1.The Mental Workload And Alertness Levels Of Train Drivers Under Simulated Conditions Based On Electroencephalogram Signals

It was suggested by most researchers that train drivers’ workload and alertness levels attribute to train accidents. The main objective of this study is to determine the significant patterns of mental workload and alertness levels of train drivers with respect to the conditions. The data are collected from simulation experiments on 15 professional train drivers. The simulation experiments are performed under three driving conditions (i.e. daytime, rainy daytime and rainy night) using a train driving simulator set. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are collected from six significant points on the body of the subjects. It is found that the mental workload of the train drivers tends to be high during rainy night driving condition and sleepiness occurs which is indicative of low vigilance. The beta amplitude increases under rainy night driving condition which may be attributed to viewing difficulties while driving in the dark. The results reveal that there is a significant different between each session (p = 0.042) especially with the pattern for rainy night driving. It is also observed that there is lower mental workload among the train drivers, which indicates that the train drivers are detached from their work.
2.Socio-demographic and socio-economic determinants of adults’ knowledge on fungal and aflatoxin contamination in the diets

Objective: The occurrence of food contaminants such as aflatoxin in the foodstuffs has been reported widely. Unfortunately, only a few know about the impact of aflatoxin to human health and this phenomenon let us to question the extent of public’s knowledge on fungal and aflatoxin contamination in the diets. Thus, this study aimed to investigate determinants of adults’ knowledge on fungal and aflatoxin contamination in the diets based on two factors namely socio-demographic and socio-economic factors. Method: A questionnaire was self-administered to 160 respondents from a faculty in Universiti Putra Malaysia. Results: Most of respondents had low level of knowledge in regard to fungal and aflatoxin contamination. Besides, the total score of knowledge on fungal and aflatoxin contamination was significantly and positively correlated (r=0.340, P<0.0001). The multivariate analysis indicated that personal income (below US $487) was the only predictor of respondent’s knowledge (β=-0.288, P<0.001) [Odds ratio (OR)=4.996]. Nonetheless, being male and single, divorced or widowed had significant OR of 2.040 and 0.313 respectively as predictors of low level of knowledge. Conclusions: Income inequalities may have impact to the respondents in acquiring knowledge on fungal and aflatoxin contamination in the diets. Additionally, an extensive survey on aflatoxin should be warranted in order to assess the public awareness and knowledge about this food contaminant.
3.Identification and characterization of lactic acid bacteria isolated from fruit tree rhizosphere in MARDI, Malaysia

Aims: Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have promising applications in the biotechnology industry. As their diversity in soil is
largely unexplored, a study was undertaken to collect LAB from the soil, and to characterize the isolates.
Methodology and results: Soil samples from around various fruit trees in MARDI were collected for LAB isolation by
accumulation/incubation method. The isolates were examined for their morphological and biochemical characteristics,
and their 16S rDNA sequences. Morphological and biochemical analysis showed that all isolates are gram positive with
different characteristic for each isolates. Further identification were performed and soil samples was found to contain
diverse genera and species of LAB, including Lactobacillus sp. and Bacillus sp. Selected isolates were tested for
resistance against six antibiotics using agar dilution method. Widespread antibiotic resistance among the strains tested
was found towards ampicillin, kanamycin, rifampicin and penicillin.
Conclusion, significance and impact study: LAB have the ability in producing acid and antimicrobial compound which
are useful in various industry. Fastidious characteristics of LAB are among the limitations and challenges in industrial
applications. Diversity of lactic acid-producing bacteria was encountered in the soil which may be useful and have
different characteristics from LAB isolates elsewhere.

4.Probable carpal tunnel syndrome and its coping strategies among clinical dental support staff in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia

Prolonged work with highly repetitious flexion and extension of the wrist and forceful grip task were
shown to increase the risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) among dental personnel. The present
study was carried out to determine the prevalence, risk factors and coping strategies of probable CTS among
clinical dental support staff in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM). A cross-sectional study was conducted
and a set of questionnaire consisting of socio-demographic status, work-related and psychosocial risk factors and
coping strategies was distributed. Ninety-five clinical dental support staff completed and returned the
questionnaire with a response rate of 80.5%. The prevalence of probable CTS was 38.9%, with the highest
prevalence was found among dental surgery assistants (40.5%) followed by dental technologists (29.7%). There
was no significant association between work-related or psychosocial risk factors with probable CTS (p>0.05).
Most of the respondents with symptoms of CTS chose religion as the coping mechanism; mean 7.11 (SD 1.13).
Awareness training should be emphasized among clinical dental support staff on the prevention of CTS.

