Commitment has been associated with quality nursing care because it contributes to the understanding of finding meaning and value of work. This article describes the Theory on Commitment and Care in Nursing that focus on how the nurses' commitment in an organization affects the nursing care they are providing to the patients. The factors that affect a person's commitment are job satisfaction, work autonomy, trainings, working environment conditions, pay and benefits, investments, retirement plans, obligations, return service. These factors play a vital role in the commitment of nurses and thus, reflect on the delivery of the nursing practice to the patients. The model shows the framework and the relationship of the internal factors inside the workplace that influence the quality of patient care. It presents how these internal factors could strengthen or weaken the nurses' commitment to patient care. This commitment propels the nurse to achieve his/her goals in the nursing process.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the communication styles and nursing service satisfaction of clinical research nurses perceived by clinical subjects. METHODS: The data were collected with self-administrated questionnaires after receiving consents from 200 clinical trial subjects. The data were analysed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression analysis using SPSS 21.0 statistic program. RESULTS: Clinical subjects perceived that clinical research nurses used the informative, affective, and non-authoritative communication styles. The study identified factors influencing the nursing service satisfaction, and they were the informative communication styles (β=.34, p<.001) and affective communication styles (β=.35, p<.001, R2=37%) by multiple linear regression. CONCLUSION: If educational programs on communication are developed to help clinical research nurses use the informative and affective communication styles according to the characteristics of subjects and applied to the field of practice, they will be able to increase the nursing service satisfaction and contribute to the higher quality of clinical trials.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explain a structural model of posttraumatic growth among psychiatric nurses based on existing models and a literature review and verify its effectiveness.METHODS: Data were collected from psychiatric nurses in one special city, four metropolitan cities, and three regional cities from February to March 2016. Exogenous variables included hardiness and distress perception, while endogenous variables included self-disclosure, social support, deliberate rumination, and posttraumatic growth. Data from 489 psychiatric nurses were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 19.0 and AMOS 20.0.RESULTS: The modified model was a good fit for the data. Tests on significance of the pathways of the modified model showed that nine of the 14 paths were supported, and the explanatory power of posttraumatic growth by included variables in the model was 69.2%. For posttraumatic growth among psychiatric nurses, deliberate rumination had a direct effect as the variable that had the largest influence. Indirect effects were found in the order of hardiness, social support, and distress perception. Self-disclosure showed both direct and indirect effects.CONCLUSION: A strategy to improve deliberate rumination is necessary when seeking to improve posttraumatic growth among psychiatric nurses. Enhancing psychiatric nurses' hardiness before trauma would enable them to actively express negative emotions after trauma, allowing them to receive more social support. This would improve deliberate rumination and consequently help promote psychological growth among psychiatric nurses who have experienced trauma.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of nursing students' belongingness and self-esteem on self-directed learning in clinical practice. METHODS: The participants were 163 senior nursing students. Using a structured-questionnaire, data were collected from September to October 2016. Data were analyzed using independent t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression. RESULTS: Self-directed learning in clinical practice had statistically significant correlation with belongingness (r=.47, p<.001) and self-esteem (r=.52, p<.001). Factors affecting self-directed learning were self-esteem (β=.38, p<.001), belongingness (β=.30, p<.001), and more than 5 members of clinical practice (β=.15, p=.017). These three variables explained 35% of self-directed learning. CONCLUSION: In order to enhance self-directed learning in clinical practice of nursing students, nursing schools should provide training to increase self-esteem in nursing students. In addition, an appropriate number of students should be considered, so that they can have a well-developed sense of belonging to clinical practice.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the factors associated with the timeliness of electronic nursing documentation using the entry time on the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. METHODS: As a retrospective study, data were extracted from January 1 to February 28, 2014 from a hospital EMR system and a nurses’ personnel information system. The timeliness of instances of nursing documentation was categorized into ‘timely’ or ‘untimely’ according to whether the entry time was time-stamped within the working hours during each day, evening, or night shift. Factors associated with the timeliness of the electronic nursing documentation were included in the logistic regression models as nurse- and patient-associated factors. RESULTS: Among 1,700,247 instances of electronic nursing documentation, 79.3% (n = 1,347,711) were completed within the working hours. Years of nursing experience, nursing shift, days of the week, patients’ age, and medical department had a statistically significant associated with the timeliness of nursing records. Nurses with experience of more than 1 year entered nursing records over 2 times more during their working hours than did less experienced nurses. During the evening and night shifts, nurses were 1.49 times and 9.19 times more likely to enter nursing documents in a timely manner, respectively, as compared to those in the day shift. CONCLUSIONS: Nursing documentation was typically completed outside of working hours when a nurse had little experience, worked during the day shift or weekdays, and when tasks were unpredictable. This shows that new nurses need support to familiarize them with various tasks and the overall workflow.

