Chinese Journal of Clinical Oncology 2014;(21):1413-1415
Diabetes mellitus increases the risk of breast cancer and affects the prognosis of breast cancer patients. Metformin, an anti-diabetic drug, decreases blood glucose level and has a role in suppressing various cancers. In addition, metformin has a unique in-hibitory effect on breast cancer, i.e., it can inhibit breast cancer cells in vivo and in vitro. Moreover, metformin exerts its anti-tumor ef-fect on epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER-2) positive and monoclonal antibody trastuzumab-resistant breast cancer cell lines, breast cancer stem cells, and triple negative breast cancer cells. Metformin can reduce the risk of the breast cancer in patients with dia-betes, lower histologic grade, and increase expression of estrogen and progesterone receptors. Furthermore, metformin has certain effect on neo-adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer. This review aims to clarify the mechanism of metformin in restraining breast cancer based on basic and clinical study results.

Objective To investigate biomechanical analysis of poly DL-lactic acid (PDLLA)biodegradable fusion cage of the lumbar vertebrae in vivo degradation. Methods Forty-eight healthy adult porcine were divided into experimental group and control group at randomly. PDLLA cage full of autogenous bone and bone block with the same size were planted in L45 intervertebrae respectively. At the 1st, 3rd, 6th,9th, 12th, and 18th month postoperatively, the animals were sacrificed and the surgical spinal segment was observed. The range of motion (ROM) was measured. Results The ROMs had no statistical differences at all motion directions between the two froups at the 1st month postoperatively. But the ROMs of experimental group were greater than those of control group at extension direction at the 3rd and 6th month postoperatively. The ROMs of extension was the greatest while the ROMs of right rotation was the least in both groups. At the 9th month postoperatively: the ROMs of experimental group greater than those of control group except at rotation. The ROMs of right rotation was the least in both groups. The greatest ROMs was at extension in experimental group and at right bending in control group. ALL ROMs tended to decrease and the ROMs of extension had comparability between tow groups. At the 12th month postoperatively, experimental group had greater ROMs at extension and left bending and less ROMs at other directions. Likewise statistical differences showed only at extension. 18th month postoperatively all ROMs were close between two groups. Conclusion After PDLLA cage is planted, the first 3 months is autologous stable stage. The period of 3rd to 6th months is easily released stage. The operative segments are stable from 9th to 12th months and acquired.Critical period between stability and instability is from 6th to 9th months. Bone fusion is from 12th to 18th months postoperatively.

Conventional diagnostic methods used for pathologic nipple discharge (PND) include color ultrasound, mammary mo-lybdenum target X-ray radiography (mammography), nipple cytologic smears, and ductography. Diagnosis of PND through inspection yields indirect signs and has low positive rate. Fiberoptic ductoscopy (FDS) allows direct visualization of intra-ductal lesions, evaluates etiology of PND, and accurately locates intraductal lesions through wire marking. FDS is a valuable test for the early diagnosis of breast cancer and can help identify appropriate location for surgical excision. Interventional treatment for ductal ectasia and inflamma-tion is also efficient. Our study discusses FDS as a novel diagnosis and treatment method for PND patients.

Journal of Clinical Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery 2015;29(10):921-924
OBJECTIVE:
To detect the expression of ERβ in laryngeal carcinoma and the its correlation with the expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT) specific biomarkers.
METHOD:
Picture MT-Pv9000 was used to detect ERβ and EMT in 72 cases of human aqueous laryngeal carcinoma and 8 cases of adjacent non-neoplastic laryngeal mucosa by immunohistochemistry.
RESULT:
The positive rates of ERβ in tumors and adjacent non-neoplastic laryngeal mucosa were 27.78% and 25.00%, respectively. The differences were not significant (P > 0.05). The abnormal expression rates of E-cadherin and β-catenin were 61.11% and 76.39% respectively. The expression of ERβ correlated negatively with the loss of E-cadherin, nuclear translocation of β-catenin and increased TNM stage. The differences were significant (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION
The positive expressions of ERβ suggest a good prognosis in the differentiation, clinical stages and lymphatic metastasis of the laryngeal carcinoma. The underlying mechanism may be related with the abnormal expressions of E-cadherin and β-catenin.

