Background: The clinical implications of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein autoantibodies (MOG-Abs) are increasing. Establishing MOG-Ab assays is essential for effectively treating patients with MOG-Abs. We established an in-house cell-based assay (CBA) to detect MOG-Abs to identify correlations with patients’ clinical characteristics. Methods: We established the CBA using HEK 293 cells transiently overexpressing fulllength human MOG, tested it against 166 samples from a multicenter registry of central nervous system (CNS) inflammatory disorders, and compared the results with those of the Oxford MOG-Ab-based CBA and a commercial MOG-Ab CBA kit. We recruited additional patients with MOG-Abs and compared the clinical characteristics of MOG-Ab-associated disease (MOGAD) with those of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). Results: Of 166 samples tested, 10 tested positive for MOG-Abs, with optic neuritis (ON) being the most common manifestation (4/15, 26.7%). The in-house and Oxford MOG-Ab CBAs agreed for 164/166 (98.8%) samples (κ = 0.883, P < 0.001); two patients (2/166, 1.2%) were only positive in our in-house CBA, and the CBA scores of the two laboratories correlated well (r = 0.663, P < 0.001). The commercial MOG-Ab CBA kit showed one falsenegative and three false-positive results. The clinical presentation at disease onset differed between MOGAD and NMOSD; ON was the most frequent manifestation in MOGAD, and transverse myelitis was most frequent in NMOSD. Conclusions The in-house CBA for MOG-Abs demonstrated reliable results and can potentially be used to evaluate CNS inflammatory disorders. A comprehensive, long-term study with a large patient population would clarify the clinical significance of MOG-Abs.

Background: Although neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is known to be a rare disease, its prevalence and incidence have not yet been studied in Korea. We performed a population-based study to examine the prevalence and incidence of NMOSD in Korea using data from the Korean National Health Insurance (NHI) claims database. Methods: Data from 2013 to 2017 were obtained, with a washout period set as 2013 and 2014. The prevalence and incidence of NMOSD in 2016 and 2017 were calculated using population census data. Subjects were divided into 5 groups at 15-year intervals, depending on the age at which the diagnostic code was entered. The relative risk (RR) for each age group was compared with the oldest (≥ 60 years) age group. Results: The overall prevalence was estimated to be 3.36 and 3.56 per 100,000 individuals, with an incidence of 0.41 and 0.65 per 100,000 individuals-year in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The mean age was 43.08 (standard deviation, 14.56) years, and the ratio of male to females was 1:4.7. The incidence was higher in female individuals aged between 30 and 59 years (RR, 2.8–3.05; P < 0.05). Conclusion Nationwide prevalence of NMOSD in Korea was 3.36 and 3.56/100,000 and its incidence was 0.41 and 0.65/100,000-year in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

The purpose of this study is to propose learning objectives in social dental hygiene by analyzing and reviewing learning objectives in oral health administration area of the existing public oral health. This study is a cross-sectional study. The subjects of the study selected with convenience extraction were 15 members of the social dental hygiene subcommittee of the Korean Society of Dental Hygiene Science. Data collection was conducted by self-filling questionnaire. The research tool is from 48 items of A division in the book of learning objectives in the dental hygienist national examination, and this study classified each of them into ‘dental hygiene job relevance’, ‘dental hygiene competency relevance’, ‘timeliness’, and ‘value discrimination of educational goal setting’ to comprise 192 items. Also, to collect expert opinions, this study conducted Delphi survey on 7 academic experts. Statistical analysis was performed using the IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 23.0 program (IBM Co., Armonk, NY, USA). Recoding was performed according to the degree of relevance of each learning objective and frequency analysis was performed. This study removed 18 items from the whole learning objectives in the dental hygienist national examination in the oral health administration area of public oral health. Fifteen revisions were made and 15 existing learning objectives were maintained. Forty-five learning objectives were proposed as new social dental hygiene learning objectives. The topics of learning objectives are divided into social security and medical assistance, oral health care system, oral health administration, and oral health policy. As a result of this study, it was necessary to construct the learning objectives of social dental hygiene in response to changing situation at the time. The contents of education should be revised in order of revision of learning objectives, development of competency, development of learning materials, and national examination.

