1.Invitrosensitivity of trichophyton mentagrophytes against oral antifungal agents.
Korean Journal of Dermatology 1992;30(6):769-775
In vitro sensitivity of T. mentagrophytes against antifungal agents was investigated. The 20 strains of T. mentagrophytes were tested. They were 5 strains of granilar form, 5 of powdery form, 5 of persicolor form, and 5 of downy for m. The tested antifungal agents were griseofulvin, ket, oconazole and it,raconazole. The results were as follows : 1. Minimal inhibitory concintration(MIC) of antifungal agents against, T. mentagrophytes : MIC of griseofulvin was 3.13-25 ug/ml, the highest level, that of ketoconazole was 0.05-12 ug/ml, and that of itraconazole was 0.025 6.25 ug/ml, the lowest one. 2. MIC of antifungal agents against T. mentagrophytes strains. MlC of griseofulvin was 12-25 ug/ml on granular form and 3.13-25 ug/ml on the other forms. MIC of ketoconazole was 0.39-12 ug/ml on granular form, 0,05 0.78 ug/ml on powdery form, 0.05 12 ug/ml on persicolor form, and 0.1-12 ug/ml on downy form. MIC of itraconazole was 0.39-6.25 ug/ml on granular form, 0.05-0.39 ug/ml on powdevy form, 0.025-0.05 ug/ml on persicolor form, and 0.05-0.1 ug/ml on downy form. Granular form showed the highest level of MIC among antifungal agents. These findings suggesed that, itraconazole was the most arctive drug against T. mentagrophytes and the pranular form showed the lowest, sensirivity against antifungal agents.

2.A study of stress and neuroticism in patients with alopecia areata.
Korean Journal of Dermatology 1992;30(4):478-483
This study was to evaluate stressful events approximately 3 weeks prior to the onset of alopecia, and neuroticism of patients, by questionnaires to 59 patients and 37 controls. Questionnaires are composed of two parts ; social readjustment rating scale proposed in Korea (Stress Score) and Eysenck's Mausley personality inventory (Neuroticism Score). The results are as follows: 1. By age and sex distributions of patients, the majority occured between 20 and 39 years of age (approximately 80%), mean age was 32.39+/-10.3 years old, and female patients outnumbered male patients by 36:23 ratio. 2. For stress score, patients group was higher than control, 94.80+/-75.7, vs 53.33+/-67.0 (p<0.01). 3. For neuroticism score, patients group was higher than control, 14.39+/-6.6 vs 10.00+/-6.5 (p<0.01). 4. The stress core by sex in patients group was higher in male than female patients, 114.78+/-72.4 vs 80.44+/-75.8 (p=0.08). Neuroticism core was higher in female patients 16.33+/-6.5 vs 11.35+/-5.7 (p<0.01). 5. The comparision of stress score between male patients and male controls was higher in patients, 11.478+/-72.4 vs 48.18+/-57.2 (p<0.01), and neuroticism score was higher in patients, 11.35+/-5.6 vs 7.65+/-5.2 (p<0.05). The comparision of stress score between female patients and female controls was higher in patients, 80.44+/-75.8 vs 57.50+/-75.6 (p=0.14), and neuroticism core was higher in patients, 16.33+/-6.5 vs 12.2+/-6.7 (p<0.05).

5.Tinea pedis and tinea manus in children.
Korean Journal of Dermatology 1993;31(5):713-720
BACKGROUND: Because of concern about the infrequent occurre icc of tinea pedis tinea manus, we studied the incidence of them. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to investigate clinical and mycological features of tinea pedis tinea manus. MEHTODS: We reviewed outpatients with tinea pedis tinea minus at the Catholic Skin Disease Clinic from 1976 to 1991. RESULTS: The incidence was 0.08% out of 1,106,246 outpatients in tinea pedis, 0.02% in tinea manus. Interdigital lesions were the most common in tinea pedis. The ratio of male to female patients was 1.46: 1 in tinea pedis, 1.34:1 in tinea manus. The seasonaI pevalance was highest in summer. The species isolated were, in order of decreasing frequency, Trihohyton(T.) rubrum(89.9%), T. mentagrophytes(8.5%), Microgorum(M.) canis (1.6%) in tinea pedis, T. rubrum(77.8%), T. mentagrophytes(18.2%), M. Canis(2.0%), Epidermophyton(E.) floccosam(2.0% in tinea manus. CONCLUSION: We find that, the incidence of tinea pedis has been inc easing in recent years.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1993;31(6):884-889
BACKGROUND: Despite concern about treatment of sporotrichosis, little is known about the sensitivity of S. schenckii against antifungal agents. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to investigate minimal irihibitory concentration(MIC) of antifungal agents against S.chenckii. METHOD: The tested strains were seven in number. The tested antifngal agents were ketoconazole, itraconazole, amphotericin B, and potassium iodide. A various concentration of drugs were mixed into fluid media containing 50% ethanol, dimethyl sulfoxide, and distilled water. The inoculum consisted of 3mm block containing hyphae and spores. RESULTS: MIC ranges of ket.oconazole, itraconazole, amphotericin B, and potassium iodide were 0.39- 25pg/ml, 0.78-25pg/ml, 0.78-25pg/ml, and 75-550pg/ml, respectively. CONCLUSION: We find that ketoconazole is the most active drug against S. schenckii.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1998;36(1):47-51
BACKGROUND: Despite concern about prevention of dermatophytosis, little is known about the survival period of dermatophytes. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to investigate the survival period of dermatophytes according to various environmental conditions. METHODS: Scales for testing were collected from skin lesions of 25 patients with dermatophytosis. They were categorised into different treatment groups: kept scales themselves(S), scales in a humid condition(S+H), scales mixed with sterilized dusts(S+D), and scales mixed with sterilized dusts in a humid condition(S+D+H). They were then cultured on Sabouraud dextrose agar once a week until there was no colony growth. Data was evaluated with the Mann-Whitney U-test. RESULTS: 1) The mean survival period of Microsporum canis isolated from 5 patients with tinea(T.) capitis was 17.6(S+D+H), 16.6(S+D), 8.4(S+H) and 7 weeks(S). 2) The mean survival period of Trichophyton rubrum isolated from 20 patients of T. corporis, T. cruris, T. pedis & T. unguium was 11.8, 7.4, 9.4 and 12.2 weeks(S+D+H); 7.4, 6.8, 9.2 and 7.4 weeks(S+D); 6.6, 3.4, 8.0 and 10.4 weeks(S+H); 5.0, 2.8, 5.4, 8.2 weeks(S), respectively. CONCLUSION: We found that the survival period of dermatophytes was longest in scales mixed with sterilized dusts in a humid condition.
