The diagnostic importance of finding an appendicolith in the plain x-ray of the abdomen has been well documented. However, most of the papers so far published have stressed x-ray findings of the preoperative abdomenin acute appendicitis. In the present study we have attempted to correlate incidences of appendicoliths insurgical specimen and plain x-ray of the abdomen. The materials were 37 surgical specimens of the appendix removed for acute appendicits at St. Mary's Hospital, St. Paul's Hospital, Kang Nam Hospital, Holy Family Hospital and Our Lady of Mercy Hospital of Catholic Medical College during the period of 6 months from August 1980. Each surgical specimen was subjected to soft tissue radiography to detect calcified appendicolith. Then the preoperative x-raysof abdomen were retrospectroscopically analysed for the presence of radiographically demonstrable appendicoliths.Our study revealed that in as many as 32% of 37 surgical specimens one or more calcified appendicoliths were demonstrated radiographically whereas only one of these was identified as such in the preoperative x-ray film ofthe abdomen. Such a great discrepancy between the incidences of appendicoliths in the surgical specimen andpreoperative x-ray films of the abdomen are ascribed to (1) relative smallness of appendicoliths (87% of the stones measured less than 1cm in diameter in radiographs of surgical specimen in our series), (2) overlapping of these small stones on the right iliac bone and (3) underpenetrating of the iliac bone area in x-ray films of theabdomen. For improving detctability of appendicoliths therefore it is recommended that the technique of radiography of plain abdomen should be such that a small appendicolity overlying the iliac bone can be brought outof trabecular shadows.

The patients initially underwent epikeratoplasty for keratoconus but a penetrating kerato plasty was required due to the opacity in the cornea. By using of this specimen, which was obtained by trephination the healing process of the host-Ienticule cornea could be examined by electron microscopy and immunofluorescence method. Epithelial ingrowth over the lenticule was well formed by the regeneration of the basement membrane over the Bowman's membrane. However, the poor attachment of the lenticule over the host corneal stroma made the interface easily separated during the sectioning processes. Electron microscopic study revealed the keratocytes in the lenticule stroma vacuolized with large number of degenerated microorganelles. These results suggest that it may take a long time to complete the wound healing of the host-Ienticule interface despite the epithelial ingrowth onto the lenticule was well formed.

Atherosclerotic heart disease is a major source of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in adult populations. To assess the prevalence of anatomical and functional abnormalities of the heart in such patients, we studied total 50 subjects with atherosclerotic heart disease by echocardiography and compared with 27 control subjects. We found significant change(p<0.05) of aortic root dimension, left ventricular mass, mitral valve E-F slope, E-point septal separation, and functional measurements show significant change in ejection fraction and fractional shortening of left ventricle. Characteristically, abnormal septal movement reveals in 70% of patients including paradoxical, flat & diminished, hyperactive motion, and among them paradoxical movement is the most frequent. Also left ventricular posterior wall movement is abnormal in 30% of the patient group. The prevalence of echocardiographic abnormalities is 80 percentile of total, which include 30 percentile subjects with only echocardiographic abnormalities without abnormality in 12-lead ECG, chest X-ray and laboratory findings. And these abnormalities can be detected well by echocardiography before they were otherwise apparent.

PURPOSE: This study was done to identity the degree of instructional motivation and response after application of CAI in the student nurses' fundamental nursing course. METHOD: The subjects of this study were 77 student nurses and the data was collected from October, 7th to 17th in 1997. The examination sheet for cognitive style and a questionnaire to evaluate the degree of instructional motivation were used to collect data. RESULT: 1) It was found that the degree of instructional motivation of the learner was higher in the CAI class.(134.23/170) 2) After CAI, the learners expressed relatively higher satisfaction in understanding, interest, degree of difficulty, number of problems, icons, and extra information. 3) It was found that 53 learners(68.8%) were field independent-cognitive learners and 24 learners(31.2%) were field dependent-cognitive learners. 4) Among the instructional responses according to the cognitive behavior of the learner after CAI, there were significant differences in reasons for understanding the computer program, interest in the computer program class, and the number of students assigned to each computer. 5) There were no significant difference between cognitive style and instructional motivation. CONCLUSION: The CAI effect for nursing students fundamental nursing course have been positive evaluated. CAI in nursing education is becoming very available and needs to develop effective CAI and use not only fundamental nursing course but also another nursing education programs.

The Cornelia de Lange syndrome is characterized by severe growth and mental retardation; typical facies; low-pitched, weak, growling cry, and various bone abnormalities, as was first described by Cornelia de Lange in 1933. On the other hand, Legg-Perthes disease is the condition, in which avascular necrosis of the femoral head develops, as was first described by Legg, Calve and Perthes in 1910. Review of the worlds literature disclosed only one case of Legg-Perthes disease associated with Cornelia de Lange syndrome. We experienced a case of Legg-Perthes disease associated with Cornelia de Lange syndrome in a 8 years old boy, which was treated surgically for Legg-Perthes disease. A brief review of literature was made.

Intracranial lipoma is a rare condition, though lipoma in other sites can be found throughout the body. Many authors have reported intracranial lipoma since Rokitansky and Soman who described first in autopsy and living patient respectively. Intracranial lipoma can be diagnosed simply be simple skull and computed tomography. The authors experienced three cases of intracranial lipoma diagnosed by simple skull, tomography, cerebral angiography and computed tomography, and reported with a brief review of the literature.
