Most of the breast cancer revealed mass and/or microcalcifications on mammography. We analyzed morphologic characteristics of the masses and microcalcifications on mammography which confirmed as breast cancer pathologically. Of all 54 cases, 4 patients (7%) showed microcalcification only, 27 patients (50%), mass only, and the other 23 patients (43%), both microcalcification and mass on the mammography. The margin of the breast mass were ill-defined in 37 cases, well-defined in 8 cases, and well-defined with surrounding infiltration in 5 cases. The morphologic characteristics of the microcalcification were punctate-linear-V shape in 11 patients, punctate-linear shape in 9 patients, and punctate shape in 7 patients.

We analyzed the occurrence of enteric viruses and bacteria at 22 places of drinkable groundwater (civil defense emergency water-supply facility), 8 places of the groundwater used for drinking water in group food services, and 10 places of spring-water. When the 40 concentrated samples were analyzed using nested RT-PCR and real-time RT PCR methods, norovirus and other enteric viruses were not detected in all samples tested. The detection percentages for total coliforms, Escherichia coli, Yersinia enterocolitica of fecal indicator were 57.5%, 22.5% and 7.5%, respectively. Colipages were not detected. These results suggest that high levels of fecal indicator bacteria in groundwater and spring-water are not directly related to occurrence of enteric viruses.

PURPOSE: Many evidences about hyperuricemia as a risk factor to hypertension and renal progression in kidney diseases have been reported. We have analyzed the impact of uric acid on renal progression of IgA nephropathy while getting rid of possible confounding variables and revealed the possible pathophysiology of uric acid in terms of hypertension or renal vasculopathy provoked by uric acid. METHODS: We selected 172 patients with IgA nephropathy diagnosed by renal biopsy at Seoul National University Hospital. We adapted the criteria of renal progression as the final value of serum creatinine increased more then twice compared to the value at renal biopsy. RESULTS: Serum uric acid was correlated with the severity of interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy and the presence of artherosclerosis. The incidence of hypertension during follow-up period was not different between low uric acid group and high uric acid group. The high uric acid level was an independent risk factor to renal progression in IgA nephropathy with multivariate analysis regardless of the presence of hypertension or artherosclerosis of renal pathologic finding. The high uric acid level was also a risk factor to renal progression in patients with estimated GFR more than 60 mL/min/1.73m2. CONCLUSION: Serum uric acid was related to the presence of artherosclerosis and the renal progression of IgA nephropathy.

PURPOSE: To describe the associated conditions and clinical significance of lenticulostriate uasculopathy (LSV) as demonstrated by cranial sonography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied 77 LSV cases who between January 1994 and January 1996 had undergone cranial sonography for neonatal asphyxia, seizure, or bulging of anterior fontanel. Cranial sonography was performed with 7 MHz real-time linear and sector transducers using an Acuson computed sonography unit ; examinations were performed in sagittal and coronal planes. Twenty-six LSV patients underwent color Doppler studies, and in 24 of these, color signal and arterial pulse spectral wave were detected. LSV was grouped as one of three types, according to echogenicity : type I (less echogenic than sylvian fissure), type II (similar to sylvian fissure), and type III (more echogenic than sylvian fissures). We retrospectively evaluated associated sonographic abnormalities of the brain, and reviewed medical records for associated conditions and neurologic sequelae. Follow-up sonographic examinations were performed in 23 patients. RESULTS: There were 56 type I cases (73 %), 17 of type II (22 %) and 4 of type III (5 %). Cranial sonographic results were normal in 36 cases (47 %) and abnormal in 41(53 %). Forty-eight cases of nonspecific causes and 29 cases of perinatal and acquired causes accounted for associated conditions. The echogenicity of LSV had not changed in 21 of 23 follow-up cases. Neurologic examinations were performed in 18 cases and in 14 of these (78 %) there was no neurologic sequela. CONCLUSION: LSV in basal ganglia may be associated with nonspecific neonatal conditions, in addition to well known perinatal causes.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine and classify holoprosencephlay with the associated facial abnormalities. METHODS: This was a retrospective study in which were reviewed the sonographic findings in correlation with the clinical and pathologic data of fetuses or neonates identified with holoprosencephaly at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Catholic University in the period 1995-2007. RESULTS: Twelve cases with a Holoprosencephaly were found. Mean gestational age at diagnosis and delivery was 28 weeks of pregnancy (range from 14 to 41 weeks). Modes of delivery were 8 cases of preterm spontaneous delivery, 2 cases of missed abortion, 1 case of normal fullterm spontaneous delivery, and 1 case of full term cesarean delivery. Associated facial anomalies were present in 9/12 cases (75%) which involved with cyclopia, proboscis, cleft lip and palate, ethomocephaly and otocephaly. Among those anomalies, abnormal karyotypes were 3/6 cases (50%). CONCLUSIONS: When a midline brain anomaly is detected by antenatal sonography, accurate sonographic analysis of midline facial defect may allow more definitive diagnosis of holoprosencephaly, and the outcome of affected fetuses often have other major structural abnormalities and nearly always fatal.

