PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to investigate the biomechanical and histological changes in the muscles after tendon injury that have been little studied previously. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Triceps insertion was tenotomized on the left hidlimbs of 60 rabbits. Mechanical extension testing with Instron (rate: 10 mm/min) was performed 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 and 16 weeks after tenotomy in vivo. A load deformation curve was obtained, and this was analyzed in terms of strength and deformation at the elastic limit and at the point of maximal load. Histologic changes were observed after H < E staining and Matson s trichrome staining to measure the percentage area of collagen fibers. RESULTS: Between weeks 1 and 4, the excursion range fell gradually, and after that period, this value showed little changes. After its initial period of disequilibrium, the muscle regained its elastic nature within its newly formed excursion range. The average amount of collagen fibers increased gradually after tenotomy until 8th week. CONCLUSIONS: unless tendon ruptures are repaired early, the accompanying muscle would be irreversibly damaged, both bimechanically and histologically.

Korean Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology 2000;43(3):380-385
OBJECTIVE: SCC-Ag(Squamous Cell Carcinoma Antigen) is a tumor marker for patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. It has shown that the SCC-Ag was well related with the response of cancer therapy and course of cervical cancer. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the presence of pelvic lymph node metstasis can be predicted by the measurement of the preoperative SCC-Ag levels in the patients with early staged squamous cell carcinoma of cervix. METHODS: The preoperative serum SCC-Ag levels were measured in 45 patients with stage I-II squamous cell carcinoma of cervix undergoing radical hysterectomy from September 1995 to December 1997. The serum SCC-Ag levels were analyzed for the clinicopathologic characteristics and other prognostic factors using univariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS: The serum SCC-Ag levels of the patients exhibited pelvic lymph node metastasis were above 4.8ng/ml. An elevated preoperative serum SCC-Ag level, and tumor size were independent predictors for the presence of lymph node metastasis(p<0.01). CONCLUSION: The determination of the preoperative serum SCC-Ag levels provides a new prognostic factor in early staged cervical cancer.

A 21-year-old male suffered from generalized anhidrosis and heat intolerance for about 15 years. Other clinical features included multiple angiokeratoma on the back, scrotum and extremities, together with ocular involvement. The electronmicroscopic studies of the skin demonstrated laminated intracytoplamic inclusions in the endothelial cells, pericytes of dermal vessels, fibroblasts and eccrine glandular cells. a Galactosidase assay of leukocytes from the patient and his uncle showed nearly absence of the activity,

Ninety black C 57 BL mice were divided into control and photochemotherapy groups. Control group was subdivided into a UVA 1rradiation only subgroup and a khellin only administration subgroup, while the phototherapy group was subdivided into one TMP and two khellin administration subgroups with dosages of 1.5mg/kg, 5mg/kg and 20mg/kg, respectivly. UVA was administered three thimes a week in a dose of 4J/cm for 4 weeks. Skin biopsies were taken at 0, l, 2, 3 and 4 weeks and the split DOPA stain was employed to observe pigment production. The number, size and circumference of the melanocytes were assessed. In summary, our results inclicate that khellin, which is slightly less effective than TMP at the same effective dose, is quite effective for pigment production and the degree of the production is dose related.

Japanese Journal of Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine 2010;59(4):363-374
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of combined exercise on visceral fat, cardiac function, adipocytokine, and NT-pro BNP concentration according to angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE) genotype in obese middle aged men. Fifty three obese men (II type: 18, ID type: 20, DD type: 15), ratio of visceral and subcutaneous were over 0.4, were enrolled in the study. The combined exercise program included stretching, resistance training, aerobic exercise, and yoga. The exercise was conducted for 60 minutes, 4 times a week for 12 week period. ACE genotype was determined using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and the genetic subtype was classified in three patterns e.g. II, ID, DD. As a results, body weight, BMI, and WHR significantly decreased after 12 weeks of combined exercise in ID type and DD type. Body fat(%), visceral fat and V/S significantly decreased after 12 weeks in DD type. HDL-C and LDL-C significantly improved in II, ID and DD type. Cardiac structure decreased in all genotype and cardiac function increased in DD type. IL-6 and NT-pro BNP, the risk factors of cardiovascular disease, were significantly decreased in DD type, after 12 weeks. Therefore, exercises have shown to be most effective in type DD which is also considered as the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Among all the ACE genotype, DD type requires the most exercise.
