Pedunculated lipofibroma is a rare disorder characterized by ectopic deposits of mature adipose tissue in the dermis. It is a dorne shaped or sessile papule which occurs at any site and develops later in life. We, herein, report two cases of pedunculated lipofibroma which have developed on the chin of a 64-year-old man and the buttock of a 47-year-old woman.

This study was designed to investigate dental arch shapes buccally and lingually at Bracket Level of Koreans. This involved studying 63 inviduals (37 males, 26 females) with normal occlusion ranging in age from 17 to 24 years old. The landmarks were digitized and measurements and statistical analysis were performed by NEC 9801 V-M computer. The Results were as Follows: Bicanine width, Bipremolar width and Bimolar width were larger in males than in females. Buccal and lingual arch form and coordination form were obtained by NEC 9801 V-M computer. The parabolic equations which represents buccal and lingual arch form were obtained.

5.The Effect of Ascorbic acid on Endotoxin-induced Fibrosis.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1996;37(10):1663-1669
Ascorbic acid, which is toxic to retinal pigment epithelial cells in vitro, can stimulate fibrotic tissue formation. This study investigated the influence of ascorbic acid on endotoxin-induced fibrosis. Experimental vitreal fibrosis was induced in the rabbit by injecting endotoxin with or without ascorbic acid into the vitreous, and compared the degree of fibrosis. Inflammation induced by 1 microgram of endotoxin first appeared on day 1, remained on day 3. On day 7, organized membrane was developed. The striking decrease in ascorbic acid occurred after the intravitreal injection of endotoxin. In a series of experiment in which ascorbic acid were used, endotoxin produced less inflammatory response compared to the control. Rabbits which were injected 1 microgram of endotoxin (with or without ascorbic acid) had shown significant vitreal fibrosis. Even though the high conentration of ascorbic acid can provide extacellular protection for the ocular tissues during ocular inflammation, It was not effective in preventing the formation of membrane.

Journal of the Korean Neurological Association 1996;14(2):531-537
Thoracic radiculopathy (TR) is one of various neurologic complications of diabetes mellitus (DM), which can cause pain and motor weakness of chest or abdomen. Electromyographic study is well known to be useful for accurate diagnosis of TR. This study is conducted in order to answer following questions: To what extent does paraspinal EMG study show denervation potentials in neurologically asymptomatic DM patients? ; Is there any correlation between EMG abnormality and severity of diabetes mellitus? We performed thorough neurologic examination and review of medical records in 74 DM patients who were referred for neurologic evaluation and rountine nerve conduction studies. Among those patients, 16 were selected for EMG on lower thoracic paraspinal muscles, who had no clinical symptoms of thoracic radiculopathy and no evidence of peripheral neuropathy on routine nerve conduction studies. The EMG findings were evaluated with relation to serum fructosamine level and duration of DM. On EMG examination, ten of sixteen patients exhibited positive sharp wave in lower thoracic paraspinal muscle. Nine of those ten patients with denervation potential in thoracic paraspinal muscle showed high fructosamine level and eight had been exposed to DM for more than 5 years. It is suggested that subclinical diabetic thoracic radiculopathy is more frequent than expected arid that there is positive correlation between abnormal paraspinal EMG findings and the level of fructosamine and duration of DM. And it is also suggested that there could be selective involvement of posterior primary ramus in diabetic patients, although it needs further studies to be confirmed.

7.The Effect of Vitreous on Proliferation of Retinal Pigment Epithelial CelIs.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1993;34(4):299-303
Several studies have indicated that retinal pigment epithelial(RPE) cells migrate from their normal location into the vitreous cavity where they then undergo proliferation and membrane formation in proliferative vitreoretinopathy(PVR). Little attention has been given to the role of vitreous on cellular proliferation. Our study is to determine the effect of vitreous on RPE cell proliferation and to examine the morphology of cultured RPE cells on vitreous explants. The vitreous from pigmented rabbit was extracted and added to the cultured media RPE cells proliferated rapidly along the margin of the vitreous as fibrocyte like cells and were less invasive into the virtrous gel. Liquified vitreous with media stimulated the proliferation of RPE cells, but vitreous alone showed the decrease of inoculated RPE cells.

PURPOSE: Neuroendocrine (NE) cells of the prostate are considered to be involved in the pathogenesis of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). By a comparative analysis of NE cell density in BPH tissue of men who were either exposed to or not exposed to 5alpha-reductase inhibitor, we investigated the relationship between NE cells and BPH, and the effect of androgen deprivation on NE cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prostate tissue specimens, obtained from 30 men by transurethral resection of the prostate or radical cystoprostatectomy, were used. Of the 30 patients, 10 had a prostate smaller than 25 ml (normal control), the other 20 had a prostate larger than 40ml, 10 of who had taken 5alpha-reductase inhibitor (finasteride) for 3 months before surgery (androgen blockade group), and 10 who had not (BPH group). The distribution of NE cells in the prostate was examined using the anti-chromogranin A (CgA) antibody, and the density of the CgA-positive cells was compared by an optical dissector method. Immunoblotting was performed using the neuron specific enolase (NSE) antibody. A Mann-Whitney U test was used in a statistical analysis. RESULTS: Most of the CgA-positive NE cells were localized between the acinar epithelial cells. The mean numbers of CgA-positive NE cells per acinus in the normal controls and the BPH groups were 1.67+/-0.78 and 4.45+/-2.54, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). However, the mean number of CgA-positive NE cells in the androgen blockade group, was 4.93+/-2.17, which was similar to the BPH group. In a NSE immunoblotting study, a distinct band was observed in the BPH and androgen blockade groups, but the density of the band was higher in the androgen blockade group. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that NE cells may be involved in the hyperplastic process of BPH. Inhibition of dihydrotestosterone, caused by the oral administration of the 5alpha-reductase inhibitor, failed to induce any significant change in the NE cells, probably due to the incomplete androgen blockade.

10.The Effect of Intraocular Hypothermia on RPE Cell Proliferation.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1995;36(9):1498-1502
The effects of intraocular hypothermia on experimental proliferative vitreoretinopathy in rabbits were studied. Vitrectomy was performed for 30 minutes with irrigating balanced salt solution in rabbit eyes, and the cultured retinal pigment epithelial cells were injected into the vitreous cavity. The irrigating balanced salt solution was used at room temperature in control eyes, and was cooled to 6 degrees C in experimental eyes. Experimental eyes showed less postoperative inflammation and demonstrated less occurrence of tractional retinal detachment compared with the control eyes. In vitro, the growth of cultured human retinal pigment epithelial ceDs was studied in the conditions of different temperatures. Significant suppression of cell growth was noted at 43 degrees C and also at 4 degrees C. The cooled irrigating solution may be used during vitrectomy procedure to decrease the occurrence of proliferative vitreoretinopathy.
