The open Broström procedure is considered the surgery of choice for treating chronic lateral ankle instability. The role of arthroscopy has gained popularity in the surgical treatment of chronic lateral ankle instability, partly for the ability to manage the intra-articular pathology combined with ankle instability. Arthroscopic techniques can be divided broadly into the arthroscopic-assisted Broström technique and arthroscopic all-inside ligament repair. The clinical results of these arthroscopic techniques are similar to open procedures. The arthroscopic technique may be an excellent alternative to the open Broström procedure in treating chronic lateral ankle instability when applying the appropriate indications.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of sodium hyaluronate-sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (HA-CMC), an anti-adhesive material for spinal surgery, on bone fusion by applying it to rat spinal models after lumbar posterolateral fusion. METHODS: Lumbar posterolateral fusion was performed at L4-5 using bone graft substitutes in 30 rats. HA-CMC was injected in 15 rats at a dose of 0.2 cc (HA-CMC group) and a saline solution of 0.2 cc in the other 15 rats (control group). Simple radiographs were taken until postoperative 9 weeks with an interval of one week. At postoperative 4 and 9 weeks, three dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) scanning was performed to observe the process of bone fusion. At 9 weeks, bone fusion was confirmed by gross examination and manual palpation. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences in bone fusion between the two groups. 3D CT scanning did not reveal significant differences between the groups. The gross examination and manual palpation after autopsy performed at 9 weeks confirmed bone union in 93.3% of both groups. CONCLUSION: The anti-adhesive material used for spinal surgery did not have adverse effects on spinal fusion in rats.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Eating out has been reported to have negative effects on nutritional status. However, eating out can include meals prepared at home and eaten outside. Conversely, meals eaten at home can be brought from outside, as take-out and home deliveries have become common in Korea. Thus, we tested whether or not meal preparation location influences daily diet quality. SUBJECTS/METHODS: From the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2007-2009, 4,915 Korean adults (20-64 years) were classified into two groups: home-made meal group (HMG), who ate ≥ 2 meals per day prepared at home (n = 4,146), and non-home-made meal group (NHMG), who ate ≥ 2 meals per day prepared outside home (n = 769). Daily diet quality was determined by energy intake, nutrient intake, Dietary Variety Score (DVS), and Diet Diversity Score (DDS). RESULTS: Compared to the HMG, the NHMG was more likely to consist of men, single, employed, educated and of a higher economic status (all, P < 0.01). The NHMG showed higher energy intakes (1,776 vs. 2,116 kcal/day) with higher percentages of energy from protein (15 vs. 23%) and fat (14 vs. 16%) and lower intakes of dietary fiber, phosphorus, potassium, niacin, and vitamin C (all, P < 0.01) than the HMG, with some variations among age groups. The NHMG tended to consume foods prepared by frying and grilling and had more one-dish meals such as bibimbap, noodles, and dumplings but also showed higher dietary diversity. CONCLUSIONS: It should be noted that home-made meals do not necessarily guarantee a healthy diet, and the effects of meal preparation location on nutritional status might vary depending on socio-demographic characteristics.

Trisomy 12p is an extremely rare disorder, in fact approximately 30 cases have been reported around the world. This disorder results from a malsegregation or non-disjunction of a balanced translocation of t(12;18), thus the offspring inherit such a gene. In this report, the father's chromosomal arrangement was 46, XY, t(12;18)(p12.1;p11.31) and the mother had a normal chromosomal arrangement. We identified a neonate with a short- neck, round face, prominent forehead, long philtrum, low-set ears, imperforated anus and congenital megacolon. We then carried out a chromosomal study and diagnosed the trisomy 12p. If one or both parents are known carriers, it is strongly suggested to perform amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling for every pregnancy and it is also recommended that potential parents receive genetic counseling before any pregnancy.

PURPOSE: To compare contrast sensitivity and color vision after implantation of a clear intraocular lens (IOL) and a yellow-tinted IOL in diabetic retinopathy patients. METHODS: In the 50 eyes of 25 diabetic patients with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy, clear IOLs were implanted in 25 eyes, and yellow-tinted IOLs were implanted in 25 fellow eyes. Three months after the surgery, contrast sensitivity function was measured with a vision contrast test system, and color discrimination was tested using the Farnsworth Munsell 100-hue test. RESULTS: Eyes implanted with yellow-tinted IOLs had significant differences in contrast sensitivity values compared to those of fellow eyes implanted with clear IOLs in both the moderate diabetic retinopathy group (6.0 cycles per degree) and the severe diabetic retinopathy group (throughout all spatial frequencies except 12.0 cycles per degree). The yellow-tinted IOL did not modify chromatic discrimination compared with that of the clear IOL. In the blue-yellow axis error score, however, there were significant differences between the clear IOL and the yellow-tinted IOL. CONCLUSIONS: With progressing diabetic retinopathy, the yellow-tinted IOL provided better contrast sensitivity than the clear IOL. The yellow-tinted IOL improved color vision in the blue-yellow chromatic axis without causing chromatic discrimination defects.
