6.The Effect of 5-Fluorouraci1 on the Activity of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium in Vitro.

Fluorouracil Was effective in controlling the in vitro cellular proliferation. When given with cultured human retinal pigment epithelial cell, fluoroirracil decreased the cellular activity of the cultured retinal pigment epithelial cell. The attachment and migratien of the cultured retinal pigment epithelial cell was markedly reduced after repeated treatment with fluorouracil. Electron micrographs of the cultured retinal pigment epithelial cell given with fluorouracil showed marked reduction of cytoplasmic pseudopodia, rupture of plasma membrane, loss of microorganelles and eventual cytolysis. Based on these data, low dose fluorouracil may be an effective inhibitor of the in vitro proliferation of the retinal pigment epithelium.

7.Human Rights Sensitivity, Advocacy Attitudes, and Advocacy Interventions for Mentally Disabled People in Psychiatric Nurses and Nursing Students.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to verify the relationship between human rights sensitivity, advocacy attitudes, and advocacy interventions for mentally disabled people in psychiatric nurses and nursing students. METHODS: This is a descriptive study. Using questionnaires, data were collected from 206 participants who were recruited from one mental health institute, one general hospital, and one university in S city. Data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient using SPSS/WIN 22. RESULTS: The mean age was 33.8±12.89. The mean scores of human rights sensitivity, advocacy attitudes, and advocacy intervention was 37.7±18.09, 53.7±5.67, and 47.4±7.08, respectively. Human rights sensitivity correlated significantly with advocacy attitudes (r=.25, p=.020) and advocacy intervention (r=.17, p=.015). Also, there was a significant positive correlation between advocacy attitudes and advocacy intervention (r=.44, p<.001). CONCLUSION: These findings highlight that advocacy attitudes and advocacy interventions for mentally disabled people could be improved by increasing human rights sensitivity. Tailored education programs will be effective in the field of mental health care services to increase human rights sensitivity.

8.Impression Cytology of Herpetic Simplex Keratitis in Rabbits.

PURPOSE: To use impression cytology to examine the structural changes in corneal epithelial cells infected with the herpes simplex virus in rabbit eyes. METHODS: Corneal surfaces of 7 rabbits were scratched using a 25-gauge needle. Herpes simplex virus (type 1, Kos strain) was inoculated to the injured cornea. As the corneal diseases were observed using slit lamp biomicroscopy, impression cytology was performed for 18 days after inoculation. Specimens were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and examined using optical microscopy. RESULTS: Corneal lesions consisted mainly of round epithelial cells, inflammatory cells, ballooning cells, multinucleated giant cells, and various inclusion bodies. Over time, the corneal epithelial cells peeled away as a result of corneal edema in the corneal lesions. Dendritic lesions were also observed. In the recovery phase, the number of detached cells and infiltrated inflammatory cells decreased. CONCLUSIONS: It was presumed that dendritic lesions might have been formed at the scratched cornea region, thereby aggravating the epithelial cells falling off as a result of the infiltration of inflammatory cells. These cytopathologic effects occur in experimental herpes simplex keratitis.

9.A Case of Prurigo Pigmentosa.

Prurigo pigmentosa is a chronic pruritic inflammatory dermaoss characterized by erythematous papules in a reticulated pattern that resolve leaving a reticulated, mottled hyperpigmentation. Most cases have been reported from Japan. Two cases of prurigo pigmentosa have been reported in Korean women. We experienced a casc of prurigo pigmentosa in a Korean man of 20 years of age. Histopathological findings of reddish papule showed exocytosis, sponsiosis, intraepidermal vesicles, hydropic degeneration of basal cells in the epidermis, and hyphohistiocytic infiltration in the upper dermis. Direct irnmunofluorescence was negetive. Therapy with dapsone, 50 mg given daily, resulted in a rerinable regression of the reddish papules. The daily dose of clapsone was reduced to 25mg; however, no new reddish, pruritic papules have appeared.

10.Axoplasmic Transport of Herpes Simplex Virus Co-Cultured with Ciliary Nerve.

PURPOSE: To investigate the replication of HSV within cultured cell and axonal transport of HSV within the axon of the ciliary nerve following the injection of HSV into a cultured ciliary nerve. METHODS: The explant of the ciliary nerve was cultured with a medium containing nerve growth factor for 30 days when the suspension of HSV-1 (Kos strain) was introduced into the culture dish to co-culture with the ciliary nerve. The ciliary nerve was examined with transmission electron microscopy 30 days after culture and 6 days after co-culture with HSV. RESULTS: The ultrastructure of the explant of the ciliary nerve co-cultured with HSV showed that the viral capsid acquired a viral envelope and viral core, and a capsid and inclusion body within the nucleus. The enveloped virus was scattered within the vesicles of the cytoplasm. The virus-like particles were identified at the axonal fibers. CONCLUSIONS: The co-culture of the explant of the ciliary nerve and HSV showed the replicative process of the HSV within the cultured cell. The virus-like particles within the axon showed the evidence axonal transport of the virus under culture conditions.