Herald of Medicine 2015;(5):578-584
Objective To study the therapeutic effect of the complex mixture of luteolin and rutin ( MLR) on 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridin ( MPTP) induced Parkinson’ s disease ( PD) mouse model. Methods Seventy-two C57BL/6 mice were divided into six groups randomly ( n=12 in each group): the normal control , model control , madopar (50 mg·kg-1) group, MLR at low (140 mg·kg-1), middle (280 mg·kg-1) and high (560 mg·kg-1) dose groups. PD mouse models were established by intraperitoneal injection of MPTP ( 30 mg · kg-1 ) . Pole test and traction performance were recorded to access the body coordinate capability and strength. The tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), dopamine transport protein ( DAT) , and glial fibrillary acidic protein ( GFAP ) positive cells were detected by immunohistochemical method. Dopamine ( DA ) , dihydroxyphenylacetic acid ( DOPAC ) , homovanilic acid ( HVA ) , 5-hydroxytryptamine ( 5-HT ) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in striatum were quantified by HPLC-ECD. Results MLR significantly ameliorated mouse motor coordination ability (P<0. 01 or P<0. 05). MLR at 280 and 560 mg·kg-1 could increase TH-positive neurons by 69. 00%and 77. 95% compared with the normal control group (P<0. 01) and DAT-positive neurons by 68. 53% and 70. 40% compared with the normal control group(P<0. 05), and decrease GFAP-postive astrocyte reactivity. The treatment with MLR at three doses attenuated the monoamine neurotransmitter disorder. Conclusion MLR markedly improves MPTP caused movement coordinate ability injury in mice and exerts therapeutic action on PD by regulating neurotransmitters in brain, inhibiting the inflammatory reaction and alleviating the neuron injury.

Aim To explore the therapeutical effect and mechanism of baicalein on two 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA ) induced Parkinson′s disease (PD ) rat models, which received unilateral lesions of the left medial forebrain bundle (MFB ) or caudate putamen (CPu ) made by stereotaxic injection of 6-OHDA (MFB-M,CPu-M).Methods PD rat models were established by microinjection of 6-OHDA into MFB or CPu.The anti-tremor effect of baicalein on PD rat models was examined.Spontaneous activity was recor-ded. Dopamine (DA ), dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC)and homovanilic acid (HVA)in striatum were quantified by HPLC-ECD.The tyrosine hydroxy-lase (TH)and OX-42 positive cells were detected by immunohistochemical method. The morphological vari-ation of the neurons was confirmed by analysis at an ul-trastructural level. Results Baicalein significantly in-creased the spontaneous activity in CPu-M.The elec-tromyography (EMG ) recordings revealed that com-pared with 6-OHDA group, the tremor frequency in ba-icalein group was decreased by 55% in MFB-M,and by 60% in CPu-M.6-OHDA treatment decreased DA levels in the striatum, while treatment with baicalein attenuated the DA decreases in CPu-M.Moreover,ba-icalein treatment could increase TH-positive neurons and decrease OX-42-postive microglia compared with 6-OHDA group in both MFB-M and CPu-M.Conclu-sions In the present study,it is illustrated that ①microinjection of 6-OHDA into the MFB and the CPu could cause different pathological changes of PD, which is important for efficacy evaluation;②baicalein showed the ability to alleviate the behavior symptoms in PD-rats at different stages by improving motor function and attenuating muscle tremor;③therapeutic effect of baicalein was produced by inhibiting the inflammatory medium production and release,anti-apoptosis,chan-ging dopamine catabolism, and inhibiting dopamine turnover.
