Background: Over the last few decades, the incidence of hyperuricemia has increased. Recently, the incidences of gout and asymptomatic hyperuricemia have been rapidly increasing in Korea. A correlation between serum uric acid (SUA) level and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol has already been identified, but it has been rarely studied in the Korean population. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between serum uric acid level and LDL cholesterol using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2017). Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 8,127 Korean adults aged 19–79 years. Individuals were cancer excluded. Participants were classified as having hyperuricemia if SUA levels were ≥7.0 mg/dL in men and ≥6.0 mg/dL in women. The correlation between SUA level and LDL cholesterol was analyzed by complex sample linear regression analysis. Results: In men, LDL cholesterol was higher in participants with hyperuricemia (120.6±1.61) than in normal individuals (114.3±0.84) (P<0.001). In women, LDL cholesterol was higher in participants with hyperuricemia (125.6±3.25) than in normal individuals (117.6±0.69) (P=0.0149). We used 3 models with progressive degrees of adjustment. Model 1 was adjusted for age, gender, alcohol, smoking, and body mass index. Model 2 was further adjusted for hypertension and diabetes. Model 3 was further adjusted for dyslipidemia, stroke, myocardial infarction or angina, and liver cirrhosis. After adjusting for potential confounders, LDL cholesterol was higher in the hyperuricemic group than in the normal group (P<0.001). Conclusion The study results confirm that a positive correlation exists between serum uric acid level and LDL cholesterol.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of obesity in Korea is continuously increasing, and there are several international studies that suggest obese populations are not likely to wear seatbelts when driving a car. Even though the rate of seatbelt use in Korean adults is 79.8%, which is much lower than 94% for OECD countries, no studies have been conducted related to this particular issue in Korea. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and seatbelt use in Korea where BMI standards, laws, cultures, and social conventions totally differ from those of western countries.METHODS: This study was conducted on 8,556 drivers, aged 19 or older, using raw data from the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013–2015). A stratified and cross-sectional analysis was used to figure out seatbelt use rates according to BMI, and a multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to determine the odds ratio (OR) of seatbelt use by BMI groups.RESULTS: Increase in BMI resulted in a decrease in seatbelt use. The extremely obese group particularly had much lower rates of seatbelt use compared to other groups. After adjusting other variables, only the extremely obese group had much lower rates of seatbelt use (OR 0.68, 95% confidence interval 0.53–0.87).CONCLUSION: Seatbelt use rates according to BMI had no significant differences between the non-obese group, the overweight group, and the obese group. However, the extremely obese group had a tendency to not wear seatbelts when driving a car.

BACKGROUND: Although the prevalence of e-cigarette smoking is increasing worldwide, the harmfulness of e-cigarette is not obvious. A previous study reported that e-cigarette smoking is associated with depressive symptoms in college students irrespective of tobacco smoking. However, there has been no research that has addressed this issue in the general population to date. This study was conducted to clarify the association between e-cigarette smoking and depressive symptoms in Korean adults.METHODS: The cross-sectional study collected raw data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016) and included 5,742 adults, who were ≥19 years and responded to the survey of smoking and mental health section. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the odds ratio of depressive symptoms by e-cigarette smoking experience and included sex, age, educational level, marital status, household income level, self-rated health, activity restriction, obesity, tobacco smoking experience, alcohol drinking experience, and stress perception level as covariates. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the patient health questionnaire-9, Korean edition.RESULTS: The rate of depressive symptoms in subjects was 5.6% (n=354) in total. Individuals with depressive symptoms were more likely to have used e-cigarettes (15.6%) than those without depressive symptoms (8.6%; P=0.001). The e-cigarette experienced group showed a higher risk of depressive symptoms (odds ratio, 1.71; 95% confidence interval, 1.004–2.924) than the e-cigarette unexperienced group. The result was adjusted based on the abovementioned covariates.CONCLUSION: In Korean adults, a significant association between e-cigarette smoking experience and depressive symptoms was observed.

Cortical lesions of the supplementary motor area (SMA) are important in balance control and postural recovery in stroke patients, while the role of subcortical lesions of the SMA has not been studied. This study aimed to investigate the subcortical projections of the SMA and its relationship with ataxia in supratentorial stroke patients. Thirty-three patients with hemiparesis were divided into 3 groups (severe ataxia, n = 9; mild to moderate ataxia, n = 13; no ataxia, n = 11). Ataxia severity was assessed using the Scale for Ataxia Rating Assessment. Diffusion tensor imaging analysis used the fractional anisotropy (FA) values and tract volume as parameters of white matter tract degeneration. The FA values of regions related to ataxia were analyzed, that is the SMA, posterior limb of the internal capsule, basal ganglia, superior cerebellar peduncle, middle cerebellar peduncle, inferior cerebellar peduncle, and cerebellum. Tract volumes of the corticostriatal tract and cortico-ponto-cerebellar (CPC) tract originating from the SMA were evaluated. There were significant differences among the 3 groups in FA values of the subcortical regions of the CPC tract. Furthermore, the volume of the CPC tract originating from the SMA showed significant negative correlation with ataxia severity. There was no correlation between ataxia and corticostriatal tract volume. Therefore, we found that subcortical lesions of the CPC tract originating from the SMA could contribute to ataxia severity in stroke patients with ataxic hemiparesis.

