1.Effects of Cadmium on Superoxide Radical, Superoxide Dismutase, Catalase and ATPase Activity in Liver, Kidney and Testicle of Rats in Vtm and in Vivo.

Production of free radicals of superoxide anion in tissues by cadmium, activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase to protect tissue damages caused by the free radicals and ATPase that plays an important role in energy metabolism at cellular level were investigated. Experiments in viro were conducted with liver, kidney and testicle tissue homogenates of rats adding 0.05~0.50 mM cadmium chloride, and in vivo experiments administering single dose of 5mg of cadmium/kg of body weight in 0.1% cadmium chloride solution intraperitoneally 48 hours prior to evisceration. Production of superoxide radicals in liver and testicle increased with addition of cadmium in vitro, but not in kidney. In vivo experiments, however superoxide radicals slightly increased in liver and kidney but not in testicle. Superoxide dismutase (Cu, Zn-SOD and Mn-SOD), catalase and ATPase (total, (Mg++)- & (Na+)- (K+)-) activity decreased in the presence of cadmium in dose dependent manner. Reduction of these enzyme activities varied not only with dosage of cadmium but also with type of tissue and between in vitro and in vivo experiment.

2.Arthrogram of Ankle Joint

Recently we performed arthrography in 10 cases of ankle injuries and obtained abnormal findings roentgenographically suspected to be ligamentous injury in only 8 cases. In two cases surgical exploration was done. Although two arthrographys is not completely reliable and sufficiently specific to justify the use of this technique in elucidating injuries to the lateral ligament complex, it has value in the diagnosis of diastasis (hidden sprains of the anterior or posterior tibio-fibular ligament), in distinction between old and recent lesions and in diagnosing some sprains of the deltoid and lateral ligaments of the ankle.

3.In vitro senstivity of sporothrix schenckii against antifungal agents.

BACKGROUND: Despite concern about treatment of sporotrichosis, little is known about the sensitivity of S. schenckii against antifungal agents. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to investigate minimal irihibitory concentration(MIC) of antifungal agents against S.chenckii. METHOD: The tested strains were seven in number. The tested antifngal agents were ketoconazole, itraconazole, amphotericin B, and potassium iodide. A various concentration of drugs were mixed into fluid media containing 50% ethanol, dimethyl sulfoxide, and distilled water. The inoculum consisted of 3mm block containing hyphae and spores. RESULTS: MIC ranges of ket.oconazole, itraconazole, amphotericin B, and potassium iodide were 0.39- 25pg/ml, 0.78-25pg/ml, 0.78-25pg/ml, and 75-550pg/ml, respectively. CONCLUSION: We find that ketoconazole is the most active drug against S. schenckii.

4.Isolation of Chlamydia Trachomatis in Non-gonococcal Urethritis and Chronic Prostatitis and the Result of Treatment with Antibiotics.

The possible role of Chlamydia trachomatis in non-gonococcal urethritis and chronic prostatitis was investigated by cultural technique in a study of 281 and 215 respectively. Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from 106(37.7%) of 281 non-gonococcal urethritis patients and 49(22.8%) of 215 chronic prostatitis patients. The effectiveness of tetracycline hydrochloride and doxycycline was evaluated by reculture method after 2 weeks` treatment. Thus in this study Chlamydia trachomatis could appear to play a major etiological roles in non-gonococcal urethritis and chronic prostatitis in Korea. And 2 weeks prescription of tetracycline or doxycycline is efficient for eradication of Chlamydia trachomatis.

6.A Case of Kerion Ceisi Caused by Trichophyton Verrucosum and Treated with Itraconazole.

We report a case of kerion celsi caused by Trichophyton(T.) verrucosum in a 15-year-old male, who showed a trender, indurated, swollen, boggy mass exuding pus on the frontal scalp for 15 days. Culture from a scalp lesion of patient and infected cattles on Sabouraud dextrose agar showed T. verrucosum. Therapy was initiated on with 100mg of itraconazole daily with almost complete resolution of scalp lesion one month after treatment. During the one month follow up reriod, scalp lesion showed new black hairs and no recurrence.

9.THE MANAGEMENT OF ORAL CANCER PAIN.

Pain from cancer is a major problem of managing the oral cancer patients in terminal stage. Overall, pain is reported by about 50% of patients at all stages of cancer and by over 70% with advanced neoplasms. Unrelieved pain can be incapaciting and preclude a satisfying quality of life. But, pain is often poorly assessed, and many clinicians lack sufficient knowledge to optimize cancer pain treatment. There are three basic approaches to the control of pain : modifying the source of pain, altering the central perception of pain, and blocking the transmission of pain to the central nervous system. The optimal use of these approaches and an individualized plan for pain control can maximize both quality and duration of life in dying patients. Opioid analgesics are are the mainstay of pharmacologic treatment. Practical opioid therapy include selection of both drug and route, dose titration, and management of side effects. We present our experienced pharmacologic treatment protocol for cancer pain management that collaborated by Dept. of Hospice, Catholic Medical Center. It will acts as a guideline for our colleague to facilitate the translation of current knowlegde into the clinical practice.

10.Doppler Echocardiographic Prediction of Pulmonary Arterial Pressure in Ventricular Septal Defect.

This study was carried out to determine the accuracy of Doppler echocardiography for predicting the pulmonary arterial pressure from right ventricular systolic time intervals in 52 patients with ventricular septal defect. The diagnosis of ventricular septal defect was made by cardiac catheterization and angiocardiography at Dong San hospital, Keimyung University during the period of one year from jan. 1988 to Dec. 1988. Doppler measurements of acceleration time (AT), right ventricular ejection time (RVET), right ventricular preejection period (RPEP), AT/RVET, and RPEP/AT were compared with pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP), measured by cardiac catheterization. The patients were divided into 3 groups : PAP< or =30mm Hg, PAP 31-59mm Hg, PAP??0mm Hg. The following results were obtained. 1) In the groups of PAP< or =30mm Hg, AT was 0.12+/-0.01sec, AT/RVET was 0.47+/-0.07 and RPEP/AT was 0.50+/-0.05. 2) In the groups of PAP> or =60mm HG, AT was 0.06+/-0.01sec. AT/RVET was 0.28+/-0.05. RPEP/AR was 1.51+/-0.21. As the level of PAP increased, Doppler AT, AT/RVET and RPEP/AT showed significant change(P<0.001). 3) The Doppler AT showed relative high correlation(r=-0.76) with PAP measured by cardiac catheterization in all group. 4) The Doppler AT/RVET showed correlation(r=-0.70) with PAP. 5) The Doppler RPEP/AT showed high correlation(r=0.91) with PAP. The Doppler echocardiography was easy to apply in all age groups, and was found useful for detecting pulmonary hypertension in ventricular septal defect and for the follow-up check of the patients. It may help to determine the optimal time for surgery and evaluation of the treatment.
