5.Dupuytren's Contracture: Report 3 cases

Three cases of Dupuytrens contracture which developed in hands were reported along with review of literatures. Partial fasciectomy was done as the choice of treatment for them to improve impairment of function of the hands. No attributable causes for the developement of the disease were found.

6.The Effect of 5-Fluorouraci1 on the Activity of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium in Vitro.

Fluorouracil Was effective in controlling the in vitro cellular proliferation. When given with cultured human retinal pigment epithelial cell, fluoroirracil decreased the cellular activity of the cultured retinal pigment epithelial cell. The attachment and migratien of the cultured retinal pigment epithelial cell was markedly reduced after repeated treatment with fluorouracil. Electron micrographs of the cultured retinal pigment epithelial cell given with fluorouracil showed marked reduction of cytoplasmic pseudopodia, rupture of plasma membrane, loss of microorganelles and eventual cytolysis. Based on these data, low dose fluorouracil may be an effective inhibitor of the in vitro proliferation of the retinal pigment epithelium.

7.Human Rights Sensitivity, Advocacy Attitudes, and Advocacy Interventions for Mentally Disabled People in Psychiatric Nurses and Nursing Students.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to verify the relationship between human rights sensitivity, advocacy attitudes, and advocacy interventions for mentally disabled people in psychiatric nurses and nursing students. METHODS: This is a descriptive study. Using questionnaires, data were collected from 206 participants who were recruited from one mental health institute, one general hospital, and one university in S city. Data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient using SPSS/WIN 22. RESULTS: The mean age was 33.8±12.89. The mean scores of human rights sensitivity, advocacy attitudes, and advocacy intervention was 37.7±18.09, 53.7±5.67, and 47.4±7.08, respectively. Human rights sensitivity correlated significantly with advocacy attitudes (r=.25, p=.020) and advocacy intervention (r=.17, p=.015). Also, there was a significant positive correlation between advocacy attitudes and advocacy intervention (r=.44, p<.001). CONCLUSION: These findings highlight that advocacy attitudes and advocacy interventions for mentally disabled people could be improved by increasing human rights sensitivity. Tailored education programs will be effective in the field of mental health care services to increase human rights sensitivity.

8.Interaction of Attachment Complex and Anchoring Fibrils following Corneal Culture.

This study was performed to elucidate the structural changes of the attachment complex in the cultured cornea. The three normal corneal tissues were used in this study. The ultrastructural changes of the attachment complex were observed by electron microscopy in one corneal tissue which was not cultured and cultured for 6 days and two corneal tissues which were cultured 10 days and 20 days, respectively. The cornea cultured for 6 days showed changes in the electron density of the hemidesmosome. The basal lamina was focally detached from the cytoplasmic wall of the basal epithelial cells in the cornea cultured for 10 days. The anchoring fibrils within the nuded corneal stroma, which was cultured for 20 days, were markedly decreased in number. These findings suggest that the normal basal epithelial cell, hemidesmosomes and basal lamina might be the essential factors to maintain the networks of normal anchoring fibrils in corneal stroma.

9.Morphological changes of the sensory retina following the occlusion of ciliary arteries in rabbits.

The whole retina, except for the medullary fiber zone in a rabbit eye, is supplied by choroidal circulation. Therefore, the histopathological changes of the sensory retina due to choroidal circulatory disturbance in rabbits may be comparable to that of the human sensory retina in the case of ophthalmic artery occlusion. This study was carried out to evaluate the histopathological changes of the ischemic retina secondary to the occlusion of choroidal circulation. The experimental occlusion of all posterior ciliary arteries and anterior ciliary arteries in the horizontal rectus muscle of rabbit eyes was performed and the subsequent histopathological changes of the sensory retina were observed by transmission electron microscopy. The morphological changes of the sensory retina following the occlusion of the ciliary arterial system are as follows: severe loss of the inner and outer segments of the photoreceptor, mild to moderate degeneration of the ganglion cells, and excellent preservation of the Muller's cell fibers and the extension of the cytoplasmic villous processes to the cytoplasmic vacuolar spaces of other degenerated cells. These findings indicate that the Muller's fibers in the ischemic condition of retina might contribute to the formation of gliosis or scarring of a damaged retina.

10.Morphological Characteristics and Intercellular Connections of Corneal Keratocytes.

PURPOSE: To investigate the morphological characteristics of keratocytes and the interconnection of keratocytes with adjacent keratocytes using the flat preparation method and scanning electron microscopy with a frontal section of the human corneal stroma. METHODS: The thin, corneal collagen lamellae were carefully dissected from the cornea (n=7), which had been stained by the flat preparation method. The remaining tissue was fixed in 3% glutaraldehyde and observed by transmission electron microscopy following the frontal section. RESULTS: The flat preparation revealed the corneal fibroblasts between the lamellae of the collagen fibers and showed that the ramifying cellular processes of the keratocytes were in contact with the cytoplasmic processes or cell bodies of neighboring fibroblasts. Two types of discrete subpopulations of keratocytes were identified: a smaller, cellular type of keratocyte with spindle-shaped nucleus with heterochromatin, and a larger, cellular type with a large indented nucleus with relatively scanty cytoplasm. Collagen fibers ran parallel to each other toward the fenestration of the cytoplasmic wall of the keratocyte. CONCLUSIONS: These flat preparation method results showed that the keratocytes within the corneal stroma are interconnected with the adjacent keratocytes, which indicates the presence of a functional communicating network through the keratocyte circuits within the stroma. A smaller, cellular type of keratocyte with spindle-shaped nucleus was morphologically differentiated from a larger, cellular type with a large, indented nucleus by flat preparation and transmission electron microscopy.