Exercise capacity is a valuable trait in horses, and it has been used as a horse selection criterion. Although exercise affects molecular homeostasis and adaptation in horses, the mechanisms underlying these effects are not fully described. This study was carried out to identify changes in the blood profiles of microRNAs (miRNAs) and mRNAs induced by exercise in horse leukocytes. Total RNAs isolated from the peripheral blood leukocytes of four Warmblood horses before and after exercise were subjected to next-generation sequencing (NGS) and microarray analyses to determine the miRNA and mRNA expression profiles, respectively. The expressions of 6 miRNAs, including 4 known and 2 novel miRNAs, were altered by exercise. The predicted target genes of the differentially expressed miRNAs identified by NGS were matched to the exercise-induced mRNAs determined by microarray analysis. Five genes (LOC100050849, LOC100054517, KHDRBS3, LOC100053996, and LOC100062720) from the microarray analysis were matched to the predicted target genes of the 6 miRNAs. The subset of mRNAs and miRNAs affected by exercise in peripheral blood leukocytes may be useful in elucidating the molecular mechanisms of exercise-associated physiology in horses.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to review the current status of intra-arterial (IA) thrombolysis in Korea by conducting a retrospective analysis of the data from multiple domestic centers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The radiologists at each participating institution were asked to fill out case report forms on all patients who had undergone IA recanalization due to acute anterior circulation ischemia. These forms included clinical, imaging and procedure-related information. A central reader analyzed the CT/MR and angiographic results. The rates of successful recanalization, hemorrhagic transformation and functional outcome were obtained. The univariate analyses were performed together with the multivariate analysis. RESULTS: We analyzed the data from 163 patients, and they had been treated at seven institutes. The initial imaging modalities were CT for 46 patients (28%), MR for 63 (39%), and both for 54 (33%). Various mechanical treatment methods were applied together in 50% of the patients. Radiologically significant hemorrhage was noted in 20/155 patients (13%). We found various factors that influenced the recanalization rate and the occurrence of significant hemorrhagic transformations. The favorable outcome rate, reported as modified Rankin Scale < or = 2, was 40%, and the mortality rate was 11%. The factors that predicted a poor functional outcome were old age (p = 0.01), initially severe neurological symptoms (p < 0.0001), MR findings of a wide distribution of lesions (p = 0.001), involvement of the basal ganglia (p = 0.01), performance of procedures after working hours (p = 0.01), failure of recanalization (p = 0.003), contrast extravasation after the procedure (p = 0.007) and significant hemorrhagic transformation (p = 0.002). The subsequent multivariate analysis failed to show any statistically significant variable. CONCLUSION: There was a trend toward increased dependency on MR imaging during the initial evaluation and increased usage of combined pharmacologic/mechanical thrombolysis. The imaging and clinical outcome results of this study were comparable to those of the previous major thrombolytic trials.

Alimentary tract duplications are uncommon congenital abnormalities that usually have an anatomical connection with some part of the gastrointestinal tract and have a common blood supply with the adjacent segment of intestine. A completely isolated duplication cyst (CIDC) is a very rare type of gastrointestinal duplication that does not communicate with the normal bowel segment and possesses its own exclusive blood supply. Only 5 CIDC cases in adults have been reported in the English medical literature. Additionally, only 1 case of mucinous cystadenoma from an infected CIDC of the ileum has been reported. This report describes a 52-year-old male patient with a peritoneal CIDC, which upon curative excision was found to have given rise to an adenocarcinoma. The latter was lined internally with malignant glandular cells and contained a smooth muscular outer layer as determined by microscopic examination of the tissue. We believe that this is the first reported case of an adenocarcinoma originating from a CIDC in an adult.

To reduce swine production costs, a slaughter check system has been developed in countries with an advanced swine industry. Evaluation of lung lesions in carcasses is a critical part of the slaughter check system. This study was performed to collect background information for use in developing a slaughter check system in Korea. Lung tissues and their gross images were collected from slaughterhouses in Gyeonggi-do, Korea. Scoring of the gross lung lesions was performed on the lung images. Histopathologic examination was conducted to classify the pulmonary lesions as bronchopneumonia or interstitial pneumonia. Scores of the gross lung lesions were significantly different between bronchopneumonia and interstitial pneumonia groups (p < 0.001). A 90% confidence interval of gross lung lesion scores was established for the bronchopneumonia group, and the lesion scoring had a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 77.3%. The gross lung lesion scoring test was subjected to a diagnostic distinction evaluation by examining the receiver operating characteristic curve and was appraised as having good discrimination for bronchopneumonia. Establishment of a gross lung lesion scoring test for the diagnosis of bronchopneumonia could be valuable as a screening test of macroscopic bronchopneumonia in swine slaughter check system.