5.Association between Polymorphisms of Insulin and Insulin Receptor Gene with Childhood Obesity in Malay Population

Childhood obesity is a global epidemic, which leads to the increasing number of studies on genetic locations associated
with obesity-related traits. Polymorphisms of insulin (INS) gene have been shown to be associated with obesity-related
phenotypes in Europeans; while insulin receptor (INSR) gene has been associated with energy regulation. Therefore, this
study was conducted to investigate the association between the INS (rs689) and INSR (rs3745551) gene polymorphisms
with childhood obesity risk in a Malay childhood population. Normal weight (538) and overweight or obese (557)
children aged 6-12 years old were genotyped using semi-automated Sequenom iPLEX® Gold. Body mass index (BMI) was
calculated from measured body weight and height. The rs689 (T/T: 0.006, A/T: 0.159 and A/A: 0.835) and rs3745551
(G/G: 0.054, A/G: 0.378 and A/A: 0.568) genotype distributions were consistent with Hardy Weinberg equilibrium.
The T-minor allele frequency for rs689 was 8.6% and G-minor allele frequency for rs3745551 was 24.3%. Minor
allele of INS gene polymorphisms significantly increased risk of obesity among Malay children (sex- and age-adjusted
OR=1.580; 95%CI: 1.134-2.201). However, INSR gene polymorphisms were not significantly associated with childhood
obesity. In conclusion, the polymorphisms of INS gene, rather than INSR gene, were associated with childhood obesity
in the Malay population.

6.Cellulase activity in solid state fermentation of palm kernel cake with Trichoderma sp.

Aims: The effect of different types of fungal inocula to the cellulase activity measured on palm kernel cake (PKC) was studied.
Methodology and Results: Isolate Pro-A1 which was identified as Trichoderma sp. was selected as a potential producer of cellulase via solid state fermentation technique (SSF). Two types of PKCs were used; raw PKC (containing residual oil) and defatted PKC. The PKCs were inoculated with different concentrations of conidia and varying amounts (g) of solid mycelia plugs (SMP) for SSF. The effect of ultrafiltered crude fungal filtrate (CFF) as inocula was also being tested. The highest cellulase activity of 2.454 FPU/mL was detected with 60% (wt/wt) SMP applied to the raw PKC. Conversely, 2.059 FPU/mL of cellulase activity was measured when 80% (wt/wt) of SMP was applied to the defatted PKC which is 62.3% higher than the untreated defatted PKC; and more than 100% increase in enzymatic activity compared to raw PKC. The cellulase activity in the SSF inoculated with 8 x 106 conidia /mL and 12 x 106 conidia /mL were 1.704 FPU/mL for raw PKC and 1.856 FPU/mL for defatted PKC, an enhancement of about 46% from uninoculated batch. Inoculation with CFF bears corresponding maximum improvement of the cellulase activity on both PKCs of 13.58% (raw) and 2.86% (defatted).
Conclusion, significance and impact of study: The current study proves that Trichoderma sp. in the form of SMP can enhance the cellulase activity on PKCs effectively with more than 100% increment. Fungal conidia are also a better choice in enhancing cellulase activity of Trichoderma sp. permitted that the PKC used is devoid of oil. From this study, Trichoderma sp. holds the potential of converting lignocellulosic materials into products of commercial and industrial values such as glucose and other biofuels.
7.Antimicrobial wound dressing film utilizing nano-cellulose and gelatin as drug delivery system for Garcinia mangostana L extract