PURPOSE: This study was performed to explore factors that influence attitudes toward terminal care in nursing students. METHODS: Data were collected using a self-reported questionnaire filled by 175 nursing students at a university in a metropolitan city B. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression with the SPSS/WIN 22.0 program. RESULTS: Attitudes toward terminal care in nursing students was significantly correlated with communication competence (r=0.438, P<0.001), spirituality (r=0.374, P<0.001), and gratitude (r=0.318, P<0.001). Communication competence explained 18.7% of the variance in attitudes toward terminal care. CONCLUSION: The study shows communication competence is an important factor for attitudes toward terminal care in nursing students. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a communication competence enhancement program to foster nursing students with appropriate attitudes toward terminal care.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the factors affecting spirituality in nursing students. METHODS: A total of 247 nursing students participated in the study. Data were analyzed by frequencies, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple stepwise regression via SPSS WIN 18.0. RESULTS: The mean scores for hope, gratitude, and spirituality were above-average. However, there were significant mean differences in spirituality according to religion, religious activity, voluntary service, satisfaction with the nursing field, and motivation for entering a college of nursing. Spirituality positively correlated with hope and gratitude. Significant predictors of spirituality included hope, gratitude, voluntary service and religious activity. The regression model explained 51.3% of perceived spirituality. CONCLUSION: To improve spirituality among nursing students, nursing educators should develop educational intervention programs to promote hope and gratitude, and support participation in voluntary service and religious activity.

PURPOSE: To compare immunogenicity and reactogenicity of a combined diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis-inactivated poliovirus vaccine (DTPa-IPV, Infanrix(TM) IPV, GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals) with co-administration of commercially available DTPa and IPV vaccines at separate injection sites (DTPa+IPV). METHODS: A total of 458 infants aged 8-12 weeks were randomized to receive three-dose primary vaccination at 2, 4 and 6 months with DTPa-IPV or DTPa+IPV. Blood samples were collected pre and post vaccination for measurement of immune responses. Reactogenicity was assessed following each dose using diary cards. RESULTS: One month post-dose 3, seroprotection rates for anti-diphtheria, anti-tetanus and anti-poliovirus types 1, 2 and 3 were > or =99.5% and vaccine response rates to pertussis antigens were at least 98.6% in both DTPa-IPV and DTPa + IPV groups. Non-inferiority between the groups was demonstrated based on pre-defined statistical criteria. Incidences of both local and systemic symptoms were within the same range across both groups with grade 3 symptoms reported following no more than 4.3% of DTPa-IPV doses and 4.5% of DTPa + IPV doses. Two serious adverse events (both pyrexia) after DTPa-IPV administration were considered vaccine-related. Both infants recovered fully. CONCLUSION: Combined DTPa-IPV vaccine was immunogenic and well tolerated when used as a three-dose primary vaccination course in Korean infants. DTPa-IPV could be incorporated into the Korean vaccination schedule, reducing the number of injections required to complete primary immunization.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Noncardiac chest pain (NCCP) mainly results from esophageal lesions in the developed world. By contrast, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a less frequent cause of NCCP than peptic ulcer disease in China and Japan. Therefore, both esophageal lesions and stomach and duodenal lesions are likely to be important causes of NCCP in Korea. We used upper gastrointestinal endoscopy to evaluate lesions of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum in NCCP patients after cardiac chest pain was ruled out by coronary angiography (CAG). METHODS: From the patients who underwent CAG between 2004 and 2008, we identified 89 patients who had normal CAG or minimal disease. We retrospectively analyzed the endoscopic findings of these 89 patients who were diagnosed with NCCP. RESULTS: At endoscopy for the 89 patients, the percentages of GERD, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer were 20.2% (n=18), 14.6% (n=13), and 3.3% (n=3) respectively. Of the 16 cases diagnosed as peptic ulcer, 11 were evaluated by biopsy or the Campylobacter-like organism (CLO) test for suspected Helicobacter pylori infection. Six (54%) cases were positive for H. pylori and five (46%) were negative. CONCLUSIONS: In Korea, the incidence of peptic ulcer disease (17.9%) as a cause of NCCP is similar to that of GERD (20.2%). Consequently, we should perform endoscopy to determine the cause of NCCP.