We investigated the diffusion tensor image (DTI) parameters of superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) and inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF), and their relationships with hemispatial neglect. Thirteen patients with first-ever ischemic stroke who had the right hemispheric lesion were included. Neglect was assessed using the Albert test and figure discrimination test of Motor-free Visual Perception Test 3 (MVPT-3). The SLF and IFOF were separated by diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) and tract volume (TV) was calculated. We measured the fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values in the total area, seed region of interest (ROI), and target ROI, respectively. Among thirteen patients, seven demonstrated signs of hemispatial neglect on neglect test. Tractography reconstruction showed significantly low TV of the right IFOF in patients with hemispatial neglect. FA values of the right SLF and the right IFOF were significantly lower in neglect patients. ADC values were not significantly different in two groups. This study suggests that damage of SLF and IFOF is associated with hemispatial neglect in right hemispheric stroke patients. DTI may be useful for predicting the severities of hemispatial neglect using values such as TV and FA of each tract.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between ipsilesional upper extremity (UE) motor function and the integrity of the subregions of the corpus callosum in hemiparetic stroke patients with motor deficits of the dominant or non-dominant ipsilesional side.Twenty participants with unilateral UE deficits after stroke were included. Each of the 10 participants had lesions on the left and right sides. The ipsilesional UE function was assessed with the Jebsen-Taylor hand function test (JHFT), the 9-hole peg test (9HPT), and grip and pinch strength tests. Fractional anisotropy (FA) was calculated for the integrity of the 5 subregions of the corpus callosum. Pearson’s correlation analysis was conducted to investigate the relationship between UE function and the integrity of the callosal subregions.The results of JHFT and 9HPT showed a significant correlation with the FA value of the corpus callosum I projecting to the frontal lobe in the left lesion group (p < 0.05). There was no correlation between the ipsilesional UE motor function and the FA value of the ulnar subregion in the right lesion group (p > 0.05). These results showed that the motor deficits of the ipsilesional UE correlated with the integrity of callosal fiber projection to the prefrontal area when the ipsilesional side was non-dominant.

Purpose: This study aimed to establish baseline morphological and functional data for normal mouse kidneys via a clinical 33 MHz ultra-high-frequency (UHF) transducer, compare the data with the findings from fibrotic mice, and assess correlations between ultrasonography (US) parameters and fibrosis-related markers. Methods: This retrospective study aggregated data from three separate experiments (obstructive nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, and acute-to-chronic kidney injury models). Morphological parameters (kidney size, parenchymal thickness [PT]) and functional (shear-wave speed [SWS], stiffness, resistive index [RI], and microvascular imaging-derived vascular index [VI]) were assessed and compared between normal and fibrotic mouse kidneys. Semi-quantitative histopathologic scores were calculated and molecular markers (epithelial cadherin), Collagen 1A1 [Col1A1], transforming growth factor-β, and α-smooth muscle actin [α-SMA]) were evaluated using western blots. Correlations with US parameters were explored. Results: Clinical UHF US successfully imaged the kidneys of the experimental mice. A three-layer configuration was prevalent in the normal mouse kidney parenchyma (34/35) but was blurred in most fibrotic mouse kidneys (33/40). US parameters, including size (11.14 vs. 10.70 mm), PT (2.07 vs. 1.24 mm), RI (0.64 vs. 0.77), VI (22.55% vs. 11.47%, only for non-obstructive kidneys), SWS (1.67 vs. 2.06 m/s), and stiffness (8.23 vs. 12.92 kPa), showed significant differences between normal and fibrotic kidneys (P<0.001). These parameters also demonstrated strong discriminative ability in receiver operating characteristic curve analysis (area under the curve, 0.76 to 0.95; P<0.001). PT, VI, and RI were significantly correlated with histological fibrosis markers (ρ=-0.64 to -0.68 for PT and VI, ρ=0.71-0.76 for RI, P<0.001). VI exhibited strong negative correlations with Col1A1 (ρ=-0.76, P=0.006) and α-SMA (ρ=-0.75, P=0.009). Conclusion Clinical UHF US effectively distinguished normal and fibrotic mouse kidneys, indicating the potential of US parameters, notably VI, as noninvasive markers for tracking fibrosis initiation and progression in mouse kidney fibrosis models.
