2.Unexpected Death due to Massive Nontraumatic Intraabdominal Hemorrhage in association with Liver Cirrhosis.

We reports a woman's death caused by massive intraabdominal hemorrhage, who was in chronic alcoholic state with advanced liver cirrhosis and found dead in her room. No macroscopic source for the bleeding was found in her intraabdomen and there was no circumstances of traumatic forces to the individual's body around the death. The presenting unsuspected death could be consistent with the forensic pathological cases described as sudden, unexpected death due to massive nontraumatic intraabdominal hemorrhage in association with liver cirrhosis by DiMaio in 1987.

Eosinophilic granuloma of bone is a self-limited condition, characteristically a disease of children and young adults. It is the most benign variant of histiocytosis X. It is most common in skull, but any bone may be affected. Vertebral involvement occurs in about 10 to 15%. This benign bone destructive lesion is characterized by the presence of Langerhans cells contain Birbeck granules, infilitration of histiocytes and eosinophilic leukocytes unknown origin. We report a eosinophilic granuloma in lumbar spine of old patient.

4.Extensor Digitorum Brevis Manus.

Extensor digitorum brevis manus (EDBM) is a rare variation of the extensor muscle of the dorsum of the hand, which is found incidentally during surgery or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). EDBM arises from the wrist capsule inferior to the extensor retinaculum, which frequently goes into the ulna side of the basis of the proximal phalanx between the 2nd and 3rd fingers. The aim of this report is evaluate to investigate the symptomatic mass on the dorsum of the hand and wrist using an image study (MRI or ultrasonography) to confirm whether it is a tumor or EDBM. Surgical excision was chosen as a treatment.

6.Effects of Cudrania tricuspidata and Sargassum fusiforme extracts on hair growth in C57BL/6 mice

Background:
Cudrania tricuspidata is a perennial plant, and Sargassum fusiforme is a brown seaweed with numerous potential benefits, including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities. However, the efficacies of C. tricuspidata and S. fusiforme on hair growth have not yet been elucidated. Therefore, the present study examined the effects of C. tricuspidata and S. fusiforme extracts on hair growth in C57BL/6 mice.
Results:
ImageJ demonstrated that drinking and skin application of C. tricuspidata and/or S. fusiforme extracts significantly increased the hair growth rate in the dorsal skin of C57BL/6 mice compared to the control group. Histological analysis confirmed that drinking and skin application of C. tricuspidata and/or S. fusiforme extracts for 21 days significantly increased the length of hair follicles on the dorsal skin of treated C57BL/6 mice compared to that in the control mice. RNA sequencing analysis revealed that hair growth cycle-related factors (anagen factors) such as Catenin Beta 1 (Ctnnb1) and platelet-derived growth factor (Pdgf) were upregulated (> twofold) only by C. tricuspidata extracts, whereas vascular endothelial growth factor (Vegf) and Wnts were upregulated by both C. tricuspidata or S. fusiforme applications in treated mice (compared to the control mice). In addition, oncostatin M (Osm, a catagen-telogen factor) was downregulated (< 0.5 fold) by C. tricuspidata when administered via both skin and drinking mode in treated mice compared to that in control mice.
Conclusions
Our results suggest that C. tricuspidata and/or S. fusiforme extracts show potential hair growth efficacy by upregulating anagen factor genes, including β-catenin, Pdgf, Vegf, and Wnts, and downregulating catagen-telogen factor genes, including Osm, in C57BL/6 mice. The findings suggest that C. tricuspidata and/or S. fusiforme extracts are potential drug candidates to treat alopecia.
7.Correlates of Depression and Anxiety in Acute Stroke Patients.

BACKGROUND: This study is aimed at the pathoanatomic correlates of depression and anxiety in acute stroke patients including subcortical lesion(periventricular hyperintensity, deep white matter hyperintensity, subcortical gray matter hyperintensity). METHODS: Sixty nine patients with acute stoke were recruited. Their brain lesions were measured using Brain MRI. Depressive or anxiety symptoms were rated by Beck depression inventory(BDI) or Beck anxiety inventory, respectively. RESULTS: There were significant correlation between depression and periventricular hyperintensity and deep white matter hyperintensity in acute stroke patients. There are no significant pathoanatomic correla- tions between anxiety and brain lesions on MRI. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that the white matter lesion may increase the risk of depression after stroke. Prevention of asymptomatic cerebrovascular lesion could decrease the risk of depression in acute stroke patients as well as the risk of stroke.

9.Aprotinin Reduced Blood Loss in Spinal Deformity Surgery.

PURPOSE: Complications are quite common in surgery to correct spinal deformities due to the long duration under anesthesia and massive blood loss. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of Aprotinin in spinal deformity surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-nine patients who underwent spinal deformity surgery were analyzed. Thirty-two patients were administered Aprotinin, and 27 control patients were not. The Pre- and Post- operative hemoglobin and hematocrit, blood loss, transfusion requirements, operative time, postoperative blood loss through suction drains and duration of suction drains were measured in both groups. RESULTS: There were no differences in age, gender, height, weight, hemodynamic indices, postoperative blood loss through the suction drains and the duration of the suction drains between the two groups. Intraoperative blood loss, transfusion and operative time were 1,345+/-425 cc, 1,008+/-721 cc, and 247 minutes in the Aprotinin (+) group and 2,070+/-1,276 cc, 2,552+/-2,791 cc, and 279 minutes in the Aprotinin (-) group, respectively. The postoperative hemoglobin and hematocrit levels were also significantly different (12.9+/-1 cc and 38.3+/-3.1% in the Aprotinin (+) group, and 11.9+/-1.8 cc and 35+/-5.5% in the Aprotinin (-) group, respectively). CONCLUSION: There was significantly less intraoperative blood loss, transfusion and surgery time in the group administered Aprotinin. Therefore, Aprotinin can be used in spinal deformity surgery that has a high risk of massive blood loss.

10.Stercoral Colitis Leading to Fatal Peritonitis and Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome.

The stercoral colitis is an inflammatory process involving the colonic wall related to fecal impaction. This rare condition usually has a poor prognosis. We experienced a death case where an 84 years old woman died of stercoral colitis complications after total knee arthroplasty surgery. The fatal complications were peritonitis with systemic inflammatory response syndrome, not accompanying bowel perforations. We would like to show the autopsy case of stercoral colitis and suggest the importance of early suspicion and treatment.
