Public health surveillance, through the ongoing and systematic collection, analysis, interpretation and dissemination of health information, plays a critical role in informed decision-making and appropriate public health action.1 Different surveillance systems are required to meet disease-specific public health objectives, and some systems have been expanded through the collection of risk factor, behaviour and health practice information.
2.Tuberculosis case-finding in Cambodia: analysis of case notification data, 2000 to 2013

The routine tuberculosis (TB) surveillance system in Cambodia has been strengthened under the National TB Programme (NTP). This paper provides an overview of the TB surveillance data for Cambodia at the national level for the period 2000 to 2013 and at the subnational level for 2013.
The proportion of the total population that were screened for TB rose from 0.4% in 2001 to 1.1% in 2013, while the smear-positivity rate decreased from 28.9% to 8.1% in the same period. The total number of notified TB cases increased steadily from 2000; this has stabilized in recent years with 39 055 cases notified in 2013. The proportion of all TB cases that were smear-positive decreased from 78% in 2000 to 36% in 2013. Case notification rates (CNRs) for all forms of TB and new smear-positive TB in 2013 were 261 and 94 per 100 000 population, respectively. Higher CNRs were found in the north-west and south-east parts of the country and were higher for males especially in older age groups.
The increase in TB screening, decline in the smear-positive rate and decline in notified smear-positive TB cases likely reflect a long-term positive impact of the NTP. A negative correlation between the proportion of the population screened and the smear-positivity rate at the subnational level helped identify where to find undiagnosed cases. Subnational differences in case notification of the elderly and in children provide more specific targets for case-finding and further encourage strategic resource allocation.
4.Reoperation following Aortic Valve Replacement Using Tilting Disc Valve Prostheses.

Fifty-three patients who had received aortic valve replacement (AVR) using tilting disc valve prostheses (Lillehei-Kaster valve, Omniscience valve, Omnicarbon valve), underwent replacement of their aortic valve prostheses over the past 13 years. The indications for reoperation were non-structural opening failure in 35 patients, thrombosed valves, including 2 stuck valves in 8, prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) in 7 and perivalvular leakage (PVL) in 3. The interval periods until reoperation for opening failure and thrombosed valve were 112 and 118 months respectively, and for PVE and PVL were 21 and 25 months. There were 7 hospital deaths (13.2%). Surgical results in cases of active PVE with root abscess and stuck valve required emergency operation were significantly worse than these for nonstructural opening failure. Opening failures, which accounted for two-thirds of the indications for reoperation was found to be due to subvalvular pannus formation on minor orifices which hindered the disc from opening properly. It was suggested that reoperation for these types of prosthetic valve should be done before they develop into emergency cases, taking account of these valve-related complications.
5.Efficacy of the Checksheet for Appropriate Prescription of DOAC

Objective: The use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) has increased because they have some advantages over warfarin, such as fewer interactions and no requirement for coagulation monitoring in principle. DOACs have dose adjustment requirement based on renal function and other complex criteria that differ depending on specific DOAC preparations and indications. At the Nagoya City East Medical Center, DOAC dose‒related decisions previously depended on the knowledge and discretion of individual pharmacists. However, a dose checking sheet for DOACs (the Checking Sheet) was prepared and used on our electronic medical record system since September 2016 to increase the reliability of prescription checking, eliminate improper prescriptions, and ensure electronic documentation of pharmaceutical inquiries. In this study, we compared percentages of proper prescriptions before and after the introduction of the Checking Sheet to assess the effectiveness of its use, which has not been reported previously.Method: The percentage of proper DOAC prescriptions was used as a measure to assess the effectiveness of the Checking Sheet. We investigated DOAC prescriptions from March 2017, when the Checking Sheet system had been established, and compared those with prescriptions from March 2016 (before the Checking Sheet was introduced). Prescriptions of rivaroxaban, apixaban, edoxaban, and dabigatran for nonvalvular atrial fibrillation or venous thromboembolism were included; prescriptions dispensed outside the hospital were excluded.Result: DOAC prescriptions before and after the Checking Sheet introduction were similar in number. The percentage of proper prescriptions increased significantly from 82.4 to 94.3%. Among specific DOAC preparations, the number of improper prescriptions decreased significantly for apixaban and showed a tendency to decrease for rivaroxaban.Conclusion: The increases in the number of proper DOAC prescriptions observed after introducing the Checking Sheet showed that the Checking Sheet helped ensure a certain level of prescription checking, suggesting its usefulness for promoting proper DOAC use.
