Ho Chi Minh city Medical Association 2005;10(4):203-205
Retrospective study on 163 cases of appendicular peritonitis, which were diagnosed and treated with laparoscopic appendectomy in the Central General Hospital of Tien Giang from January 2003 to June 2004. Results: the accuracy of laparoscopic diagnosis was 100% and complete laparoscopic management was achieved in 99.3%. The mean operating time was 45 minutes. The mean hospital stay was 5.08 days. Wound infection rate was 1.22%. Intra-abdominal infection: 0%. Mortality: 0%. Malignant hypercapnia or postoperative sepsis shock were not found in this study. There were no bowel obstructions or incisional hernias with a mean follow-up of 12 months. The laparoscopic treatment of appendicular peritonitis is effective, safe and beneficial for patients, without any specific complications. It may be performed routinely by experienced laparoscopic surgeons

Background: Buxus latistyla Gagnep. (Buxaceae) has been used as a remedy for treating malaria, haemoptysis, amoebic dysentery etc. However, its chemical constituents are still unknown. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify phytochemicals isolated from this plant. Materials and method: Aerial parts of B. latistyla were collected from Quang Tri province. Pure compounds were isolated using the combination of chromatographic methods. Structures of isolated compounds were identified by analyzing spectral data of nuclear magnetic resonance as well as by comparing with reported data. Results & Conclusion: Five triterpenes were isolated and identified including lupeol (1), lupenone (2), betulin (3), 20(29)-lupene-2α,3α-diol (4), 20(29)-lupene-2α,3α,28-triol (5). This is the first report about those phytochemicals of B. latistyla collected in Vietnam.
