Purpose:
This study used a structural model to identify organizational characteristics, such as work environment, nursing organizational culture, and manager leadership of general hospital nurses, and to examine the effect of organizational characteristics on turnover intention through organizational silence.
Methods:
Data were collected from July 1, 2017 to August 30, 2017, using structured questionnaires. Participants were nurses in general hospitals with more than 250 beds and less than 500 beds in Busan City and Gyeongsangnam Province. The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 23.0.
Results:
The nursing work environment, external employment opportunities, relationship-oriented culture, and acquiescent and defensive silence directly impacted turnover intention. Additionally, the nursing work environment and external employment opportunities indirectly affected turnover intention through acquiescent silence.
Conclusion
To lower general hospital nurses’ turnover intention, the external environment should be reviewed and continuously compared to provide a better internal nursing work environment. In addition, it is necessary to find a way to lower the acquiescent silence, which can negatively affect the organization, by creating a relationship-oriented culture that emphasizes the relationship between members.

5.Understanding Qi: Its Development and Clinical Application to Nursing Practices.

PURPOSE: This paper analyzed the historical origins of the Qi concept and assesses its possible contributions to the development of complementary therapy and new nursing practices. METHODS: In order to clarify the Qi concept and measure its theoretical/clinical potentials, this study analyzed both historical data and experimental research that adopt and apply the concept. These include modern/contemporary research measuring its effects in promoting mental and physical health. Using the method of cross-cultural comparison, this study analyzed diverse approaches to the Qi concept and sought to find common features among the approaches. RESULTS: A historical, cross-cultural analysis revealed several fundamental similarities between Qi theories that have developed in the east and the holistic concepts that have evolved in the western traditions. Especially, the analysis of the more recent research on the Qi concept shows ample possibilities of its future contributions to the development of new diagnostic applications and the promotion of overall human health. CONCLUSION: The historical study of the Qi concept found some key common factors in the diverse philosophical traditions in the east and the west. Considering the growing popularity of complementary therapy among health professionals and the general public, the Qi concept and its clinical applications are expected to promote human health. In this context, this research contributes to developing new nursing practices based on the concept by clarifying its philosophical origins and theoretical backgrounds.

6.Examining Students’ Experience with the Nursing Management Practicum Based on the Service Design

Purpose:
This study aimed to identify nursing students’ experience with the Nursing Management Practicum based on the service design concept to provide a basis for an ideal subject design.
Methods:
This study was a qualitative research that analyzed the experience of students and their clinical instructors based on the blueprint of Nursing Management Practicum. Focus group interviews were conducted with 13 graduates from two nursing schools and 11 clinical instructors from three hospitals.
Results:
The students went through six stages during the practicum. They met clinical instructors during the ward orientation and learning activities in wards and met school instructors during the general orientation and conference. The students perceived the learning activities and teaching from the clinical instructors in wards as the most important practicum factors.
Conclusion
This study provided information which helped us to understand nursing students’ experience with the Nursing Management Practicum as the time passed by. This information can be used to improve students’ experience with the practicum and convert the subject into a more learner-centered education.
7.Effects of a Spouse’s Aromatherapy Hand Massage on Fatigue, Stress, and a Couple’s Relationship in Pregnant Women

Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a spouse’s aromatherapy hand massage on fatigue, stress, and a couple’s relationship in pregnant women.
Methods:
A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Pregnant women were selected as participants on prenatal education program of 2 health centers. For the experimental group, 28 pregnant women were selected from 1 health centers. Thirty-two pregnant women were assigned to a control group from another. Bergamot, lavender, and sandalwood oil were mixed at a ratio of 1:1:1 and diluted to 1% in a jojoba carrier oil. This oil was used for aromatherapy and had already been identified as not being hazardous to pregnant women. Participants received an aroma hand massage from their spouses 5 times a week for 4 weeks, a total of 20 times. Pre and post written survey were collected from both groups. The data were analyzed by χ2 test, independent t-test, paired t-test and analysis of covariance using IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 25.0 program.Result: There was a statistically significant difference in stress (F=17.39, p<0.001) and the couple’s relationship (F=18.87, p<0.001) between the experimental group and the control group. Fatigue was not significantly different between the 2 groups (F=2.61, p=0.112), but there was a difference pre and post the experimental group (t=-5.30, p<0.001).
Conclusion
These findings indicate that a spouse’s aroma hand massage is effective as a nursing intervention for pregnant women to relieve fatigue and stress, and improve the couple’s relationship.
8.No Association between Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms in Urocanase Domain Containing 1 (UROC1) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) in the Korean Population.

OBJECTIVES: Urocanase domain containing 1 (UROC1) has never been studied in prior studies on autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). UROC1 causes urocanic aciduria, one of the symptoms of which is mental retardation. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the UROC1 gene and ASDs in a Korean population. METHODS: A total of 258 control and 214 patients with ASD were used as subjects of this study. SNPs selected from UROC1 were genotyped using Illumina Golden-Gate Genotyping assay with VeraCode(R) technology. Statistical analysis was performed using SAS and Plink software. RESULTS: We found no association of the 12 SNPs in the UROC1 gene with ASDs in a Korean population. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that the 12 SNPs (11 SNPs and 1 SNP in the intron and 3'UTR region, respectively) in the UROC1 were not associated with ASDs in a Korean population. Further study on the exon region of UROC1 is needed.
