBR T+tf/J (BTBR) mouse strain, which has been recognized as a model of ASD. METHODS: The pharmacological effects of MPEP on memory and motor coordination were assessed using the Morris water maze and rotarod tests in BTBR and C57BL/6J (B6) mice. Furthermore, we performed morphological analyses of cerebellar foliation in BTBR and B6 mice using hematoxylin and eosin staining. RESULTS: MPEP-treated BTBR mice exhibited improved learning and memory in the Morris water maze test. MPEP administration also improved motor coordination in the rotarod test. However, no significant difference was observed regarding the numbers of Purkinje cells in the cerebella of BTBR versus normal B6 mice. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that the mGluR5 antagonist MPEP has the potential to ameliorate learning and memory dysfunction and impaired motor coordination in BTBR mice. These results further suggest that the BTBR mouse model may be useful in pharmacological studies investigating drugs that could potentially alleviate cognitive dysfunction in ASD.

Glutathione S-Tanaferase (GST) is tripeptide, which plays a central role in the detoxification of electrophilic xenobioticas, including cytotoxic drugs and carcinogens, by conjugation with redueed glutathione. There are four major claases af human GST : pi, alpha, mu and rnicrosomal, They are propoaed as a marker for human and experimental neoplasia iincluding liver, kidney, lung, colon, uterine cervix, etc. Expression of pi, alphn, mu form of GST in control (15 cases), CIN (14 cases), invasive carcinoma (28 cases) of human uterine cervix was investigated immunohistochemically. They were selected fram September, 1992, to,June, 1992, in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Yonsei university College of medicine. In nucleus, the expresaion of GST pi was increased statistically significant in case of CIN and invasive Ca. of Cx. compared to control(p=0.018, p=0.002). But expression of GST alpha, mu has no significant difference in each case. In cytoplasms, the expvession of GST pi was increased statistically significani, in case of CIN and invasive Ca. of Cx. (p=0.001, p<0.001). But expreasion of GST alpha, mu has no significant differenrce in each case. There was no statistically significant diHerence in expression of GST isoenzymes oC each nucleua and cytoplasm according to stage and cell type in Ca. oC Cx. The further evaluation of survival and expression of GST pi in Ca. of Cx. in order to establish new prognostic factor in Ca. of Cx.
