PURPOSE: This study was to examine the relationship of knowledge, health beliefs, and prevention behaviors of osteoporotic fracture in outpatients with osteoporosis. METHODS: The subjects were 120 outpatients receiving osteoporosis treatment on K hospital in G city from Dec. 2007 to Feb. 2008. Questionnaires were collected and analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 12.0 program for descriptive statistics, and t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient. RESULTS: Subjects were treated for fracture about 28 months. The mean score of knowledge, health belief and prevention behaviors in subjects were 17.5 +/- 3.22, 2.8 +/- 0.23 and 2.8 +/- 0.38 respectively. The score of health belief recorded the lowest point. However, the score of knowledge varied with general and disease-related characteristics of subjects. In contrast, the score of prevention behaviors did not showed any significant differences. Fracture prevention behavior in subjects showed rather higher relationship with the health belief system than the knowledge of fracture prevention. CONCLUSION: The present work suggested that education program for prevention behaviors of fracture should be developed to focus on altering the health belief system rather than the knowledge of osteoporotic fracture prevention. Furthermore, individual education program based on living circumstances and daily life habits should be also developed.

Scute/larisa baica/ensis (SB) has been used as a folk medicine for curing ulcer, inflammation and infection. However, surprisingly little has been done to develop and exploit SB's immunomodulating, anti- inflammatory properties. Moreover, the mechanisms of SB-action on immune function had not been elucidated. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of 5B on immune functions, microbial growth and bacterial mutagenicity. Boiling water extract of SB was used in this experiment. The proliferation response to PHA-, Con A- or LPS-stimulation and the production of Con A-induced IL-2 and LPS-induced IL-6 of splenocytes from SB-pretreated mice were significantly higher than those of splenocytes from control mice. Daily single injection of 2 mg/mouse SB for 4 days resulted in enhancement of Arthus reaction and DTH to SRBC. And these enhancements were more prominent when SB was treated prior to SRBC- sensitization. SB did inhibit the growth of microorganisms such as C. albicans, C. neoformans, E. coli S. typhimurium and this inhibiting effect was gradually increased in proportion to the increment of SB. SB also remarkably reduced the mutagenicity of mutagens such as sodium azid and benzo[a]pyrene, but this was not certain, because it showed a killing effect on the cell survival test. When SB treated mice were i.p infected with C. albicans, the number of microorganisms in the peritoneal exudates were significantly reduced. Taken together, these results revealed that SB itself has not only multiple effects on events controlling immune responses but also anti-inflammatory properties, which may provide the rational basis for their therapeutic use as one of the biological response modifiers.

A Preliminary study for the evaluation of the Rehabilitation Nursing Program(RNP) implemented to the 25 stroke survivors at the Day Care Program Center of National Rehabilitation Hospital in Seoul was done at 1999. The purposes of this study was to assess the psychological effects as outcome-variables such as depression. powerlessness and self efficacy of the stroke survivors who were discharged from acute care hospitals. The Rehabilitation Nursing Program (RNP) integrated with the Day Care Program for rehabilitation was implemented and the psychological outcome variables were measured by 3 psychologic instruments of Zung Depression Scale. Millers's powerlessness and the Bandura's self efficacy scale. These instruments were translated into Korean and the contents validity and the reliability were tested. The subjects were 17 males and 8 females and 52% were aged over 51 years old and 24 % were from 31 to 50 years old. Most of them(72 %) had been educated more than high school level. The contents of RNP were 8 sessions composing of self-introduction. individualized assessment, health contract and feedback, management of depression, shaving experiences, effective communication, self efficacy teaching, health information. and daily care activities. This study found that the level of depression and the powerlessness were within average level and had not been changed the level of self efficacy after RNP were somewhat higher than before, but it was not changed significantly. According to the results. the psychological state of the subjects were not changed significantly. Only the level of self efficacy was a little improved after having the RNP. Based on theses results, the RNP should be focussed on the psychological nursing care and the psychological outcome variables were retested strictly with the enough sample size.

PURPOSE: Although alpha-fetoprotein is one of the most commonly used tumor markers in Korea, most of the radioimmunoassay kits for alpha-fetoprotein have been imported from foreign countries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of a recently developed domestic immunoradiometric kit for alpha- fetoprotein (Riakey AFP IRMA CTR, Sin-Jin Medics, Seoul, Korea). MATERALS AND METHODS: We evaluated intra- and inter-assay precision, recovery rate, parallelism, and sensitivity of serum alpha-fetoprotein measurement using Riakey AFP IRMA CTR kit. The values of alpha-fetoprotein measured by Riakey AFP IRMA CTR kit were compared with those measured by two foreign commercial kits (alpha-fetoproteina of Radim and alpha-feto.riabead of Abbott). RESULTS: Intra-assay coefficients of variation on three different levels were 5.3% for 18.9 ng/ml, 3.4% for 133 ng/ml and 1.6% for 330 ng/ml. Inter-assay coefficients of variation were 9.7% for 20.9 ng/ml, 3.2% for 137 ng/ml and 4.1% for 330 ng/ml respectively. Recovery rate tests on all three different levels showed within 100+/-10%. Parallelism was also good and the sensitivity was 0.63 ng/ml. There was strong correlation between the measurement of alpha-fetoprotein by Riakey AFP IRMA CTR and that by two foreign commercial kits(r=0.98). CONCLUSION: The first Korean domestic immunoradiometric kit for alpha-fetoprotein, Riakey AFP IRMA CTR, performed well for clinical use.

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to support and enhance the community mental health for the urban poor. The purposes of the study were as follows: 1) to investigate the mental health states of the urban poor, who are the first target population, 2) to identify the factors influencing their mental health states. METHODS: The subjects were community residents in low socioeconomic level, who are 20-59 years old. And the scale used was GHQ (General Health Questionnaire) which is used for screening the mental health states of groups and self-esteem. The survey subjects were directly interviewed by staffs in Public Mental Health Center. SPSS PC 6.0 was used for the statistical analysis. It investigated the mental health states, according to social and demographic attributes, and self-esteem of target population. And the mental health states were analyzed to three subdomains: overall mental health states, social dysfunction, and anxiety-depression domains. RESULTS: First, in demographic attributes, the old men, who are of low socioeconomic level, single, bad physical health, low community life satisfaction, low educational background, and having no religons, were low in overall mental health states, social function, and high in anxiety-depression domain. Second, the residents, who had high self-esteem, were high in overall mental health states, social funtion, and low in anxiety-depression domain. Third, the residents, who had high self-esteem scores, were significantly high in overall mental health states, social function, and low in anxiety-depression domain. Fourth, Among the various factors influencing the mental health states, the self-esteem was the most important factor, and the physical health was the next important factor. And the higher self-esteem they had, the better physical health states, the older they were, the higher the mental health states became. Fifth, comparing the high risk group with non-risk group, those who were in their 20's and 40's, had no wives or husbands, low educational background, physical workers, and were not well healthy, were apt to have mental diseases. CONCLUSION: In the future, the first target population in the community mental health services will be the urban poor in low mental health states. For those who are apt to have mental diseases, the first step of community mental health works is to find, select and give basic mental health services. The staffs in community mental health center have to develop various mental health programs and inform the public of them.
