Bleomycin is an antitumoral antibiotic derived from Streptomyces verticillus in 1965. The drug has been used with a varying success in the treatment of squamous cell carcinomas and malignant lymphomas. The cutaneous toxicities of bleomycin include hyperpigmentation, sclerosis, gangrene, nail changes and erythema. Linear streaks appear to be a characteristic eruption induced by bleomycin. We report three cases of flagellate pigmentation from intravenous bleomycin. Three patients were suffering from uterine cervical carcinomas and were treated with chemotherapy with a VBP (vincristine, bleomycin, cisplatire) regimen. During or after their courses of chemotherapy, dark brownish skin lesions developed on the body surface of these patients. A Light microscopic study of each specimen showed increased pigmentation of the basal layer and an electron microscopic study showed a slightly increased number of melanosomes in keratinocytes.

Objectives: Patients undergoing oral surgery exhibit high anxiety, which may elevate their cortisol levels and affect postoperative recovery. Overweight patients are often encountered in the dental clinic due to the increasing prevalence of overweight. We aimed to investigate the relationships between preoperatively assessed body mass index (BMI), serum cortisol and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels, and visual analog scale (VAS) scores and preoperative anxiety in patients undergoing mandibular third molar (MM3) extraction and to identify predictors of postoperative complications. Patients and Methods: We analyzed 43 patients (age, 20-42 years) undergoing MM3 extraction. At the first visit, patients completed the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) and Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) questionnaires. Their BMI and VAS scores were also calculated. The participants underwent blood tests 1 hour before MM3 extraction. On the first postoperative day, the participants’ VAS scores and serum hs-CRP levels were reevaluated. Results: We found that BMI was significantly correlated with preoperative VAS scores. Further, BMI and preoperative hs-CRP levels were significantly correlated among women and patients undergoing extractions of fully impacted MM3s. No correlations were found between serum cortisol and other variables. The preoperative MDAS and VAS scores were significantly positively correlated, especially among patients undergoing extractions of fully impacted MM3s. Multiple linear regression showed that BMI and the eruption status of the MM3 were significant predictors of postoperative hsCRP levels and VAS scores, respectively. Conclusion In MM3 removals, patients with higher BMI showed elevated hs-CRP and higher VAS scores before surgery. Patients with higher anxiety among those undergoing extractions of fully impacted MM3s showed higher preoperative VAS scores. The two main predictors of postoperative complications were BMI and MM3 eruption status.

Parkinsonism is not commonly associated with intracranial tumors. The most common brain tumor causing parkinsonism is meningiomas. We are presenting two cases of meningiomas whose major manifestations included parkinsonism. In one, parkinsonian symptoms initially partially responded to L-dopa and bromocriptine. A CT scan taken for a stroke-like episode revealed a meningioma of left frontal convexity. After neurological sequelae of CO poisoning, the patient poorly responded to antiparkinsonian drugs. Surgical treatment of meningioma did not result in satisfactory control of extrapyramidal symptoms. In the other with a parasagittal meningioma, parkinsonian symptoms were postoperatiYely improved. Because no curative treatment is available for the majority of parkinsonian patients, early detection of an underlying neoplasm may result in a most rewarding outcome. It would be desirable to perform CT or MRI in cases of parkinsonism with other associated neurological manifestation. Unilaterality of parkinsonian symptoms may also be indication.

Tigers are one of the most endangered species over the world and protected internationally or locally. However, they are still traded illegally for the Traditional East Asia Medicine or souvenirs / mementos as well as fake products. In the present study, to identify the species of the specimen known as the tiger's genitalia that was sold for mementos in China, two approaches of genetic tools and morphological comparisons were applied. On the basis of the entire sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (1,140 bp), the result of nucleotide comparisons showed that the specimen examined here is matched with banteng, Bos javanicus (Identities = 1,138/1,140; 99%). In addition, the examination of external morphological characters revealed that the genitalia of the specimen is much more similar to the one of cows, not to tigers. The outcomes highlighted that there are still some fake products of tigers traded in market and molecular genetic tools could help identifying species of wildlife products.
