4.Application of different biomaterials in the preservation of vital pulp in carious deciduous teeth: a prospective, single-center, randomized, controlled clinical trial
Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2017;21(22):3494-3500
BACKGROUND:The success of the preservation of vital pulp in carious deciduous teeth depends not only on determining the health status of the pulp, but also on selecting the most suitable pulp capping agent. At present, the commonly used pulp capping agent materials contain calcium hydroxide preparation and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA).Recently, new biomaterials, such as Bioaggregate,Biodentine, and TheraCal,with good biocompatibility and good edge sealing, have been developed and extensively used.OBJECTIVE:To compare the efficacies of MTA,calcium hydroxide preparation,Biodentine and TheraCal LC that are commonly used in pediatric dentistry in the preservation of vital pulp in carious deciduous teeth.METHODS:This prospective,single-center,randomized controlled clinical trial will be conducted in Chengdu Maternal and Child Center,China.Children with deep caries of deciduous teeth, who will be scheduled to undergo indirect pulp capping, direct pulp capping, and vital pulpotomy, will be selected and randomized into four groups according to pulp capping agents:MTA group, calcium hydroxide group,Biodentine group and TheraCal group.Patients will receive return visit at postoperative 3,6 and 12 months during follow-up.By using X-ray,we will observe and compare the speed and quality of the formation of the dentin bridge with different biomaterials, and assess the reason for the failure of treatment. This trial was registered in ClinicalTrials.gov identifier:NCT03220360,on July 14,2017.The study protocol has been approved by the Ethics Committee of Chengdu Maternal and Child Center,China (approval number:20170506).All protocols will be performed in accordance with the Ethical Principles for Medical Research Involving Human Subjects in the Declaration of Helsinki.Written informed consent will be provided by each patient and their family members after they indicated that they fully understood the treatment plan.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:This study will compare the efficacies of various biomaterials in the preservation of vital pulp in carious deciduous teeth.New materials Biodentine and TheraCal will be selected in classical technique to verify their efficacies and explore their superiorities.Classical materials calcium hydroxide and MTA will be selected as controls, which will be separately used in indirect pulp capping, direct pulp capping, and vital pulpotomy to provide reliable choices for clinicians.
5.Survey of stress, anxiety and depression among Filipino military personnel: A pilot study
The Philippine Journal of Psychiatry 2018;40(2):39-
Objectives:
This study aims to determine the frequency
of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Anxiety and
Depression among military personnel as well as describe
their coping style.
Methodology:
This was a cross
sectional descriptive study of military personnel. (Member
of the Armed Forces of the Philippines), in active service i.e.
must have been deployed to a combat zone at some point in
time, drawn by convenience sampling. They were screened
using the Filipino version of the Zung Depression Scale and
the Hamilton Anxiety Scale after securing voluntary consent
of the subjects.
Results:
There were 673 servicemen who
participated in the study with many undergoing advancement
schooling at the time of interview. Responses of only 598
subjects were included in the analysis since the others failed
to complete the standardized demographic profile data
sheet. Seven (1.1 %) were noted to be anxious; and 5 (0.8%)
were depressed while no one were noted to have PTSD. The
most common coping mechanisms in handling stress were
smoking cigarettes, talking to a friend or drinking alcoholic
beverages.
Conclusion
The prevalence of anxiety,
depression and absence of PTSD were lower than expected
but this may be due to the fact that at the time of interview
the servicemen were not coming directly from a combat
zone but had been taking up further studies over the past
1- 3 months in Metro Manila

Acta Medica Philippina 2022;56(18):62-68
Physical trauma significantly influences pregnancy outcomes leading to feto-maternal morbidity or mortality. A 20-year-old G1P0 (33 weeks 4/7 days AOG) COVID- 19 suspect was accidentally impaled by a falling metal rod while aboard her electric scooter. This paper highlights the peculiarities of anesthetizing a parturient with an impaled foreign body in the abdominal cavity while ensuring the well-being of the fetus amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Philippine Journal of Health Research and Development 2017;21(2):.-
BACKGROUND: Dissemination of health communication materials is one of the most important strategies to increase awareness on the prevention and control of leptospirosis. One of the projects under the Program on the Prevention and Control of Leptospirosis in the Philippines (LepCon) is the dissemination of health communication materials.
OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the dissemination of health communication materials to 14 city and municipal health offices in the National Capital Region (NCR), Philippines. Specifically, this study determined: (1) how the health communication materials were disseminated by the city and municipal health offices; (2) the placement of the materials in the health facilities; and (3) the challenges encountered during the dissemination process.
RESULTS: The city/municipal health offices used different approaches in disseminating the health
communication materials and these are classified into distribution for public consumption, utilization as health education materials, and maintenance of supply by reproducing the materials in other forms. Eleven (11) out of the 14 city/municipal health offices (78.6%) still had leptospirosis posters. Seven (50%) of them posted the poster in the health facility. However, only four (28.6%) facilities placed the posters in locations where health facility clients can easily see and read them. Two of the 14 city/municipal health offices (14.3%) had an information, education and communication (IEC) display area where the LepCon fan is one of the health communication materials on display. The number of materials provided to the health offices was noted to be inadequate to reach the health facilities' target audiences. Finally, the monitoring and evaluation of health communication materials disseminated to facilities under health offices' jurisdiction was also a big challenge.
CONCLUSIONS: Different approaches were used in disseminating the posters and fans to the health facilities under the jurisdiction of the city/municipal health offices. It was also noted that the number of materials provided to the health offices was not adequate to reach the health facilities' target audiences. Although three-fourths of the health offices covered still have health communication materials in their facility, only less than 25% of these facilities have posters placed in strategic locations in the facility. A formal scheme of monitoring the dissemination of the materials was expressed by the informants.
