2.Radiographic normal range of condylar movement of mandible

It is the purpose of this article to determine various normal anatomic measurements of temporomandibular joint and normal range of condylar movement using relatively simple X-ray equipment and radiographic technique in consideration of popular clinical application. Author's cases condisted of 100 clinically normal adult males and temporomandibular joint radiographs of 3 serial position so condylar head were taken by transcranial obliquelateral pojection in each case. The serial positions are centric occlusion, 1 inch opening and maximal opening position. The results were as follows; 1. In cetric occlusion, the length between the condylar head and glenoidfossa was 2.23±0.58mm in anterior part, 3.55±0.80mm in upper part and 2.76±0.72mm in posterior part. 2. Incentric occlusion, the angle (alpha) between the horizontal standard line(AB) and anterior slope (BC) was 37.22±3.87 degrees. 3. 3.MR Findings of Knee Injuries in Skiing: Relation with the Mechanism of Injury.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the MR findings of knee injuries in skiing and to explain the mechanism of injury with MR findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed MR findings of 18 patients with history of knee injuries in skiing. The MR images were evaluated retrospectively to identify the ligament injuries, bone lesions and meniscal injuries. RESULTS: Ligament injuries were seen in 16 patients, bone contusions in 16 patients, meniscal lesions in two patients. The most common group of injury was anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and roedial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries with bone contusion on posterior lip of the lateral tibial plateau (LTP). The second common group of injury was isolated ACL injury with bone contusions on the lateral fernoral condyle (LFC) and posterior lip of the LTP. We considered that the mechanism of injury of the former group may be correlated with the valgus torque with secondary anterior displacement of the tibia and the latter group may be correlated with the pivot shift phenomenon. CONCLUSION: MR may play an important role in the diagnosis of knee injuries in skiing and its findings may explain the mechanism of injury.

7.Prediction of Normal Values of Systolic Time Intervals.

In order to establish the predicted normal values of the systolic time intervals the duration of the systolic time intervals measured from simultaneous recordings of the electrocardiogram, the phonocardiogram and the carotid pulse tracing. The subjects studied were 160 healthy males and 160 females. The mean ages of males and females were 29 and 31 years old, respectively. The transformation period was not closely related to heart rate, and its mean values for males and females were 58 and 56 msec., respectively, and the mean for males and females combined was 57 msec. The remainder of the systolic time intervals, however, showed a significant linear and inverse relation to heart rate. Thus, based upon these data regression equations for the prediction of the normal values of electromechanical systole, left ventricular ejection time, mechinical systole, precjection period andisovolumiccontraction time for males, females, and males and females combined were obtained.

8.In vitro 31P NMR spectroscopic assessment of the endurance and recovery capacity of skeletal muscle: comparison between the sedentaries and canoe athletes.

In vivo 31P NMR spectroscopic study of forearm wrist flexor muscles was performed in two groups of volunteers composed respectively of 6 sedentaries and 6 canoe athletes. A continuous isometric contraction of endurance exercises was adopted in oder to assess the endurance capacity and recovery potential of skeletal muscles. Differences in high energy phosphorus metabolism between the sedentaries and athletes were evaluated with and emphasis on the intracellular pH and Pi/PCr ratio as indicators of high energy phosphorus metabolism. There were no differences of baseline pH and Pi/PCr ratio between the two groups. The athletes sustained the exercise at more acidic intracellular pH and at a higher Pi/PCr ratio of intracellular conditions for an all-out than did the sedentaries. The recovery rate of pH showed no difference between the two groups. There was a tendency of faster recovery of Pi/PCr in athletes showing half recovery time(T1/2) of 39.0±3.0 seconds as compared to that of sedentaries (55.7±7.5 seconds). The recovery rate of Pi/PCr as a function of Pi/PCr ratio at a given period of time was significantly faster in athletes than in sedentaries (P<0.001). The correlation coefficient of the recovery rate of Pi/PCr against the Pi/PCr ratio was 0.985 and 0.914 respectively for the athletes and sedentaries. The pH and the Pi/PCR ratio at an all-out state can be used as indicators of endurance capacity and the recovery rate of Pi/PCr, as a reovery potential of skeletal muscles.

9.Synaptic Diversity in the Neostriatum of the Cat.

An attempt has been made to discriminate synaptic diversity in the neostriatum of the cat with emphasis on the characteristic structures of axon terminals and postsynaptic profiles. The differentiation of the axon terminals was based on the size and shape of synaptic vesicles in the axoplasm. Three types of axon terminals could be differentiated: Type I, the terminals contained small round (45 nm in diameter) vesicles; type II, the terminals with large pleomorphic (50 nm) vesicles; and type III, the terminals contained flattened (45 x 25 nm) vesicles. The type I terminals were making asymmetrical or symmetrical synapses in contact with the somata, dendrites and dendritic spines of neurons in the neostriatum, and a few type I terminals making asymmetrical or symmetrical contact with axons were also observed. The type II and III terminals were making symmetrical contact with the somata and dendrites of neostriatal neurons. A few type II terminals formed at the node of Ranvier of myelinated nerve fibers were making symmetrical contact with large dendrites. Additionally, dendro-dendritic and serial syanpses were rarely found in the neostriatum. In the serial synapses composed of axo-dendritic and dendro-dendritic synapses, the type I terminals making asymmetrical contact and the type II making symmetrical contact were identified.

10.Associations between Estrogen Receptor Gene Polymorphisms and Endometriosis.

Endometriosis is common estrogen-related gynecological diseases related to interactions of dietary, genetic causes, social and environmental factors. The high prevalence approaches 5-15% in premenopausal women and 30% in infertile women, and it is unusual to occur after the onset of menopause. In this review, the gene polymorphisms of estrogen receptor (ER) alpha and betare-lated to the risks of endometriosis were investigated through statistical analysis by using the gene polymorphism for the risks of the disease examined trends. The polymorphism of ERalpha-PvuII in Europe tends to increase the risk of endometriosis and, ERalpha-XbaI polymorphisms in both Asia and Europe have a slightly increased risk of endometriosis. In the case of ERbeta-RsaI, the risk of endometriosis increases in Brazil, while the polymorphism of ERbeta-AluI reduces the disease risks in Asia. Polymorphism studies on ER associated with the risk of endometriosis in Asia and Europe showed that those polymorphisms may be used to predict the high or low risks of endometriosis, and potentially used for prevention, therapy or prognosis of endometriosis. Further studies on interacting with more related genes and environmental factors may provide a better understanding of associations between estrogen receptor gene polymorphisms and endometriosis.