Peritoneal mesothelioma is an unusual disease which diffusely involves the peritoneal surface. The incidence is approximately one per 1,000,000, and one fifth to one third of all mesothelioma are peritoneal in origin. Asbestos exposure is linked to the development of peritoneal mesothelioma as a significant etiology, but further investigation shoud be conducted. Abdominal sonography, abdominal CT and cytologic examination of ascitic fluid are used to confirm the diagnosis, but rarely provides proper diagnosis. Laparoscopy with biopsy is the most common diagnostic method for definite diagnosis of mesothelioma. Cytoreductive surgery and intraperitoneal chemotherapy have been suggested for better survival since the median survival after the initial diagnosis is near to 50 months. This report describes a case of 73-years-old male patient presented with abdominal pain and distension. This patient had not been exposed to asbestos. Abdominal sonography and CT showed massive ascites, multiple omental masses and peritoneal thickening. It was difficult to distinguish peritoneal mesothelioma from carcinomatosis. Laparoscopy and peritoneal biopsy was conducted and immunostaining examination confirmed the diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma.

BACKGROUND: There is a little information about the effect of selective vestibular stimulation on the expression of activity-dependent metabolic markers in the vestibular nuclei. The purpose of this study was to evaluate effect of afferent excitation of the horizontal semicircular canal on expression of phosphorylated ERK1/2 (pERK1/2) and cFos proteins in the vestibular nuclei. METHODS: The horizontal semicircular canal of Sprague-Dawley rats was selectively stimulated by using the sinusoidal horizontal stimulator with 10-minute duration of stimulation. Conventional immunohistochemical method was used to visualize pERK1/2 or cFos immunoreactive neurons in the vestibular nuclei following rotation. RESULTS: Five minutes after stimulation of the horizontal semicircular canal there was a high expression of pERK1/2 protein in the medial vestibular nucleus among 4 major subnuclei of the central vestibular nuclear complex. On the contrary, immunoreactivity of cFos protein was observed in the medial and inferior vestibular nucleus 2 hours after horizontal sinusoidal rotation. The lateral vestibular nucleus was free from the expression of pERK1/2 and cFos proteins in response to excitation of the horizontal semicircular canal. However, in the vestibular nuclei of unilaterally labyrinthectomized rats expression of pERK and cFos proteins was markedly suppressed in ipsi-lesional side as well as contra-lesional side following stimulation of the horizontal semicircular canal. Furthermore no expression of pERK1/2 and cFos protein in the bilateral vestibular nuclei of bilaterally labyrinthectomized rats was noted after stimulation of the horizontal semicircular canal. CONCLUSIONS: Therefore these results of present study suggest that excitatory afferent signals from the peripheral vestibular receptors are essential for protein translation for pERK1/2 and cFos in response to stimulation of the semicircular canal.

Coronary pseudo-lesion is an artificial lesion that occurs during percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty by an angioplasty guide wire and/or a balloon as a result of a straightening of the vessel curvature. A specific treatment is not required and the condition is completely resolved after removing the angioplasty wire. There are few reports about a pseudo-lesion, particularly in the left circumflex artery. We report two cases of a coronary pseudo-lesion induced by an angioplasty guide wire; one case affecting the left circumflex artery and the other affecting the right coronary artery.
