index (%) in unirradiated mouse skin was 11.0+/-4.3. LI was significantly increased by tape stripping to 22.1+/-4.6. 2. The number of SBC in 1cm epidermis after 50mJ/cm UVB exposure was 28.2+/-4.1. The number of SBC was increased by tape stripping to 57.4+Cell proliferation, by evaluating sunburn cell (SBC) formation, was studied in mouse skin following tape stripping and ultraviolet light B (UVB) exposun.. 1-radiation was achieved using high pressure mercury are UVB. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Labeling 19.2. These results suggest that proliferating cells are more sensitive to UVB exposure.

We compared the performance of three screening kits for the detection of anti-HIV in 187 samples; Enzygnost Anti-HIV 1/2 Plus, ABBOTT TESTPACK HIV- 1/HIV-2 & SERODIA. HIV- 1/2. Four samples, 3 serums and 1 CSF, from 2 patients were repeatedly reactive in all three screening kits and 2 serum specimens were confirmed positive(HIV-1) by the western blot assay. The sensitivity and specificity of all three screening kits were 100% and 98.9%, respectively. In Korea, the cause of AIDS is mostly HIV-1 and the prevalence is very low. So, all three screening kits were useful for the detection of anti-HIV from patients and blood donors. But the use of screening kit for the detection of anti-HIV-1, anti-HIV-2 and anti-HIV-I subtype O will be needed for the decrement of false negative rate because HIV infection has been increased, especially, HIV-2 infection and pediatric AIDS patient by vertical transmission were also reported, currently.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinicopathologic characteristics of the torsion of the ovarian tumor in postmenopausal women. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 20 postmenopausal patients with a postoperative diagnosis of torsion of the ovarian tumor in Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Hanyang University Hospital from January 1989 to December 1998. RESULTS: The postmenopausal patients with torsion of the ovarian tumor constitute 20/94 (21.3%) of all adnexal torsion patients encountered during this period. The mean (+/-SD) age of the 20 patients was 63.5+/-9.0 years, with a range of 52-90 years. The mean time since menopause was 16.5+/-10.3 years, with a range of 1-39 years. The mean parity was 5.4+/-2.0 (range of 3-10). Lower abdominal pain (65%) was the most frequently presenting symptom, palpable mass(20%) or diagnosed mass(15%) being the second. But, in 20% of cases there was no lower abdominal pain. The torsion occurred at the right side in 11cases (55%) and at the left side in 9 cases. The most frequent degree of torsion was those cases that was rotated twice (720 degrees). The neoplasms undergoing torsion ranged in diameter between 5cm and 30cm and the most prevalent size was 6 to 10 cm (8 cases). Most of the patients (17cases) were treated by total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. The tumors that produce torsion varied histologically and the most common type was cystic teratoma (in 5 cases), simple cyst(in 3 cases), serous cystadenoma(in 2 cases), mucinous cystadenoma(in 2 cases). CONCLUSIONS: In our study, ovarian tumor torsion occurring in postmenopausal patients constituted approximately 20% of all torsion patients, therefore adnexal torsion should be considered when a postmenopausal woman presents with lower abdominal pain. When torsion is diagnosed, total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy is the usual treatment for postmenopausal patients. Histologically, in more than 90% of cases, the tumors that produce torsion were benign. If cancer is evident, more extensive surgery is required.

Twenty-five patients with unstable fracture or fracture-dislocation of the thoracolumbar and lumbar spines were treated with Cotrel-Dubousset instrumentation. Internal fixation was done in two ways; long rodding in seventeen patients and short rodding in eight. Short segment posterolateral or posterior autogenous iliac bone graft was done in all cases. The amount of correction of the collapsed anterior vertebral body height and the local kyphotic angle at the immediate post-operation were similar between the two groups, but loss of correction at last follow-up was more severe in the short rodding group. Instrument failure was also more common in the short rodding group. In conclusion, it was found that short segment stabilization of spine fractures with Cotrel-Dubousset instrument can effectively reduce fracture but can not maintain reduction until fusion. Therefore, long rodding was reconfirmed to be the better method of stabilization of the thoracolumbar and lumbar spines fractures.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1996;30(8):733-738
Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation was first described in 1983, when Nora and his collegues reported 35 examples of a proliferative lesion involving bones of the hands and the feet. In 1993, Meneses reported 65 cases of this condition. A fourth of all the reported cases involved the long bones. It is important to identify the clinical, roentgenographic, and histologic characteristic to seperate it from other entities because it is a benign lesion with atypical microscopic features with a tendency to recur. Roentgenograms show a calcific mass attached to the underlying cortex having a broad base. Histologically, the lesion exhibites proliferative activity, irregular bony cartilaginous interfaces, and enlarged, bizarre, and binucleated chondrocytes. We reviewed the bone tumors, diagnosed in the KyungHee University Hospital, dated from 1984 to 1994. Five cases were revised to Nora's lesion, all of which were previously diagnosed as osteochondroma. The ages of the patients ranged from 12 to 57 years (median, 19 years), and all of them were males. Two cases involved the bones of hands and feet (metacarpal and talus), and 3 cases involved the long bones (humerus, fibula, and ulna). One lesion involving the humerus has a recurrence. No metastasis had been reported.

We carried out the mouse tail technique and the Candida albicans test for the study of the phototoxic reaction to amiodarone. The mouse tail technique is based on the inflammatory response of mouse tails after systemic administration of the drug and UVA irradiation and the Candida albicans test is based on growth inhibition of Candida albicana In the mouse tail technique, following the administration of amiodarone and UVA irradia tion for 5 consecutive days, there was a significant increase(14% ) in the relative water content as compared to other control groups. In the Candida albicans test, UVA irradiation after pretreatment with amiodarone resulted in a clear Candida-free zone around the disc. The results showed that amiodarone had a phototoxic potential and that both of the methods were a good screening test for demonstrat.ing the phototoxicity of a certain drug.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1992;30(2):186-196
After UV irradiation to mouse epidermis, autoradiography using H-thymidine was performed to study the effects of UV on scheduled and unschcdu ed DNA syntheses. The results can be summarized as follows. l. In case of UVB 100mJ/cm, heavily labeled cells (HLCs) representing scheduled DNA synthesis began to decrease immediately after UVB irradiai, ior and were significantly decreased after 24 hours, but then recovered after 48 hours. The ecovery was maintained from 72 hours, up to 7 days. Sparsely labeled cells (SLCs) repres inting unscheduled DNA synthesis were significantly increased from immediately after UV 3 irradiation and up to 6 hours later. Repair was present at 24 hours, and was maintained at 48 hours, 72 hours, and 7 day after irradiation. 2. In case of UVA, UVA 10J/cm did not affect DNA synthesis sign ficantly. But in cases of UVA 30J/cm and 50J/cm, HLCs began to decrease immediately after UVA irradiation and were significantly decreased for 24 hours. Recovery occured at 48 hours, and was maintained from 72 hours up to 7 days. SLCs were significently increased immediately after and up to 6 hours after UVB irradiation. Repair generally occurred after 24 hours, and was maintained at 48 hours, 72 hours, and 7 days after ir rad ation.
