Korean Journal of Urology 1984;25(4):533-536
Nocturnal penile tumescence monitoring has gained wide acceptance in differential diagnosis of impotence. We developed a modified stamp technique which use a strip of stamps, each 2.2cm by 2.5cm, and the vinyl plaster for snugger wrapping and sealing of stamps around the penile shaft. This is a simple, time-saving and useful screening test for organic impotence.

Cholangiocarcinoma is a form of adenocarcinoma arising from the intrahepatic or extrahepatic biliary epithelium. Apparent predisposing factors include some chronic hepatobiliary parasitic infsttations, congenital anomalies with ectatic ducts, sclerosing cholangitis and chronic ulcerative colitis and occupational exposure to possible biliary tract carcinogens. Patients with cholangiocarcinoma usually present with biliary obstruction, painless jaundice, pruritus, weight loss and acholic stools. Because the obstructing process is gradua1, the cholangiocarcinoma is often far advanced by the time it presents clinically. The diagnosis is most frequently made by cholangiography following ultrasound demonstration of dilated intrahepatic bile ducts. We report a case of common bile duct cancer spreading to gallbladder and common hepatic duct along the biliary mucosal epitherium and submucosal tissue in 68-year-old female patient along with a review of literature.

This study was performed to observe the present status of intestinal parasitic infections in a remote island, Yondo, located in southern part of Jeonranam-do(province), Korea. In February and May 1988, total 1,011 individual stool samples were collected and examined for intestinal helminths and protozoa using formalin-ether centrifugal sedimentation technique. The results are summarized as follows: Of 1,011 ingabitants examined, 398(39.4%) were positive for intestinal parasites. Helminth positives were 372(36.8%), and protozoan cyst positives were 56(5.5%). Ten species of parasites were found. Trichuris trichiura revealed the highest infection rate of 27.5%, Ascaris lumbricoides 17.4%, Taenia sp. 5.8%, Entamoeba coli 3.3%, Giardia lamblia 1.5%, Endolimax nana 0.8%, Hymenolepis nana 0.4%, hookworm 0.2%, Trichostrongylus orientalis 0.2%, and Entamoeba histolytica 0.2%, respectively. The female group showed higher positive rate (44.0%) than males (34.7%). Also, higher positive rates were observed among adults as compared with the group younger than 10 years old. Average value of E.P.G. was 1,876(range 200-17,800) in A. lumbricoides positives, and 327(range 200-1,600) in T. trichiura positive cases. In helminth egg positive cases, single infection was 63.4%, double infection 34.7%, and triple infection 1.9%, respectively. Among protozoan cyst positives, single infection was 94.6%, and double infection was 5.4%. The present study revealed that the prevalence of intestinal parasites among inhabitants in Yondo island is still so high that special control measures should be performed.

Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society 2004;36(1):72-74
We report a case of cervical spinal epidural abcess due to Salmonella group D. A 58-year-old man complained of progressive neck pain and right arm weakness with fever. Clinical and radiographic findings including cervical magnetic resonance(MR) image showed paraspinal soft tissue inflammation of neck and abcesses in prevertebral and epidural space at C3-5 level. The patient underwent a C4 corpectomy and adjacent diskectomy and continous irrigation suction drainage. A MR image taken at second postoperative day revealed diffuse cord swelling from C2 to T1 suggesting edema and/or myelitis and then laminectomy from C3 to C6 was performed immediately to decompress the spinal cord. The patient recovered excellently and the abscess culture revealed Salmonella group D.

Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society 2004;36(3):224-228
OBJECTIVE: The ubiquitous human polyomavirus, JC virus(JCV) is the etiologic agent of the fatal demyelinating central nervous system(CNS) disease, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy(PML). Recent studies have reported the detection of the JCV in samples derived from several type of human neural tumors and suggested the possible association of JCV with CNS tumors. Here we report for the first time, the presence of JCV in Korean glioblastoma multiforme(GM) patients. METHODS: Two Korean GM patients were assayed for JCV. To detect JCV, we performed immunohistochemical analysis using anti-JCV and anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein(GFAP) serum and polymerase chain reaction(PCR) using primers. RESULTS: JCV antigen was detected in cytoplasm abundantly in cells of this tumor case. Also, GFAP immunoreactivity was predominantly observed in cytoplasm of the cells that were morphologically bizarred appearing astrocytes in GM. In addition, both of the large T antigen gene and the VP1 gene were detected and this result correspond with previous result of immunohistochemistry. CONCLUSION: Although it is not certain that GM is associated with the JCV, we are attempted to elucidate the possible implication of JCV in the tumorigenesis of certain human malignant gliomas.

Korean Journal of Infectious Diseases 1998;30(3):312-315
Splenic abscess is an uncommon but frequently fatal condition. Signs and symptoms are variable and do not always include left upper quadrant pain or tenderness. Unexplained thrombocytosis in a septic patient with persistent left pleural effusion is suggestive of splenic abscess. We report a case of splenic abscess with complicated multiple fistulas by Klebsiella pneumoniae which was successfully managed by antibiotic therapy, and percutaneous catheter drainage.

Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2007;37(6):957-965
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the degrees of cellular phone usage among middle school students and to identify discriminating factors of addictive use of cellular phones among sociodemographic and psychological variables. METHODS: From 123 middle schools in Busan, potential participants were identified through stratified random sampling and 747 middle school students participated in the study. The data was collected from December 1, 2004 to December 30, 2004. Descriptive and discriminant analyses were used. RESULTS: Fifty seven percent of the participants were male and 89.7% used cellular phones at school. The participants were grouped into three groups depending on the levels of the cellular phone usage: addicted (n=117), dependent (n=418), non-addicted (n=212). Within the three groups, two functions were produced and only one function was significant, discriminating the addiction group from non-addiction group. Additional discriminant analysis with only two groups produced one function that classified 81.2% of the participants correctly into the two groups. Impulsiveness, anxiety, and stress were significant discriminating factors. CONCLUSION: Based on the findings of this study, developing intervention programs focusing on impulsiveness, anxiety and stress to reduce the possible addictive use of cellular phones is suggested.

Journal of the Korean Society of Coloproctology 2012;28(6):315-320
PURPOSE: Placenta growth factor (PlGF) is a member of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family. PlGF is implicated in several pathologic processes, including the growth and spread of cancer and tumor angiogenesis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression and the clinical implications of PlGF in colorectal cancer. METHODS: In order to ascertain the clinical significance of PlGF expression in colorectal cancer, the researcher analyzed the expression pattern of PlGF by using an immunohistochemical method and attempted to establish if a relationship existed between PlGF expression and microvessel density (MVD), and subsequently between PlGF expression and the predicted prognosis. A total of 83 patients with colorectal cancer were included for immunohistochemical staining. Clinicopathological characteristics were defined according to the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) criteria of the Union for International Cancer Control. Clinicopathologic factors, such as age, sex, histological types of tumors, tumor cell grade, TNM stage, lymphovascular invasion, and lymph-node metastasis, were reviewed. RESULTS: In this study, the PlGF protein expression level was significantly correlated with MVD, patient survival, and clinicopathological factors such as lymph-node metastasis, TNM staging, lymphatic invasion and vascular invasion. CONCLUSION: PlGF may be an important angiogenic factor in human colorectal cancer, and in this study, PlGF expression level was significantly correlated with positive lymph-node metastases, tumor stage, and patient survival. These findings suggest that PlGF expression correlates with disease progression and may be used as a prognostic marker for colorectal cancer.