Aims:
Diabetic patients with foot ulcer showed 150-fold increased risk of amputation, which is primarily caused by microbial infection. Silver ions are commonly incorporated into wound dressing to enhance the antimicrobial property. However, concerns have been expressed about the development of bacterial resistance to heavy metals. In this study, we extracted the nano-cellulose from medical cotton and reinforced with gelatin to develop a film for wound dressing.
Methodology and results:
Garcinia mangostana L pericarp extract was incorporated into the nano-cellulose film as antimicrobial finishing. The efficacy of the developed nano-cellulose film was evaluated on diabetic wound microorganisms. We observed cellulose nano crystals with an average length of 133.71 nm under transmission electron microscope. The developed film showed gradual release of the extract over a period of 48 h and no burst effect was observed. The film exhibited significant inhibitory activity on three Gram positive bacteria, three Gram negative and all filamentous fungi tested. On Hohenstein challenge test, all test microorganisms showed significant growth reduction, with the treatment of the film. We also noticed that the antimicrobial activity of the film sustained even after 20 washes.
Conclusion, significance and impact of study
Our results indicate that the G. mangostana L pericarp extract loaded nano-cellulose films exhibited significant inhibitory activity on diabetic wound microorganisms. The developed film can be potentially used to prevent foot ulcer infection among diabetic patients.
8.Glucocerebrosidase genetic variants in Malays with early and late-onset Parkinson’s disease

Background: Mutations in glucocerebrosidase (GBA) have been associated with the risk of developing
Parkinson’s disease (PD) in different ethnic populations. The prevalence of GBA mutations among
Malay PD patients is unknown. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the frequency of GBA
mutations among Malay PD patients, focusing on early (EOPD) and late-onset (LOPD) patients.
Methods:EOPD (n = 50) and LOPD (n = 50) patients along with 50 ethnically and age-matched control wererecruited. The GBA exons of these patients were sequenced using the Ion Torrent PGMTM System.
Results: Five heterozygous mutations exclusive to EOPD patients were identified; c.-203A>G,p.S146L,
p.R159Q, p.L483P and p.L483R+c.-145G>A. In LOPD patients, c.543C>T(p.(F181=)), c.28-10C>A
and p.R202Q were identified in which this p.R202Q was also present in a control subject. In addition,
c.259C>A(p.(R87=)) and c.-145G>A were identified in two control subjects. In summary, we observed
GBA mutations in 8% and 6% of Malay PD cases and control subject, respectively. The prevalence
of GBA mutations was higher in EOPD (10%) than LOPD (6%). However, these differences were
not statistically significant; [PD vs. controls: OR = 1.36, 95%CI 0.35-5.38, p = 0.752] and [EOPD
vs. LOPD: OR = 1.74, 95%CI 0.39-7.71, p = 0.715].
Conclusion: We identified five exclusive heterozygous GBA mutations in EOPD patients which might
predict the increase susceptibility of Malays to develop PD at young age. These findings could add
knowledge into the existing evidences linking genetic alterations in GBA and PD.
9.Design And Development Of Ergonomic Table And Analyze Using RULA Analysis

Ergonomics and design have made the greatest relation in producing an artifact or creating a workplace. A computer table is widely used in classrooms in universities. However, the problems of the current computer table have been detected through the results of RULA analysis. In this project, a survey of the questionnaire was done and the anthropometric data have also been collected. The dimensions of the current computer table are then collected and the deficiencies of the current computer table have been focused on RULA analysis. A new structural design of the computer table has been designed, in order to meet the requirements of ergonomics. A product of the new design of ergonomics computer table is made and has been focused on RULA analysis to define the improvement between both tables. The paper showed a comparison between the current computer table and the new ergonomics computer table were analyzed. The improvement of the new ergonomics computer table was identified and reduced the injuries and disorders. A further investigation on better working posture when using a computer table is required, while further improvement for the product design of a new ergonomics computer table is needed, as well as the application of the ergonomics design aspect in our life.

Summary
Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious communicable disease of major concern in endemic regions. Cutaneous
tuberculosis (CTB), which accounts for less than 1% of all cases, can cause severe infection in susceptible
patients.
The diagnosis of CTB is challenging as it can present with a multitude of clinical presentations.
The diagnosis must be supported by highly sensitive and specific investigations. This paper highlights the
susceptibility of immunocompromised patients to the development of CTB and the challenges in making a
diagnosis.
