Thyroid acropachy is a rare complication of Graves' disease, manifested by clubbing of the terminal phalanges, periosteal new bone formation and overlying soft tissue swelling, It may occur when the patient is hypothyroid, euthyroid or hyperthyroid. In most cases, it is a part of the syndrome, including exophthalmos and/or pretibial myxedema. The authors have experienced one case of thyroid acropachy and report with a review of the literature review. The patient a 56-year-old female with a characteristic feathery new bone formation on the medial side of the shaft of the left first metatarsal bone and overlying soft tissue swelling. However, there was no pretibial myxedema and clubbing of fingers. She was hypothyroid and treated with systemic corticosteroid for mild pain and persistent swelling. The treatment had temporarily improved the patient's condition.

BACKGROUND: Kinesio taping is a treatment for pain and dysfunction of musculoskeletal system, using tapes which have a similar elasticity to skin. This study was done to find out about the efficacy of kinesio taping on patients with a low back pain. METHODS: This study was performed in patients with a non-specific low back pain who had visited the Inchon International Airport Construction Authority Clinic from January 2000 to April 2000. We performed taping to a randomized case group and a placebo to control group during the first 3 days. After the first 3 days, we assessed the changes of improvement in low back pain with visual-analogue pain scale (VAS) . From the second visit on, we also started carrying out kinesio taping in the control group. RESULTS: The total number of patients participating in this study was 43, but 4 patients did not complete the study stopped. After the first 3 days, control group showed just 0.93 of the VAS score improvement, while randomized case group showed 2.55(p=0.003). The VAS score of case and control group were 3.18 and 3.03 respectively, which showed improvement at the end point of treatment compared with the first score. CONCLUSIONS: Kinesio taping was more efficacious than placebo in patients with a nonspecific low back pain.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the stress concentration and distribution whether restoring the cavity or not while restoring with metal ceramic crown on tooth with abfraction lesion using finite element analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Maxillary first premolar was selected and made a total of 10 finite element model. Model 1 was natural tooth; Model 2 was tooth with metal ceramic crown restoration which margin was positioned above 2 mm from CEJ; Model 3 was tooth with metal ceramic crown restoration which margin was positioned on CEJ; Model 4 was natural tooth which has abfraction lesion; Model 5 and 6 had abfraction lesion and the other condition was same as model 2 and 3, respectively; Model 7 was natural tooth which had abfraction lesion restored with composite resin; Model 8 and 9 was tooth with metal ceramic crown after restoring on abfraction lesion with composite resin; Model 10 was restored tooth on abfraction lesion with composite resin and metal ceramic crown restoration which margin is positioned on lower border of abfraction lesion. Load A and Load B was also designed. Von Mises value was evaluated on each point. RESULTS: Under load A or load B, on tooth with abfraction lesion, stress was concentrated on the apex of lesion. Under load A or load B, on tooth that abfraction lesion was restored with composite resin, the stress value was reduced on the apex. CONCLUSION: In case of abfraction lesion was restored with composite resin, the stress was concentrated on the apical border of restored cavity regardless of marginal position. It was favorable to place crown margin on the enamel for restoring with metal ceramic crown.

The development of transport is being easily shared with people all over the world. It is necessary to appropriately and effectively revise the domestic quarantine law because the fatal infectious diseases are at risk of being easily shared. Today, Korea has an advanced quarantine system approved by World Health Organization, but it maintains partnerships with related ministries (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, local medical institutions) and to introduce new medical technology (electronic quarantine) is important. And since the prevention of quarantine infectious diseases and prevention of the spread, in order to maintain international cooperation with the International Health Regulations, the quarantine law and the system should be amended and improved effectively and it is also a way to prepare for the outbreak of new quarantine infectious diseases. In the past, Korea has experienced great confusion during the past outbreak of swine flu and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus. To prevent similar cases from recurring in the past, the revision of the quarantine law and the improvement of the system should be done to cope with the changing environment (new infections, increased number of overseas travelers, etc.).

Blossom blight in strawberry was first observed in a green house in Nonsan, Damyang, and Geochang areas of Korea, between early January to April of 2012. Disease symptoms started as a grey fungus formed on the stigma, which led to the blossom blight and eventually to black rot and necrosis of the entire flower. We isolated the fungi purely from the infected pistils and maintained them on potato dextrose agar (PDA) slants. To test Koch's postulates, we inoculated the fungi and found that all of the isolates caused disease symptoms in the flower of strawberry cultivars (Seolhyang, Maehyang, and Kumhyang). The isolates on PDA had a velvet-like appearance, and their color ranged between olivaceous-brown and smoky-grey to olive and almost black. The intercalary conidia of the isolates were elliptical to limoniform, with sizes ranging from 5.0~10.5 x 2.5~3.0 microm to 4.0~7.5 x 2.0~3.0 microm, respectively. The secondary ramoconidia of these isolates were 0- or 1-septate, with sizes ranging betweem 10.0~15.0 x 2.5~3.7 microm and 8.7~11.2 x 2.5~3.2 microm, respectively. A combined sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer regions, partial actin (ACT), and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF) genes revealed that the strawberry isolates belonged to two groups of authentic strains, Cladosporium cladosporioides and C. tenuissimum. Based on these results, we identified the pathogens causing blossom blight in strawberries in Korea as being C. cladosporioides and C. tenuissimum.

Lung cancer frequently metastasizes to distant organs. However, solitary metastasis to the pancreas, with lung cancer as the source, is very rare. Most metastatic cases of the pancreas tend to be discovered in patients with widely disseminated malignant disease. In addition, patients with pancreatic metastases are often asymptomatic, the metastatic lesions are found incidentally, and are misdiagnosed as primary pancreatic tumors. We described the case of a 63-year-old man who presented with abdominal pain and a pancreatic nodule. The patient underwent resection of primary lung cancer followed by pylorus preserving pancreatoduodenectomy. The pancreatic nodule was confirmed as a solitary metastasis from lung cancer.

PURPOSE: Accurate evaluation of side branch (SB) ostium could be critical to the treatment of bifurcation lesions. We compared measured and calculated values of side branch ostial length (SBOL) in coronary bifurcation lesions with intravascular ultrasound (IVUS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pre-intervention and post-intervention IVUS was performed in 113 patients who underwent stent implantation of bifurcation lesions. For the IVUS longitudinal reconstruction of the bifurcation lesions, SBOL, SB diameter, and the angle between the distal portion of the main vessel (MV) and SB were directly measured. In addition, SBOL was calculated as: SB diameter/sin (angle between distal MV and SB). The relationship between measured and calculated SBOL was then evaluated. RESULTS: The angled between the distal MV and SB were 57.3+/-12.4degrees at pre-intervention and 59.4+/-12.6degrees at post-intervention. The mean measured and calculated SBOL values were 2.91+/-0.86 mm and 3.06+/-0.77 mm at pre-intervention and 2.79+/-0.82 mm and 2.92+/-0.69 mm at post-intervention, respectively. Differences between measured and calculated SBOL were 0.15+/-0.44 mm at pre-intervention and 0.13+/-0.41 mm at post-intervention. We found that calculated SBOL was correlated with measured SBOL (pre-intervention r=0.863, p<0.001; post-intervention r=0.868, p<0.001). CONCLUSION: There was a good correlation between measured and calculated SBOLs of the bifurcation lesions in IVUS longitudinal reconstruction. SBOL in the bifurcation lesions can therefore be estimated using the SB diameter and the angle between distal MV and SB.
