1.Non-occupational lead exposure and hypertension in Pakistani adults.

Hypertension is one of the most prevalent diseases in the developed and developing countries. Based on the long historical association and the provocative findings of blood pressure effects at low level of lead exposure a study was carried out to determine if an association existed between low blood lead concentration and hypertension. In this study the effects of low-level exposure to lead on blood pressure were examined among 244 adults using atomic absorption spectrometer. For quality assurance purpose certified reference materials i.e., Animal blood A-13, Bovine liver 1577 and cotton cellulose V-9 from IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) and NIST (National Institute of Standard Technology) were analyzed under identical experimental conditions. The mean age of hypertensive adults was 52 years (range 43 - 66). The mean values of systolic and diastolic blood pressure were (209+/-11.7) (range 170 - 250) and (117+/-3.9) (range 105 - 140) mmHg respectively. Blood lead concentration ranged from 78 - 201 microg/L with a mean of 139 microg/L and 165 - 497 microg/L with a mean of 255 microg/L in normal and hypertensive adults respectively. Increase in systolic blood pressure was significantly predictive with increase in blood lead levels. Body mass index (BMI) and lipid profile including total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride correlated with blood pressure.

2.Determination of Bergenin in Different Parts of Bergenia ciliata using a Validated RP-HPLC Method

Bergenia ciliata (Family: Saxifragaceae) is a folklore remedy for the treatment of various ailments in Asian countries. Bergenin (1) has been isolated as an active constituent in many studies, however, the amount of bergenin has not been determined in all parts of the plant. A simple RP-HPLC method was developed to determine the amount of bergenin in methanol extracts of leaves, rhizomes and roots of the plant. Separation was achieved on an Agilent Eclipse XDB-C18 column maintained at 25 o C using isocratic solvent system (water: methanol: acetic acid; 62.5:37:0.5 v/v/v) adjusted at pH 2 0 at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. and detected at 275 nm. Correlation coefficient (0.9952) showed linearity of concentration (5-200 μg/mL) and response. The values of LOD (0.00947 μg/mL) and LOQ (0.02869 μg/mL) indicated that method was sensitive. The recovery of bergenin was 99.99-100% indicating accuracy of method. The methanol extract of rhizomes contained higher amount of bergenin (19.4%) than roots (9.2%) and leaves (6.9%). It is concluded that methanol extract of rhizomes is a better source of bergenin than other parts of the plant. The findings are useful for standardization of bergenin containing extracts and herbal preparations.

4.Pathogenic Vibrio spp. identified for white syndrome coral disease in Tioman Island Marine Park, Malaysia

Aims:
Coral diseases have emerged over the last several decades, causing a loss of live coral cover in the Caribbean
and Indo-Pacific reefs. Hence, microbiological and disease cultural techniques are commonly used to investigate their
causative microbial agents. This is the first study to identify the potential of pathogenic Vibrio spp. isolated from
apparently white syndrome (WS) coral disease in Tioman Island Marine Park using biochemical and molecular
techniques.
Methodology and results:
The Vibrio colonies were isolated from 108 samples of WS infected corals (Acropora
cytherea and Montipora aequituberculata) including seawater, sediment and algae found adjacent to infected coral
colonies. A total of one hundred representative Vibrio isolates were characterized and most of them (n=50) were
identified as V. vulnificus, V. alginolyticus and Photobacterium damselae following biochemical analysis. The molecular
analysis revealed six Vibrio spp. (V. coralliilyticus, V. hepatarius, V. brasiliensis, V. tubiashi, V. campbellii, V.
ishigakensis) and one Photobacterium rosenbergii. Vibrio coralliilyticus isolated from all infected coral samples may be
highly responsible for the sign of WS disease.
Conclusion, significance and impact of study
The findings of this study provide baseline data and information on
potential coral pathogens identified in the coastal waters of Tioman Island. Etiological disease study is suggested to
validate their severity and virulence factors in the future.