PURPOSE: Purpose of this research was to identify effects of application of a modified primary nursing system. METHODS: Measurement was done of direct nursing time and satisfaction of nurses and patients before and after one month of the modified primary nursing system in a surgery unit in C university hospital, Seoul. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference between average for patient satisfaction (4.24) before and (4.11) after application of the modified primary nursing system. Total average for nurse satisfaction with the nursing delivery system was 2.89 before application and, 3.34 after, indicating some significant differences (t=-4.06, p<.001). The KPCS-1 was 10.19 before application of the modified primary nursing system and 9.52 after application. Recalculated into direct nursing time, the average direct nursing time for one patient was 92 minutes before application, and 85.98 minutes after, indicating no significant difference. CONCLUSION: Through this research an attempt was made to build and test a modified primary nursing system. Results indicate that the most important thing is to clearly regulate office work and safely implement the new system.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to analyze the impact of increasing the supply of newly licensed nurses on improving the hospital nurse staffing grades for the period of 2009~2014. METHODS: Using public administrative data, we analyzed the effect of newly licensed nurses on staffing in 1,594 hospitals using Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) ordered logistic regression, and of supply variation on improving staffing grades in 1,042 hospitals using GEE logistic regression. RESULTS: An increase of one newly licensed nurse per 100 beds in general units had significantly lower odds of improving staffing grades (grades 6~0 vs. 7) (odds ratio=0.95, p=.005). The supply of newly licensed nurses increased by 32% from 2009 to 2014, and proportion of hospitals whose staffing grade had improved, not changed, and worsened was 19.1%, 70.1%, and 10.8% respectively. Compared to 2009, the supply variation of newly licensed nurses in 2014 was not significantly related to the increased odds of improving staffing grades in the region (OR=1.02, p=.870). CONCLUSION: To achieve a balance in the regional supply and demand for hospital nurses, compliance with nurse staffing legislation and revisions in the nursing fee differentiation policy are needed. Rather than relying on increasing nurse supply, retention policies for new graduate nurses are required to build and sustain competent nurse workforce in the future.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the level of nursing professionalism and factors that affect nurse perceptions. METHOD: This study is a descriptive study involving 443 nursing students from two universities. Data were collected in September 2012 via a structured self-report questionnaire and subsequently analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. RESULTS: The mean scores for nurse image, core elements of nursing professionalism and nursing professionalism were 3.65+/-.46, 4.17+/-.39 and 3.59+/-.45, respectively. Nursing Professionalism had a significant positive correlation with nurse image (r=.749, p<.001) and core elements of nursing professionalism (r=.365, p<.001). In multiple linear regression, factors that influenced nursing professionalism were: temperament as nurses, professionalism, vision of career, role performance of nurses' image, and fundamental nursing practical experience. These variables explained about 58.8% of the total variance in nursing professionalism. CONCLUSION: For more positive nursing professionalism among students, more attention should be paid to enhancing the positive image of nurses. Doing so can serve as a fundamental resource for the development of appropriate strategies for nursing professionalism.

PURPOSE: In nursing research, studies using statistical methods are required and have increased. In this study, some statistical methods using in nursing study are summarized and appropriate usage is proposed. METHODS: Twenty-five original articles from the Journal of Korean Academy of Fundamentals Nursing were reviewed. Statistical methods used in the Journal of Fundamentals Nursing were classified and common errors were presented. RESULTS: Seventy-six statistical analysis were performed in the 25 studies. Among the articles, 28 cases contained errors. Most errors occurred in linear regression analysis and nonparametric analysis. CONCLUSION: When the use of statistical method is applied inappropriately, the result bring out a serious error. In order to ensure reliability and validity of study, researchers should recognize clear application and usage of statistical methods.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify the effect of metacognition, communication skills, and confidence in the performance of core basic nursing skills on clinical competency in nursing students.METHODS: A total of 158 students were recruited from two nursing colleges in B metropolitan city. Data were collected by means of self-reported questionnaires from December 3–31, 2018 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple linear regression with SPSS 21.0.RESULTS: Metacognition, communication skills, and confidence in the performance of core basic nursing skills were higher than normal and the relationship between the variables metacognition (r=.69, p=<.001), communication skills (r=.69, p=<.001), and confidence in the performance of core basic nursing skills (r=.59, p=<.001) were highly positively correlated with clinical performance. Factors influencing these three variables accounted for 64.4% of clinical competency.CONCLUSION: Further research on the development of the curriculum and intervention program, and the verification of the effect are needed.
